Former favourite looking for comeback

It's been 18 months since Dan Gosling made his highly controversial move to Newcastle. His recovery from the knee injury he suffered with Everton in March 2010 has been long and painful.

Since regaining match fitness after a very long recovery period that included breaking down last season, he has played barely a handful of games for the Barcodes, but the visit of Everton may see him on the bench tomorrow, or even getting a start against the team where he played for 2½ years, scoring memorable goals against Liverpool and Manchester United.

It seems that Gosling made the move to Newcastle in the belief that Everton didn't want him any more, while Everton thought they had a "gentleman's agreement" over his unwritten contract extension. The club were publicly livid when his agent engineered the move on a free transfer, despite the player carrying a serious knee injury that would require such a long recovery period.

The perception was that, when fit, he was worth around £4M and that gross mismanagement of his contract by the Everton administration had allowed him to leave for nothing. Yet his struggle to gain a place in Alan Pardew's rampant side this season, despite being fully fit, suggests he has a long upward climb to get back to where he was with Everton.
