Players linked to & missed out on

 30 Comments: First  |  Last

I was just watching Sky Sports News and couldn't help but notice the amount of players that Everton have been linked with and missed out on. Some of them even free!

  • Daniel Sturridge ? Chelsea
  • Shane Long ? West Brom
  • DJ Campbell ? QPR
  • Chris Eagles ? Bolton
  • Charles N'Zogbia ? Aston Villa
  • Nigel Reo-Coker ? Bolton
  • Andy Lonergan ? Leeds
  • Jay Bothroyd ? QPR
  • Keiren Westwood ? Sunderland
  • David Vaughan ? Sunderland
  • Charlie Adam ? Liverpool
  • Wes Brown ? Sunderland
I know there is a lack of or no money at the club but surely we could attract some of the freebies? Have we totally lost our appeal to attract players? It's getting a bit disgraceful when players are going to the lesser teams even when we have been in the mix for European football for the last 3-4 years... A little depressing seeing them go to Sunderland, West Brom or QPR!

Is it any wonder we are being tipped to go down because of the lack of activity in the transfer market. 17 days left of this Transfer Window and I fear that we will lose big players rather than bring in any.

Tipped to go down, who's said that?. Or is it you?

I know we are all frustrated but get a grip, the only players on your list with any credibility are Sturridge & N'gobia

Couldn't shift the Yak/Yobo to pursue N'gobia & Sturridge was always a long shot on loan.

The rest are mainly paper talk and not worth having anyway.

Missing Barton, Kranjcar & Vicente! All possibilities.

Larsson would have been nice. Sturridge and nzogbia - you have a point. The rest, who cares?

A couple questions about that. Who's tipping us to go down exactly. I can see mid table, but relegation over QPR, Norwich, Blackburn, etc? Really. And you sort of insinuate that all those players listed are freebies when hardly any of them were. Actually, I think only one of the players you mentioned was a free, and we haven't missed on Sturridge as he is a player who is supposedly wanted on loan again. Not really sure what the point of your piece is. Yeah, we haven't bought anyone and others have. Not exactly new is it?

I was actually hoping we would cash in on a player or two to freshen up the squad but I don't think anyone is leaving. All I can hope for is that the players are motivated, Fellaini and others will be playing for an improved contract or to look attractive to top sides, and we'll get off to a solid start. The nice thing about being able to watch the opening day of the season with Everton's match cancelled was seeing that football is played on the pitch and not on paper. Sides like Liverpool can sign all the players they want and open up their first match at home and be held to a draw and look quite toothless. It's a long season and there will be many twists and turns along the way.

Add Larsson to the list mate, and what a goal that was today against the shite. His wages were surely nowhere near the Barton ceiling, and we needed him so much more. There was a rumour of a link early on pre-season, just a rumour. But at this point when the only cost was, I suspect, £30,000 or so in wages, well that puts the financial situation and the board's lack of acumen in real chilling perspective.

God (Sheedy) help us all. It's midnight in Chicago right now, drinking a nice red, and watching Shane Long from a last season game, dazzling pace, controls a ball on a sixpence, holds the ball up well, scores goals (a fair few from penalties, mind you).

What have we become?

By lazy journo's who put two and two together and...well we know the rest.

I was speaking to Roberto Martinez after the Villarreal game about N'Zogbia. He said Everton where never in for him, no contact at all.

At half-time on Sky Sports News, it said Wigan had been allowed to talk to Wright-Phillips, we where chatting to him about that and he said he's not interested in leaving Man City because of Champions League and I suggested Adam Johnson only as a joke but he replied "No he will go to you, Everton" he looked serious but then again could've just been saying it because he feels sorry for us.

Personally, I don't think we will sign anyone.

When will posters realise that these guys are in this for the money. Loyalty - the last vestiges of that at went out the window when the Premier League.

So a choice of a free to Blackburn on £70,000 a week or to Everton on £40,000 a week. No brainer. But Mr. Mercinary Superstar, Blackburn could be relegated? Well if they are not, I could be the hero that kept them up and I collect £70,000 a week next year or even more for being the hero, or if they are relegated, I just find myself another club who will pay me the £70,000.

That is why they chose no mark clubs over us - plus a manager who usually only buys players better than the ones we have, not just to deplete the club of cash on a weekly basis by only being good enough to warm the bench.

Firstly, as others have said, who's tipping us to go down? Most pundits predictions I've read have us around 7th - where we finished last year. I think that's slightly over-optimistic given the relative strengthening of teams we finished above, but nowhere have I read/heard anyone tipping us to go down.

Secondly, again as raised by others - you've missed out a number of free transfers - Ba, Upson, Woodgate, Hargreaves etc. If you accept we have no money, why even include players like N'Zogbia?

Finally, when will posters realise that free transfers aren't free? These days clubs need to account for the whole-contract costs, so as well as the hefty signing on fee that these guys will demand in lieu of a transfer fee, you've got a 3-4 contract liability to consider.

Other than that, top post.

Steve Brenner from the Sun is one expert that I can confirm has predicted we'll go down. Others I can't remember were insinuiating that with the lack of transfer activity we could be a possibility to go down.

Yes I am sure there are others I have not put down purely because they haven't moved clubs or refused to let them go.

The frustration is that, in the case of Lonergan; he was actually training at the club & we couldn't even find I think £150k to keep him. Yes he may not be world class but our squad is too small & getting older not to sign backup freebies or cheaper players.

I don't think we will go down but if it was to happen I think we can kiss top flight & European football goodbye forever

Peter you've answered your own question. No money equals no players. Irrelevant of how attractive a club you are. Unless of course players would be willing to play for us for nothing.

