Cahill red card appeal turned down

Everton's appeal against Tim Cahill's sending off at the end of the Newcastle game has been rejected by the Football Association.

The decision is not a surprising one — the Australian grabbed Yohan Cabaye around the throat at the final whistle of the Blues' 3-1 win and whatever compelled him to do it, the authorities couldn't be seen to be condoning such conduct.

The decision means that Cahill will be suspended for the first three matches of next season.

The 31 year-old issued a statement through his management company accepting the suspension but explained that he was disgusted by comments made by Cabaye.

"My reaction at the end of the game was out of character but I was disgusted at comments made to me by Cabaye.

"I don't wish to elaborate on the exact detail of what was said - but his words have no place either on or off the football pitch.

"Cabaye has apologised via his club's website and as far as I am concerned the matter is now closed."
