To all Moyes's critics

By Ben   Jones  ::  05/03/2012   330 Comments (»Last) I have been watching the mailbag threads and peoples opinions on this site for a long time now. A lot, and I mean a lot of criticism of David Moyes has embarked from I would say a majority on this site. That does surprise me a great deal, because he has worked wonders with our club.

So do I need to repeat his acheivements to all the critics? 3 LMA league manager of the year awards when Alex Ferguson has only won 2, various top 10 finishes, various European League finishes, 1 Champions League finish, 1 Cup final, maybe another this season.

If you look at his transfer policy, actually, I only need to describe how good that is with names: Lescott, Arteta, Pienaar, Jagielka, Baines, Martyn, Yobo, Howard. All of those have had fantastic careers with Everton, and all have were purchased at £5 million or less. Some made us a handy profit, some are still playing well for us now. I know there have been some bad ones: Krøldrup, Beattie and Van der Meyde, but all managers make bad signings: Ferguson bought Taibi, Djemba Djemba for example, Wenger bought Reyes for a ridiculous amount. All I'm saying is transfers are calculated gambles, and Moyes's success with transfers is up there with the best.

The style of football has been heavily criticized. Yeah, he's not a Wenger with his style of football, but has our football been as bad as a lot of people says? Negative, hoofball and all of that? Has it really? We have played some wonderful football of times, anyone who saw the first 20 minutes of the QPR game saw us play some fantastic football. I'm not saying our football is great all the time, but it certainly is not as bad as everyone says. It's not Allardyce standard!!

Then the worst thing is a lot of people say Moyes should be sacked. Believe me, if Moyes is sacked, we would be down there in the depths of the league, we might even be relegated.

And then, people say "Moyes should get sacked" or whatever, but they NEVER say a replacement. It is ridiculous how people can lay such a claim that Moyes should be sacked, and then cannot think of a better manager than him who we can realistically get instead.

If you want candidates, are there any top foreign coaches who can take over? I have no idea, I doubt it very much though. If we look at british managers, who? I mean I would have taken Hughes and O'Neill (who are certainly on par with Moyes) but they have gone. What about some managers who were known for their positive philosophy before in the league, eg, Coyle, Holloway, Martinez etc (who a lot of people were calling for to replace Moyes this time last year by the way) have seen their clubs go way down the hill.

Then there's two good candidates who might do the job, but are huge gambles: Rodgers and Lambert. They're playing good football with their clubs and are doing well in the league. But who says next season they don't do an Ipswich or Reading, and they get relegated? They could join the group with Martinez and Co who are good for one or two seasons, but not good for seven or eight out of the ten seasons, like Mr Moyes.

I'm not saying Moyes is perfect. He does a lot of things which frustrate me. Playing Cahill and Neville constantly, being a bit too negative at times. But doesn't every manager annoy every club? Don't they have flaws which in sites like ToffeeWeb to other clubs, fans complain about, like us? Of course they do! No manager is perfect.

So my point is I do not want to be in a situation when Moyes leaves, and we get Steve Bruce or Mick McCarthy in charge. Moyes is the best we can get at the moment, and he must stay to ensure this club consistently stays up there until we get investment. I would hate it if he left for Spurs and Chelsea in the summer.

I would also like to ask the critics not to sidestep the question: who in this moment in time is good enough to replace Moyes?
