Heitinga the anti-hero

11/07/2010
Johnny Heitinga's quest for World Cup glory came to an ignominious end when he became only the fifth player to be sent off in a World Cup Final after picking up a second yellow card 10 minutes from the end of extra time. Referee Howard Webb had to start flashing yellow cards, many of them deserved, early in a mostly dreadful World Cup Final and it was sadly predictable that someone would walk before the end which Heitinga did, somewhat harshly, for leaning on Andres Iniesta after an otherwise excellent performance at the back for the Dutch. A number of golden chances went begging for both sides until Iniesta finally broke the stalemate in Spain's favour with four minutes left. The card count: Holland 9 - 5 Spain.
