COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From my seat: Wigan (h)

By Ken Buckley :  11/08/2007 :  Comments (10) :
At last it's here: the first day of the season and we are at home. We make our way to our usual meeting place and are given a cordial North Liverpool welcome on our arrival from our friendly landlady. "Yous fuckers back again", quickly followed by "Yerl win fuck all this year" from enthusiastic number two barmaid. As you may have worked out, the female element of our watering hole are Reds but balance is provided by the landlord who is a Blue. With two Boddies costing just over 3 quid I stick it.

We meet up with all our mates from following Blues over many many years and exchange stories of our summer activities, hell one guy has been married (to a Red!!). Stadium moves seem to be on the back burner as we talk mostly of what moves in the transfer market will best suit our course and who the hell is putting this money up ? see, everyone believes the Mirror!

Then it's off to the ground and the first hurdle is the Pelican Crossing opposite Weatherspoons being out of order; que Blues spilling over the road to the sound of screetching tyres and the odd riposte. No ground campaigners encountered, For or Against, save a plane trailing a banner from KEIOC and another hung from the Winslow asking us to Say No to Kirkby.

We were more intent on what line-up we had today and on hearing it from our earstwhile announcer it became apparent that the the manager had decided to go with the tried and trusted. We started brightly and played a bit of joined-up footy but sadly this was not to last.

Wigan, with a host of new names, played as though they had just been introduced and you could see they were there for the taking but we just didn't seem to have the necessary guile to break them down until a Hibbert cross by-passed its target and Ossie looped a header over a startled keeper. I thought "Hhere we go; we can walk this now" and indeed within a few mins Arteta was upended in the box right in front of the ref, Mr Clattengberg, who I thought had a very good game but chose to ignore the appeal, I must watch out for that on Tele.

The first half then sort of fizzled out but we were glad of 1-0 at the break. The half-time chat ended in agreement that we need some quality additions to the midfield as playing two holding midfielders namely Neville and Carsley we were never going to unlock defences of Wigan's calibre ? never mind those of a more quality nature.

The second half could best be described as scrappy and to be honest a bit boring but it gave me the chance to have a good look at one of our supposed targets: Jason Koumas. All I can say is I am glad we didn't splash the cash.

We had to wait until the hour mark for some real excitement when an Arteta free-kick was fumbled and Ossie had a goal bound effort blocked. Shortly after, Ossie was replaced by new man Pienaar who was given a great reception but you could see it was his first game and uncertainty ruled although in glimpses I got the impression when he settles he will be a good addition. It was his pass that put AJ in and he did a marvelousjob of twisting and turning men before sliding a cross that Big Vic just could not miss.

2-0; game over, I thought... but I had reckoned without the usual Blues propensity to take the foot off the gas, get complacent and allow Scharner room he shouldn't have to cross a derelict box for Sibierski to slot home. From my seat, Moyes was less than happy. Had they learned their lesson? Not sure as Howerd went full length to push away a shot from Scharner for a corner which came to nothing. In the last minute, AJ got a chance to put a respectable look to the scoreline but it came to nought.

Still, at the final whistle, most were happy with three points and for a first game of the season I think that was job done. Much to build on as we seek a great season but I think it will take a bit of quality transfer dealings to ensure that.

Back to our lovable local hostelry and I take delight in conveying the score to the red dollies. Spurs next and we will need improvement to match last season's result. But, hey ? who knows? UP THE BLUES

Ken, thought you were a little harsh on your opinion of Koumas.

I thought he was the pick of the midfielders (Arteta apart) on the field. He was comfortable on the ball and could pass fifty yards when he wanted to.

Indeed, he made more passes to players of his own side than our two ’midfield maestros’ Neville and Carsley made all game.

On another note, if we move to Kirkby, I think you may have to say goodbye to your two pints for £3.00 scenario!!

Another reason for KEIOC to beat us over the head with?

its going to be a long hard season if the wigan game was anything to go by. playing two central midfielders who dont have a creative pass between them might get us some points away from home in a 4-5-1 system with cahill being the main threat. neither carsley or neville actually want to have the ball at their feet. compare them with valencia for wigan who always managed to find space and always wanted the ball. thankfully, wigan dont have a striker to their name or we would have really struggled.

Great account, Ken. As a far-removed supporter, it’s awesome for me that some of you folks who are able to go to the game share your thoughts and observations with us. It matters a great deal to those of us who long to make it to GP evry other week, but can’t!

As it is for me, I listen in on Radio City. A special clap on the back to all you who made the match; your ovation as the clubs marched out was superb. I love the fact that when our support is on their game they can distort the sound coming out of my laptop’s tinny speakers. You all do us proud :)

Take it easy, everyone. COYBiB.

