Can't beat Liverpool

 72 Comments: First  |  Last

If we can't beat what surely must be the worst Liverpool team of the last 20 years then really we're never going to beat these guys in any meaningful match under Moyes.

I love what DM has done for the club in terms of stability and bringing on the team, but we really have to question now if he has the required mentality to be a winner. That game was totally ours to win today, after half-time we should have come out all guns blazing and attempted to put their keeper under as much pressure as possible (he flapped at virtually every cross delivered), yet we only got in like 4 in the entire match!

Instead, we seemed to revert to defence-first and then, when they got an equaliser, through an absolutely terrible error by the much backed (on this site) Distin, we had no Plan B at all from an attacking sense (which is what is required to score goals). They brought on Bellamy (who I believe is their best forward by a fucking mile) who changed up the game for them and got a shit back-header off the troublesome but previously poor Carroll on the 87th minute. I almost left the pub at that point as I knew we wouldn't be able to respond.

I don't blame Moyes for everything, I think the referee made a number of terrible calls (why the second half-fuck up in the Liverpool defence resulted in a free kick I'm not clear, why were Coleman and Jelavic yellow carded for nothing, yet that animal Suarez (and I don't use that language lightly, this guy should be on a fucking leash) got away with a full on rugby tackle and constant niggling fouls I don't understand.
Also a number of blues let themselves down today (although not Felliani, Neville or Gibson who all fought for the cause). Baines was average (although there were 2-3 players on the opposition flank effectively neutralising him). I really don't understand what Cahill is doing on the pitch anymore apart from making space for Jelavic potentially. Osman was below par (as he often is in the bigger games, let's be fair) and Gueye worked his socks off without achieving too much.

Ultimately though, Moyes had the chance to set us up to win in the second half and for me that meant scoring at least one more goal and pushing them back rather than sitting back and defending. It appears he learnt nothing from the Chelsea final where we were progressively overrun by playing containment football (albeit by a far better team) and I have to blame him for this defeat. If he thought Coleman was a different option he should have started the second half (not that he did much of any consequence); Drenthe should have been on the bench (WTF happened there, really?) and for my money he should have put on Stracq ahead of Cahill as soon as the equaliser went in. At least then we'd have an outlet for the long balls and someone else to keep Liverpool defenders busy.

As it is, we're out and I'm angrier than I can ever recall being as an Everton fan and my hatred for Liverpool has reached another level, they just don't deserve it. I will be cheering wholeheartedly for whichever London club makes the final and hoping that now Kenwright will finally throw in the fucking towel and realise that we need a change if this club is to push on and achieve anything.

We as a club are now at it's lowest, their manager is under pressure, they are gonna win 2 cups this year (they will), finish above us in the leage (they will), while we wait for the first trophy of our manager in what is now over 10 years.

To make matters worse the stats for this season are Moyes 0 Dalgliesh 3. When was the last time we lost to them 3 times in the same season? If Moyes is handed another contract, that just about sums up our ambitions. He ain't going to Spurs et al.

Thousands of Evertonians have paid hundreds for this trip, to be let down again. Gav Ram was right, go 1 up then sit back and lose.

MOYES OUT!

Moyes is simply not a man who prepares a team for the big occasion. Fuck it. I didn't get myself worked up over the week because this was going to happen. Had to watch it surrounded by replica top wearing numpties in a Walkabout of all places.

Half time came and Moyes... fuck knows, Dalglish regrouped and galvanized his players. Coming out of the shit to smell like roses again.

Will we finish above them? Probably not. We're a team of lost opportunities who have good enough league placings. Fuck fuck fuck... total gay second half.

I love the club but just get the feeling we cant handle the pressure when it matters.

When we are "underdogs" and not expected to do anything we turn it on but too many times struggle in the games where we have a great chance to win.

I for one was not that confident ahead of today because of our failings in the big matches and am not at all surprised we lost, despite being in front!

It saddens me lots because we have got a side to compete and beat the best in England ? we just only seem to do it when there is nothing riding on the match.

We can beat Liverpool and we have, we just need the right tactics and attitude. We had this in the first half and just needed a second goal. Can't believe we weren't prepared for the obvious reaction we would get from the RS in the second half. Foot on the ball and pass, but no... panic and reversion to hoof ball. This is down to the manager.

By the way, Suarez shouldn't have been on the pitch to score given his rugby tackle on Heitinga. Coleman should have been off too but by then we should have been playing against ten men.

Season over. Nothing left to play for as 6th is out of reach. No European trips next season.

This game was supposed to be the making of David Moyes. Tactically inept and no plan B.

