COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY
From my seat: Wigan (a)
To see us lead 2-0 at the break was remarkable as Wigan had started at a high tempo and pegged us back to such an extent that 'One up front' was a reality. It took to the quarter-hour mark for us to have our first shot, which passed over the bar from Carsley. Wigan, for all their pressing, could not find a telling pass against a determined and resolute defence.
There was no doubt that Wigan were the better side to date and first Bent had a free header excellently tipped onto the bar and scrambled away, then Valencia had a goalbound effort thwarted by Cahill throwing his body in the way.
Bruce must have wondered when, not if, a goal would come and he must have been devastated when on the 40-minute mark it came to the Blues. Cahill and Arteta between them won the ball in midfield and the Spaniard played the channel ball for the 'One up front'. Bramble got there first and in attempting a routine pass to his keeper made a complete hash by under hitting it. AJ didn't need any encouragement and ran on toward the keeper and at the right moment fired past him into the net. Wild cheers and celebration but you could not help but think that was against the run of play.
More was to come when a corner from Arteta caused an almighty melee at the near post and with the ball ricocheting Lescott quietly pulled away to the back post in top striker mode and surely enough the ball squirmed through to that area and he smashed home from four yards.
Half-time: outplayed and two up... you didn't know what to make of it!
The start of the second half saw us the more likely and about ten minutes in Wigan made a double change as they were awarded a free kick. Koumas was one of the subs and he took the kick; it looked routine for Howard to clear out but he seemed to hesitate and ended up flapping at it and missing the ball the next thing you knew it was in the back of our net (Jags own-goal) but really it should have been dealt with by the keeper and for the second time in three games he has dithered in making the decision to come or stay.
We didn't look so composed now and Wigan had a 10-minute spell that had us right on the back-foot and finding it difficult to get out. We then got a bit more of a grip in midfield and it became a more end-to-end contest and Osman should have done better by his standard with a curler that went just wide with the keeper beaten.
Wigan pressed hard to gain an equalizer and pushed us back again so with 20 minutes to go the manager swopped Neville for Vaughan and went 4-4-2 which certainly occupied their defence more and with their eager running of the channels took some pressure off and we didn't have a further scare until the dying moments when Bent skied when in a good possition.
I could not offer a Man of the Match in this game as on such a pitch all semblence of pretty football and silky pass-and-move had to replaced with grit, determination and sheer effort and every player played his part in putting in workman-like shifts.
Overall I thought the manager picked the right team and tactics to suit even though we didn't get the glimpse of Manny that we had hoped for.
I think most Blues will take today's three points and not worry to much over the niceties of the beautiful game. Having played in such conditions I hope good and speedy recoveries are made so that we may have a cracking night on Wednesday. UP THE BLUES

One comment they typed was "the only thing that coould be heard was the away support of the EFC fans".
Then when I had a chance to review the video, when ozzie almost volleyed in, you could see our supporters rise as one when they thought it was a goal.
A great result but I think a special mention goes to our supporters who went to the game and did us proud.
Well done Lads.
He was going for the ball but suddenly there were so many bodies in the way.
So he hit some of the bodies and missed the ball.
He was going for the ball.
It was a great, clinical finish by Johnson for our first goal. As a non-football player (Australian Rules is the only code I’ve played), can someone enlighten me if strikers are trained to shoot through the ’keeper’s legs? You tend to see it happen a lot. Johnson did it to perfection.
Here’s hoping the boys win 2-0 against Chelsea - looking forward to Manny’s return hopefully as well.
In games played in such muddy conditions whether it is a Premier League game or a Sunday League game not many teams win pretty. It is a game were you have to knuckle down and grind out the win.
I thought Hibbert again did a solid job defensively, again we have the detractors moaning he cant pass he cant overlap, but as an out and out defender he is better than Neville in that position, Neville who cant pass as a midfielder is more comfortable going forward probably as at Utd they attack more than they defend.
I would like to see Baines back in the team when he is fit for Valente as to me he gives us nothing he cant defend or attack.
My concern is also that it seems in every game we make a calamitous mistake and get punished for it, this happened against Wigan and against Chelsea, in Tim Howard we have a decent shot stopper but on crosses he is becoming more like Dracula these days. I would hope the Everton goalie coach can work on this part of his game.
If he plays the same side with the same formation on Wednesday I don’t think we’ll get to the final.
His best footballers must start grafters won’t be enough.
Osman looked very good after being out for so long but he needed to track back more like the rest of the midfielders. I think he’ll start on Wed.
A couple of points though :
I thought that Neville was useless, I heard that he was steady in some match reports but he did nothing. He cant pass or tackle. When we punted the ball forward at times and Wigan headed the ball back into midfield too many times they picked up the ball and came right back at us. Ok, Carsley played deep but with Cahill attacking Neville was caught in no mans land. He cant read the game as a midfielder shoud i.e. Carsley. I think Moyes is finally realising this, by taking him off instead of dropping him to Hibberts position.
And another striker’s goal from Joleon. Already a class act and getting better. And attracting a great deal of attention. We will have to fight off some big bids for him in thre not too distant.
And someone, Kevin Gallagher I think, in the Radio 5 build up to the game on Sunday called Everton a "physical" side. News to me, but if we can be when we have to, all well and good.
You're right, it's not the done thing.
However, there was a woman just behind me who talked all the way through the game (and I mean two lots of 45 minutes of non-stop yacking) at the top of her voice. We were treated to her insights into sunbeds, her medical condition, the weather, Gordon Brown, her daughters’ boyfriend, Christmas, summer holidays - and Wigan’s back 4. There may have been more but I was trying to focus on the game, not her.
I swear she did not pause for breath in either half. I just pity the poor sod sat next to her because his ears must have been bleeding at the end. Why she was at the game I have no idea because it was clear that she was paying scant attention to the events on the pitch. So both sets of fans may have been louder than I give them credit for - it’s hard to tell when your hat is pulled down over your ears!
