Clattenburg to ref Villa match

Clattenburg only saw fit to show Kuyt a yellow card for this dangerous challenge

Controversial referee Mark Clattenburg, who hasn't refereed an Everton match for over four years after the infamous "Clattenburg derby" has been named as the match official for Aston Villa vs Everton on the 14th.

Clattenburg sent off Tony Hibbert following a 50-50 challenge with Steven Gerrard in the Goodison derby in October 2007 where replays suggested any contact was probably outside the area. It was a decision clearly influenced by a word by Steven Gerrard as the official was clearly going to only book the Everton man.

Clattenburg then compounded the that decision by failing to give a red card for a two-footed airborne assault by Dirk Kuyt on Neville or two very strong claims for a penalty for the Blues, the second of which in stoppage time would have given Everton the chance to claim a point.

Liverpool won the match 2-1 and though Clattenburg retired from the game briefly amid a financial scandal, he returned to the Premier League's refereeing line-up a couple of seasons ago (with a new hair system in place!) but this will be the first time the FA have dared appoint him to officiate a game involving Everton.