A bit of an anti-climax for me, we got the result but the performance was very average aside from Arteta. Tony Hibbert looked uncomfortable on the ball, unwilling to push forward or overlap Arteta, Moyes would be doing us a massive favour if he pushed Neville to right back. Big Vic also looked a little nervous upfront and won very little in the air, this game for me as with many last season highlighted that we need reinforcements in midfield and a more experienced forward to lead the line.

Well said Peter, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve never liked Hibbert, and I have always thought (probraby since the early 90’s) that we need a better forward line. I just don’t think that AJ is up to it. Vaughan maybe (if he’s ever fit)AJ has pace, but’s that’s all- Cadamatari had pace!

Joe your kidding aren’t you. AJ is pure class and will score goals for fun this season. Without him we would really struggle, how you can even compare him to Cadamatari is beyond me. Are you sure your a blue? Thats said we do need another forward with Vaughan out injured. I think Yakubu would be a good but dear signing, when hes on song he is class, but he does have a habbit of looking disinterested sometimes.
Up the blues !!!!!!!!!!!

I think you’re being a bit harsh on AJ, Joe! Sure, if he was a few inches taller and a couple of stone heavier he’d be more imposing, but he ain’t. And the reality is that he needs better supply from the midfield; this is something that comes up in these debates time and time again.

We need more creative midfielders and I think Pienaar will be good once he settles - he wasn’t considered to be one Ajax’s most promising players for nothing.
If AJ gets supply that doesn’t constantly force him wide of goal (as we saw so much last season) - in other words if he gets onto the end of more defence spltting passes - he’ll easily get into double figures. And he’s of a matchwinning calibre - remember Arsenal last year?? Any other season that match would have ended 0-0.

Yakubu would be a fantastic partner for him up front. He has settled in the Premiership, is strong and quick, and Johnson could have a field day playing off him - but we do still need some more quality midfielders. If we got Fernandes and Vogel we’d be laughing, and Brunt could be a handy buy too.

I thought Vic did well today. Both Bramble and Granquist are bigger than him so he was not going to win every header. He won he fair share and his touch is improving dramatically. Did you see a few times where he took the ball down on his chest it was almost Drogba like. Bramble is quite a physical and powerful defender and Victor was to powerful for him. As people have said Johnson is not all he is made out to be but his pace is vital. I havent seen many quicker players than him over 5 yards. We need someone like Yakubu who will poach in the box because Johnson work outside the box is second to none. Mikel Arteta was quality again. His dribbling is brilliant despite not being a flyer. We really need a centre midfielder and fast. I dont know why Moyes seems to think Neville’s first choice position is centre midfield when he actually played fullback for most of his career. He is our best right back. Pienaar will be a quality signing. I have seen a lot of him in the past and he is a brilliant little player. The thing I like about him also is that he is quick and that is something we do not have in midfield. GET MANNY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this right? No stadium issues? Whats going on? Have we moved? Where is all the kirkby arguments? Has hell frozen over? Have they found Shergar? I think I need to lie down in a dark room with a couple of stiff brandies. ANYWAY - I was unfortunate enough not to be present at the Wigan Game. Living in Chemlsford I dont get the opportunity to see may games at home, usually when we play in london or the home counties. On the evidence of the (albeit brief) highlights on MATCH of the day (why are we alwatys shown last ) I cant really see anything to get excited about. But a wins a win. And 3 points on the opening day is always welcome. I never thought two scorers would be Leon and Victor. The wigan goal ten minutes from the end was quite frankly laughable. Where the hell was the defence. With Tottingham Hotspurs coming midweek we will have to tighten up but a repeat of last years result looks improbable. The best we can hope for is fighting for a uefa cup place. The top four sadly looks to be a bridge to far. But the first 11 we have are the best sqaud we have assembled for many a year. I hope this year we can hopefully do something. Even a league cup would be welcome. But I am fairly optimistic that the term something can be achieved. Lets look at the facts. Howard instead of Myhre. Arteta instead of Thomsen. Lescott instead of Hottiger. Johnson in place of Madar. Vaughan (when fit) for Barmby anyone? The list is endless. i just hope Mr Moyes can get someone in before the tranfser deadline closes. Lets keep adding to our inexpensive but stable team with some astute common sense captures. But we need to pace ourselves. After all the season is a marathon not a sprint. lets hope the school of science can prove me at least wrong and put some much needed silverware in our cabinet. At least we have the right man as manager even if the board and other such higher authority leave a lot to be Desired.