At 1-1 where was the fight, where was the bold substitutions? The man is a loser and I take my hat off to Dalglish for getting his out-of-sorts team up for it.

As for Moyes, 10 years is long enough and we need change.

As a 32-year-old fan, I do not really remember 1987, my first match at Goodison was 1988 v Portsmouth (2-1 win, Inchy and Trevor Steven). This puts me at 1 trophy in my 24-year memory as an Evertonian.

Today I feel lower than I have ever felt after a defeat, even like giving up on passionate support for the Blues and just backing off from football and Everton in general. I know the feeling will pass with time but this is exceptionally hard to take.

Players were poor today and lethargic in patches. But that match was lost by Moyes again today. Players are not going to put their hands up like Cahill, Osman and Gueye and say I am not in this game, take me off. Moyes put Fellaini up front and leaves Cahill in midfield? Jelavic was our only decent forward player to day and was left completely alone most of the match. We had no pace or outball when then game was crying out for Roy. Moyes has a complex with Liverpool, always will. Even reds admit it their worst squad in years and they have beaten us 3 times this season. Salven Billic hopefully with be here next season after the Euros, Moyes thank you but we have had enough.

Big big mental problems at beating them, and it can only be put at the door of the manager! He needs to get some Psychologist in or something, and not for the players but for himself!

One-nil up... have to kill the game but we bottled it! Why oh why did Coleman foul Gerrard who was running away from goal! Gutted is not the word!

Get Barkley in the team, give Baxter a go and get Vellios back in for the remainder and see if we can build on this good second half of the season! All is not lost but my god it feels like it!

If I, and most on this forum, can guess the exact line-up, the time and player substitutions, and the tactics at different points of the game, then we will just go on losing games like this forever and ever. Unless there is a change.

Guess what? That's not coming either. Not soon, anyway.

We just have to ask questions why we folded so badly in the second half...

They started better (probably because they have more players who are used to big games than us) but we got on top and once we scored should have won.

Why did we give them the initiative? Why did we sit so deep? Where did the impetus go?

It's not because of the players. We have a good team who are on form and should play with confidence. So why did it all go so wrong at half time?

I'll leave it to all to draw their own conclusions...

What's the answer - I don't know.. but if we want to win anything (not just survive!) something has to change.

This team needs fresh input and a clearout of crappy players.
I could understand why we did shit first half of the season, but not know.

Drenthe is a absolute must to sign.
We have all to win in signing him.
Plus he does not cost transfer fees.

It was obvious today that we needed Drenthe.
Also for a manager Moyes has no clue whatsoever, leave out your most creative player this season.in a semi final.

Even Walter Smith would have known better.

3 losses against Liverpool in one season.
That to me is a reason to get sacked.
Kenwright needs to face it, we are heading nowhere with Moyes.

Brian, I know exactly what you mean, it's the cheap alternative. We need more than that. I have nothing against Phil Neville at all as I think he cares for the club but we need quality, quality management, quality coaching which we desperately need for the youngsters before they lose heart. We are not far off from being a force in the future and that's mainly down to Moyes steadying the ship but enough is enough.

My bona fides ? I'm 56 years of age and I've seen Everton play under some of the best and worst managers around: after today's Wembley performance, where does Davey Moyes fall?

This is the worst Liverpool side for years and they've done the treble over us; sooner or later, the captain of the ship has gotta take the blame. Their third-choice goalkeeper and did we test him? And then the nail in the coffin ? a goal from Carroll of all people.

I know there's no money at Goodison but if that's your only excuse then Moyes will get off scott free for life. It's time to take a punt, otherwise we're doomed for life. Kenwright ain't going anywhere and Moyes ain't good enough to take Everton any further.

WE'RE ON THE MARCH WITH MOYSEY'S ARMY? ? not anymore, we're not ? unless you're happy being the perennial losers. If this club doesn't change soon... were doomed!

Well, I've gotta go cos I'm getting messages from Reds from all angles and I ain't got no answers....

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we will win nothing under Moyes. He does not have the mentally that will win you a trophy. Especially in knock out competitions.

No risk, no reward. Moyes will simply never take a risk and the worst thing happened by us going in front. Just as it did in Moyes's last biggest game (the Chelsea final) we sat back and got what we deserved: nothing.

Another disappointing season now already over. Even finishing above the shite is no consolation to losing to them 3 fucking times.

Does anyone really think that we will win anything under Moyes? Sad to ask this question because I know Moyes would be hurting more than anyone else today. It is just that he doesn't have what it takes to be a winner.

He is an excellent "survival" manager ? the same as Sam Allardyce, Pardew ? but he will not win anything. His supporters will point to the huge gulf in spending power (which is true), but haven't Portsmouth won it before?