Why do people think that having no money somehow doesn't include wages/signing on fees for a player? We apparently had £80 mil come in last year, and £80 mil go out, leaving nothing. Now if we get any of these 'free' players, and pay them 20k a week lets say, then suddenly that £80 mil in becomes £81 mil out, resulting in even more debt. There is no such thing as a free player!

Also, bollocks about us going down. I'm not saying it would be impossible, but we also have the potential of being even stronger if we have a little more luck on the injury front. Imagine getting 20 consecutive games with Felli, Arteta & Cahill all in the same team, maybe even add Saha to that? Imagine Barkley or Gueye taking the league by storm? The squad has not turned from 7th place to relegation in 3 months!

@ John (9) very good. What makes these guys any more of an expert than you or I? And who reads the Sun for crissakes! I despair that someone posts based on comments from some no-mark at that rag!

Now if Martinez would like to bring Adam Johnson with him, that would be newsworthy!

Who the Hell is Steve Brenner????

Until we get any fucking kind of investment in, we wont buy Joe Fuck!

If we get the laughable £2M for Yobo, it may fund a loan or two and I'd take that.

Saddest thing is we are 2/3 players away from being a really top team... Biggest chance lost I can think of.

Surely to 'miss out' on somebody you need to actually be interested in them? Have Everton actually been interested in any of these players? How many of them would have been an improvement on what we already have?

N'Zogbia... well yes he's gone to Villa but to be fair they've sold two wide players who are better than him.

Sturridge ? you say he's gone to Chelsea??? He was already there lad! That means he's gone nowhere!!!

Its not as simple as that... you get someone on the free but you still have to pay them wages.

Base on the last few years, one has to realize that the club is balancing the books.

There is no Europe, so there are no additional revenue and the only other sources of revenue will be from a domestic cup run, increase matchday tickets, sell more merchandise or advertisement.

I can't see anyone wants to advertise at Goodison... you won't be buying more than you should... hell will break loose once Bill starts charging 10 quid more for matches... which means we need Dave to give it a good go on the cup so at least there will be Europa next season.

To be honest a lot of these players would have been a gamble (especially lower league ones), so I'm not too bothered about Long, Bothroyd, Lonergan, etc and we were never in for Adam seriously

The big misses for me:
> Larsson - ex-Gunner showed his class with delivery from flanks and goal agains the shite
> David Vaughan - A real unsung hero last year, created loads whilst Adam got all the plaudits - would have been a perfect Moyes player.
> N-Zogbia - Seemed to tick all the boxes we're lacking (creativity and cutting edge on the wing)
> Eagles - admittedly wasn't bothered before, but has started well.

There's still opportunities out there though, as City especially need to loan out or let go with arrival of Nasri (and also potential non-departure of Tevez). I'd happily welcome in Sturridge, Johnson or Bellamy and maybe even SWP. Likewise there'll be a few more bargains coming onto the market as window closes - Krancjar and Wellbeck could yet be made available....plus if we do sell Jags or Rodders or even manage to get shot of Yak and Yobo, there's always a cheeky punt for Donovan! ;-) < br />

QPR, Norwich, Swansea, Wigan, Blackburn and Newcastle will all be in a relegation scrap and will DEFINITELY finish below us. Another 7th place finish.

Jefferson, BK borrowed against this season's Sky money last year.

Larsson looks like one we missed out on, a great shot and even if he gets about 5 or 6 goals this season that'll be more than Anichebe gets.

Last season, I said I would be happy to keep what we have and I thought we had a chance of top 4 with that. That didn't work out but our post Christmas form was top 4 or thereabouts.

We have lost Pienaar who was an attacking force on the left, albeit one that didn't score or weigh in with many assists; otherwise we're the same as last year.

Of course I would love to strengthen the squad but not with most of the aforementioned players, Sturridge, Johnson apart. But, as many posters have mentioned, players and especially agents go for the money.

What I can't get my head around is when players don't think about their careers first. For example, Naughton, who I thought we'd got, went to Spurs instead... where is he now? Norwich on his 3rd loan spell. If he'd come to us, he'd be either playing regular Premier League football at least, if not in the England squad. Dickhead.

Or are we the dickheads, for not doing everything we can to convince players to come here? eg, Sturridge:

"Listen, lad, we're the best team outside of the top 4 that Chelsea will let you come to; we won't pay you megabucks but you'll do alright moneywise, what we can offer is regular 1st team football and you can be a part of a team that can can take the Prem by storm ? all we need is you and we'll be in Europe next season and you, my lad, will be in the England team and wanted by ALL the so-called big clubs. Or you can go to Bolton again and be in exactly the same place next year as you are now." Repeat with Adam Johnson.

Let's face it, modern footballers have it made moneywise... so why do so many fuck up their careers for that extra dosh in the short-term?

N'Zogbia...???

Did anybody watch Fulham and Villa yesterday?

I did...

Well, I tried to. I gave up after half-an-hour, it was such a pile of absolute crap.

And as for N'Zogbia... if that had been his debut for Everton, the howls would still be reverberating. He was hopeless.

Iain we didnt get the two Kyle's as Everton offered the payment on the drip, probably a curly fucking wurly up front as the deposit, melted wax face steamed in with a blank cheque, bought two players from Shef Utd who were desperate for cash not promises. If the tables were turned and we'd nipped in to remove a competitor's chance to strengthen their squad I'd say clever move.

Now I was really disapointed when Shane Long signed for West Brom. He is a really talented player and he is the perfect signing for Everton. I think we need a striker who can really threaten other teams. Didn't anyone watch the match between Everton and Reading? He was amazing. Now I thought we should have bought him.

I agree Gavin , but my point is look at where Naughton is now and where he could have been, and it is down to our management to have pointed that out and convinced him. If he wanted he could have told Sheff i'm going Everton full stop, bit like Yobo.
