Who's Gonna Start?

 76 Comments: First  |  Last

I have just found out that Baines picked up an injury on England duty and has returned to Everton. I think it was a hamstring injury.

Also, I have just discovered that "Big" Vic picked up an injury playing for Nigeria and is expected to be out for 2-3 weeks.

So...........who's gonna start on Saturday if these two are out?

I know a lot of you don't think Moyes has the "balls" to throw in Stracqualursi straight away and many of you have constantly bemoaned our lack of cover at left back.

My own opinion is that Moyes will play Saha from the start (if he is actually fit?) and at left back..............i am not sure.

Who would you play??

I would LIKE to see Denis and Drenthe start the game myself. I would even consider putting Neville at left back and Hibbert at RB. Distin is an option too, with Heitinga partnering Jagielka at centre half.

I feel that if we put the new lads in from the start it might help get the crowd a bit more 'up for it'. I accept that they may be complete shite but there is only one way to find out I suppose.

Lee - "I accept that they may be complete shite." ? What sort of response is that? Firstly, Drenthe has played at Real Madrid so I guess he's not that bad. As for the lad upfront, if he read the response he has had from contributors on this site alone, if I was him I'd take a U-turn and go home! Poor, Lee... really poor!

Am I right in thinking that Moyes has put Neville at LB before now? And that would almost certainly mean Hibbert at RB.

I like the idea of Distin moving over and Heitinga going back, but it almost certainly won't happen. Just like either of the two new signings starting.

Just three injuries and the true size of the "squad" shows itself, can anyone name the starting 11 and bench for the weekend and how many of them have kicked a ball in the EPL? Hangs head shaking it and gets no pleasure from the obvious fucking told you this was coming moment

Well if Baines is injured then Royston can play as an attacking full back in his place. I think that could happen, with Fellaini, Rodwell, Osman, Barkley and Billy in midfield. Although Jack or Ross will be on the right i'm guessing with Osman behind Saha. The rest will be as you were with Denis on the bench.

Btw I cannot think of any other midfielders we have at this present moment in time that is not injured, is that really all we have?

Hopefully Baines will be fit for Saturday. Otherwise Drenthe has played at left back previously.

I would have thought that if Anichebe and Saha were injured that Cahill would start. but apparently he may be injured as well now.

Oh well, I'm not going to moan elsewise our Captain might 'savage' me.

Gueye is apparently still injured so I expect Drenthe will start at LB or LM although it wouldnt surprise me if Neville started at LB.

Christ Jay forgot that from the other thread, that means out of the 18 we have

Anichebe - injured
Baines - injured (please get well by Saturday)
Saha - who knows?
Cahill - injured
Gueye - injured
Yobo - is he still here?

so thats 4 out of 18 injured, another who could be depending on if his cotton wool falls off between now and then and another who might be i Turkey already - is that even enough left for a starting 11 and bench without choosing some of our schoolkids again?

I'd play Neville, Heitinga, Jags, Distin accross the back which is still decent.
Midfield of Osman, Fellaini, Barkely, Rodwell Drenthe and Saha up top.
Bench is looking very sparse - Mucha, Hibbert, Strack., Bily, Baxter, Velios and one other??
This demonstration needs to work.

Isn't Luke Garbutt meant to be promising in the left back position? Or is he failing to deliver at his current level? I don't know and would welcome enlightenment from those who do. He did cause a lot of ill feeling a feew years ago when we got hime from Leeds, so I was hoping he may be worth it.

Still, it makes no difference I fear, Moyes will usually play someone out of position rather than take what may be a risk with a youngster. I think it's it'll be Neville myself.

It did not need a body language expert to see Cahill had picked up a severe leg injury against Thailand. He is now with the Australia squad preparing for a WC qualifier in Saudi Arabia.

In light of Everton?s worrying injury list if Tim played in the Saudi game.it would display a lack of respect to our club and supporters. If anything he should be recuperating at Finch Farm already in preparation for the Villa game. Whether or not he risks further damage is he facing a long journey only a day or two before the Villa game.

Much maligned Capello and Nigeria showed common sense by releasing Baines and Victor. We should expect similar action from Australia.

Re: number 40.

James Wallace is a central midfielder who, to my knowledge, has never played left back. The reserve team left backs are Jake Bidwell and Luke Garbutt.

DIstin and Drenthe have played at left back in the past, and Phil Neville earned most of his England caps as a left back, and I would rather see any one for hem playing left back than any of the reserves.

I can see Drenthe loving his debut if he's going to get barked at by Captain 'Chunt' Neville from behind and Moyes from the side.

But Heitinga can play RB, which would be preferable to the dynamic passing of Hibbert and Neville at fullback.

I'd like to see The Drac given a go later on, but Vellios given a chance. Baxter would just get stomped on.

Otherwise, it'll be normal service in the middle of the park pretty much...

As long as we have Osman starting, we will be weak in midfield. Believe me, he is well past his sell-by date literally but he gets in by default and we have to get by. Villa will have new players on view aiming to impress and Everton should counter but Moyes usually starts them on the bench and will bring them on when we go behind.

Have to disagree there about Osman. Think a couple of years ago you'll have been right, but last season he really picked up some form, almost out of nowhere, and i think he's continued that on into this season. Would def choose him over Rodwell at the mo, who seems to have lost all form and needs a big 'must try harder'.