There was just too much negativity from Everton going into this game (Moyes : "Liverpool are the favourites", Round: "Liverpool have a fantastic team"). I didn't see any of the rallying calls from Everton's side. I expected Neville to come out and say "We want to win it for David Moyes on his 10th year", etc.

Everton have lost the winning mentality ? and the negativity permeates from top to bottom. Changes are needed otherwise I see us slipping into obscurity.

I feel for all fellow Blues, I really do.

The truth is that the results recently have just covered up Everton fans problems with Moyes and BK. Moyes has proven yet again he is LFCs bitch, forever making life easier to his fellow scotsman. It's simply not acceptable that he continues to manage us, the vast majority of fans have realised that today. When most of the fans who went to the game arrive back of Merseyside you will see just how angry Everton fans are. Losing to a decent Liverpool side is bad losing to an awful Liverpool side is simple unforgivable. Why don't we just not even bother to play the Merseyside derby just give them 6 points at the start of the season because under Moyes we'll never beat them. David Moyes Liverpool's greatest manager since Bob Paisley, we're forever in their shadow get used to it. As Alan says we are true deluded 31 000 of us travelled down to watch that shite.

Seems to me that with derbies it all revolves around hope and expectation. We go into them hoping that we will win and they go into them expecting to win (regardless of how shite they are playing). If you look at Moyes' record against them over the last 10 years it appears that he hasn't got what it takes to change this mindset. Talking them up obviously doesn't work but it does supply him with ready made excuses when we yet again have to accept what is becoming all to inevitable when we are coming off the field with our tails between our legs having been put in our place yet again.

We never learn.

I never learn. Yet again I got caught up with the euphoria and the "bring it on" calls from fellow Blues.

I feel sick today.

When they equalised, you just knew that we'd blown it. Again.

Moyes started with the team we expected. I don't particularly blame him today. He does need to preach to his players to keep the ball though.

Why do we always seem like rabbits in headlights against the redshite though? We're above them in the league. We should have shown more character and belief as we did in the Sunderland game.

Ultimately, the worst red shite team that I can remember has won one trophy and is in the final of another.

I would like to make a point about Drenthe. What kind of a player does not want to play in an FA cup semi final showcased around the world to millions? This is the second or third time now we hear he has been missing from the squad due to family matters. Now dont get me wrong family comes before anything but unless it was a matter of life or death(and please forgive my ignorance if it was because of a matter like this but at the moment we know nothing)then what kind of player cannot or does not want to be involved in such a high profile win at all costs game such as this????

We were crying out for a player to run at their defence today, someone of his nature and yet again he is unavailable....im sorry but if thats what he thinks of the club and its supporters and his team-mates then i dont want him at all..... and trust me he was needed.......granted we dont know why but as i say unless its life or death then whats his excuse???think he let Everton football club down an as much as we need a player of his quality if hes not prepared to fight for the shirt then see ya later Royston.....

I saw Kenwright being interviewed by ESPN before the game in his usual smug boys' pen fashion.

There was no sign of him afterwards. Of course.

Moyes's tactics today were awful, trying to defend a one goal lead, defending too deep, leaving Jelly isolated. I agree he lost the game psychologically beforehand.

Today was his failure and I kust dont understand why we can play so well the last three games then revert to this dross against our biggest rivals.

But the real issue remains Kenwright who has set a yardstick of failure at every level of our club. The only criteria that matters to him is that he remains Chairman. Everton need an massive overhaul and it must start with Kenwright shipping out.

I didn't get involved in all the Hullabaloo leading up to the game, eg, "Caroll is a Donkey", "We will win 4-0", etc etc because I knew what would happen. It always does. Moyes can't win when it counts... he never has done at Everton.

Chelsea 2009 Wembley thought we had seen the back of Osman but no, he still gets 90 mins... Doing What FFS??? Moyes, as I have said for years, is a terminal loser with no arse whatsoever. I used to get slaughtered for calling DM a coward... now, it's his first name on here.

He needs to move on in the summer and a fresh face should come in to try and take this team over the next hurdle, whih Moyes has proved that he can not do. See you soon on here Marshy.

Still down here, in a hotel room in Ealing. Too gutted to go out....what sort of halftime teamtalk must Moyes have given to cause that second half performance. They were shite and tbere for the taking. Us? Mental block....it's Liverpool we cant possibly win.....not unless we have someone at the helm who can convince us otherwise. Moyes doesnt seem able to do that. Gutted gutted gutted!

