Does the Europa matter anymore?

 32 Comments: First  |  Last

Popping into the Freshy for a homeward pint tonight, I was confronted by the `other lot`with taunts that `a couple more wins will see you challenging for a Thursday night slot!`Now given that KK`s return has apparently guaranteed his team's return to the top four (you have to laugh, don't you?),are we going to get terribly excited merely about the possibility of a place in the Europa League?

Now don't get me wrong. I want us to be in contention for a top six spot all through the season. The finishing place money alone makes that a no brainer but is the 'also rans' competition of any significance in itself? Only this week we have seen all but Stoke City treating the Europa with disdain.

Even Birmingham City fielded a reserve team whist `Arry was warning Spurs fans that he intended to do the same in Salonika.I also remember the complaints from our own followers when David Moyes risked only our youth team in some far flung outpost of the competition!

They all say there`s no money in it,so is it possible to decline the invitation to take part so that 'overworked' players can avoid all risk of injury in striving to qualify for the bloody thing all over again in the next season?

Perhaps I'm counting our chickens but do Evertonians think, as I do, that the whole set up is becoming faintly ridiculous?

From a purely, it interfers in the business of, for some teams, ( or in Bham's case getting back in to )actually making a decent fist of their Premier League campaign.

In cash reward terms it is the very poor relation to the CL.

As Glory for the winners...no contest, everyone likes to win stuff.

What it should do and maybe for some does, is to make a statement...

This is us! here we are! we are the coming team, all aboard for CL riches and Glory.

What it also need is some one to put their money where their mouth is.

It is self evident that We have not in the past and show no likelyhood of in the future.

So to mis quote who ever ( Wilde ? )

The only thing worse than being IN the Europa Cup...is NOT being in it.

And until the game changes we have to go out and try to WIN every game ( not keep it tight and pinch one )

Then Worry about the Europa League...Or just go out and win that as well.

Doddy, we've barely got a squad big enough for the league these days so its pretty silly dreaming of more games than we can handle now.

When Moyes risked a youth team in the compettition, it was at Goodison - not in some far-flung outpost. Versus Bate Borisov if memory serves.

Always thought the UEFA cup was a nicer trophy than "old big ears," anyway. Would love to see us win it.

I also don't buy in to this nonsense about small squads. They're not pulling 13 hour shifts down a coal mine. They're travelling first-class to play 2 games of football a week. Poor players - my heart bleeds for em'..!

Moyes treated the Europa League with the repect it deserved. Only once we had qualified from the group stages did he play the kids.

If you are a real club then you go for it in every competition. Europe is a draw for foreign players and if we had any money then it would be a factor in attracting players.

We had a few years on the bounce in Europe and finished higher than the last two years. People talk about player fatigue but those UEFA cup games gave the players a lift.

I'd love us to get into the Champions League, but unless a miracle happens and we come 4th then the players should be working their arses off to get into the Europa and when we get their we should have the intention of winning it.

I'd love us to get back in the Europa League.

It's going to be very very hard, if not impossible, to qualify for the Champions League.

We need to get as much exposure as possible and I really regret not going to Nuremberg.

The Europa league should be binned off. Champions league should only be top3. Then a new competition for the FA Cup winners and positions 4-5. No fair play, League Cup or intertoto entries. This would greatly increase the quality of the competition as there would be major clubs in it and hence more money from TV and Sponsorship.

Doesn't really matter, as soon as we played a team anyone had actually heard of we always got twated. Yes Fiorentina was a great night, but we still went out. I'd just like us to concentrate on winning a domestic cup. How expectations have fallen over the years.

They should make it the winners of Europa qualify for champions league the following season, that would make a huge difference.

It occurs to me that as teams are eliminated from the Champions League they get dumped into the Europa. Would it,therefore, not be appropriate if the prize for winning the minor competition was a place in the following season`s `big` league? Not only quid quo pro but also a massive incentive to treat the damned thing seriously!

1-4 Chums League

5-8 UEFA cup

Cup Winners - Cup Winners!

easy!

I don't think European football suits Moyes the game against Sporting Lisbon proved that. We've performed quite well in group stages, because away goals don't matter. The problem is Moyes doesn't have the ablitiy to do anything except play passionate hard working football which doesn't really work in europe. Spurs only took 200 fans to Greece which is pretty pathetic. The Europa is great for some teams the likes of Lech Poznan, Paok and other Eastern European clubs but English fans just consider it a chore. Just look at Liverpools pathetic attendances last year they couldn't even sell out their games in the Semi Final.

The Europa league is cheapened by backdoor entries and CL clubs getting in after falling at the first hurdle. It should be reformatted to be like the CL just with less prize money but more than it currently gives. Simple.
As for team selection, I think you should play your strongest 11, then if you qualify early you can blood some youngsters when it doesn't matter.

Charlie Adam just sent off, haha.

Kevin in the ideal world 13 men fucking about for 90 minutes twice a week does sound like money for old rope, remind me again how long the injuries to Yakubu, Arteta, Jagielka, Fellaini and Anichebe stopped them playing for? What would a serious injury to Baines do to us? If you add to that suspensions (you really want your players to make tackles dont you?) and soon enough injuries and suspensions actually bite into that piece of piss ideology thinking, oh and throw in a few internationals to the mix just to give it a bit more spin whilst you are at it.

Remind me how big the 85' squad was? The one that Kevin Moran denied a treble too?

Sure, let's wrap the boys in cotton wool, surrender ambition, forget aspiration & fret about potential injuries.

Im a bit old school on this one Im afraid.
Why should 4th get into the 'Champions' league..
One tournanemt for the league winners to play eachother would be more interesting.
Europa becomes cup winners / second place teams in top leagues ?
It would sort out the crazy money situation in England thats for sure.

Anyway, lets all hope that playing strikers at home to an ale house team and winning was just a one off.. and we can get back to some proper moaning soon !!

I can remember when the UEFA cup meant something, it was taken seriously and even clubs like Ipswich Town and Dundee United got to the final in recent years, it was always seen as the second of the three European prizes, with the now defunct ECWC coming in at last place, although no-one cared much about that on one evening in Holland 26 years ago.

Now it's called the 'Europa League' WTF, and the glory or magic of the competition some people held has fallen away and it's going the way of the domestic League Cup I think, whereas some will only sneer at it or see it as small beer regardless of who they follow.

I'd be more than pleased if we could grab a UEFA spot this season, obviously Champions League seems a bridge too far but I'd love to see Everton in Europe again by next autumn, even better if they could feature one or two matches on terrestrial television as they did before.

Gavin #14, sort of makes you wonder how teams managed when there were 11 players and no substitutes doesn't it?

They still played league games on Saturdays, European games AND internationals midweek.

There was no need to change things the old Cup Winners Cup and Euefa Cups were far better competitions imo. The Europa League needs to be a knock out competition with a lot less teams in it, but eh greed always wins out in these situations. When reaching the last four the tournament becomes interesting untill then its a fuckin nuisance.

Lets face it anything run by the old farts at Euefa is going to be open to attack with Football its fans, Entertainment and Clubs being the last thing of interest to the corrupt men who run these competitions.
