EVERTON FC: TV & RADIO

In the mid-nineties, technology arrived at Goodison Park in the form of the Club's radio and television stations

 RADIO EVERTON

Radio Everton was at 1602 kHz AM, Match Days only

For a while, local fans who couldn't get to home matches could at listen to all the pre-match build-up, live match commentary, player interviews and and some of the worst music known to man.  Reception was only any good within about 10 miles of Goodison Park, but now, you can't even pick it up anywhere.

Everton have pulled the plug on Radio Everton, and we can only wonder at the reasons.  Perhaps its demise is related to the growth of Everton's official presence on the Internet, with the ending of free radio transmissions merely a precursor of charges being levied for the Internet commentary service.

Starting with Charlton Athletic match in April 1999, the long-awaited audio stream of Radio Everton finally became available over the Internet, including live match commentary, initially through Virgin.net.  The following season, Planet Football took over the running of Everton's Official website, and progressively improved the live audio coverage on matchdays.  Now, the website provides live commentary of both home and away matches, with Darren Griffiths behind the microphone.

A new feature that made its debut at Goodison Park during the 1997-98 season was TV Everton, the club's own TV channel.  This is piped via closed-circuit to over 150 sets around the ground.  Starting at 12:30 pm on weekend match days, the screens then show that day's game live, with Premiership scores and highlights at half-time.  A post-match interview and highlights round off the day on TV Everton.

The 2000-01 season finally saw the advent of big-screen television screens as a permanent feature.  The first screen was set up in the corner between the Park end and Bullens Road stands.  A second screen is to be added in the autumn of 2000, located in the opposite corner of Goodison Park, in front of St Matthew's church.