Chin up Tony. We (the fans) were fantastic today. I was looking at the footage to took on my phone today and none of it was of the match. It was all of us. We're Everton.

Tim Cahill, I love: he is a blue through and through... but he ain't a creative or a holding midfielder. Tim should have been brought off, not swapped with Felli.

YOU FUCKED UP AGAIN, MOYES.

Have to disagree about Gibson, he hardly left the centre circle? instead of going to win the ball he backed away from at least 4 tackles. Also for the record, Coleman is a liability, well and truly lost his way.

If we forgive Moyes for that humilation then we will forgive him for anything. There's no excuse, Everton lost the game rather than Liverpool winning it. Liverpool are not a good cup team, they were just lucky to be playing a shambles.I think that recent easy 3-0 Moyes designed Liverpool win gave them all the confidence they needed going into this match,

It was obvious after 10 minutes that we were never going to win the game. We are psychologically in awe of Liverpool. We had no belief. Our passing game and attacking intentions were non existent. The space we gave their midfield was shocking. It was like Gerrard had hypnotized them. Even when Liverpool gave us a blunder goal we couldn't step it up. As usual we sat back and let them build up a momentum that would never allow us back into the game.

The final scoreline should have been much more decisive for them. Cardiff City gave them a much more competitive match.

IMO only Jelavic put in the effort. I expect him to be dropped by Moyes at some point next season, be sold and then flourish at his new club.

I've always said Distin is accident prone. Why not just kick the ball out of play rather than lay it on a plate for Saurez? Saurez destroyed him today.

Moyes has already destroyed our box of tricks Drenthe. I'm sure Drenthe will not hang around with this idiot for much longer.

Also Pienaar must be mad considering returning to a club that's just sold him. This is luck that Moyes doesn't deserve.

Over the next few days we will hear every excuse imaginable for this unforgiveable performance, all of them will be delusional crap.

Joe Royle, scouser equals passion, how many derbies did he lose?.

Sorry, I'm 55 years of age, but that's the last time I saw passion from all the players.

wish I had something constructive to add to all this.

All I keep thinking of is the soundtrack to the film Magnolia....Tom Cruise and all that....

Aimee Mann sings a song " it ain't gonna stop till you wise up" Finally turns into "it ain't gonna stop so just give up "
Well that's it for me...we may as well be in the Norther Prem or whatever the fuck they call it now
WE WILL NEVER GET ONE OVER THEM get fucking used to it !!

Gutted....... totally gutted!!!

I was not fortunate to be at the game so sat down with a great deal of optimism to see my beloved Everton beat the Kopites to reach the Cup Final. But before the game I felt a nervous disposition and couldn't shake it off even when Jelavic scored.

Then the inevitable happened and they're back in the game. Then the final blow in the last few minutes and mine (and all Evertonians) worst nightmare has come true.

I have had time to think on my emotions after today's game and have read a great deal of the comments on here tonight. My hurt can't be as bad as those of you who have been at the game. Your support was brilliant as always and a credit to the Club. I'm also taken by the criticism of David Moyes: I agree he got it badly wrong today. Sure, he can't be blamed for Distin's horrendous backpass or Coleman's reckless challenge (although I feared he was going to see red). You can't blame Moyes for some ridiculous refereeing decisions (the bookings, the free kick awarded on the edge of Liverpool's box for no reason just prior to the equaliser) or for Suarez's disgraceful and downright cheating.

Having said that we were too negative, we lacked ideas in the second half particularly, left Jelavic all on his own and bringing on Victor Anichebe was too little, too late.

I was in the Moyes camp, but after today events and reading the comments from you Evertonians (and you get to watch the Blues more than I do so have a more informed view than I do), I am starting to question whether it's time for a change. But then who? Phil Neville is not the answer I'm sure. Billic? maybe. I don;t know.

We all love this great club and as fans I believe we deserve better. It hurts us all to suffer defeat by them at any time but this one is particularly devastating especially as we were being tipped to win it and at the same listening to those blinkered Kopites on how we would be rabbits in the headlights, listening to that idiot Phil Thompson on Sky Sports last week dismiss Everton like we were insignificant, how we would only have to see the red shirts and fold........ yeah right!!! Who's laughing now? That hurts!¬!!!!

The only saving grace for me was that my brother (a Kopite) wasn't with me to watch it: I've got to face his smugness tomorrow though and that will hurt even more.

Alan McGuffod #214.

I am one of those who calls the RS 'deludes' and will continue to do so, no matter what you say. (red on a wind up?)

This mob always say at the start of every fucking season that they'll 'win the Premier League' and are always well wide of the mark, this is why many of us refer to these jokers as the 'deludes'.
