Sigurdsson helps Iceland to first World Cup Finals

9 Oct
Iceland have qualified for the 2018 World Cup Finals in Russia thanks to a 2-0 win over Kosovo but there was heartbreak for Wales and joy for Everton's duo Irish in Cardiff.

With Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy sidelined, Everton's playing representatives on the night, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ashley Williams, had contrasting fortunes.

Sigurdsson set Iceland on their way to their second successive major tournament finals when he scored their first goal. Burnley's Berg Gudmundsson added another in the second half to book passage to Russia as the smallest nation by population to ever do so.

Williams, however, was at fault for the goal that saw Ireland secure a chance of qualifying via the playoffs when he was dispossessed in a dangerous area and James McLean scored the winner.

Wales needed at least a draw to finish in the playoff spot but it's Coleman's and McCarthy's hopes of playing in the World Cup that live on.
