... but Jagielka is only on standby
Leighton Baines has been called up for his first major Finals tournament after being named in Roy Hodgson's squad foe the European Championships in Poland/Ukraine next month.

There was no place for Phil Jagielka, though, who is on standby should another player have to drop out.

Jagielka was a regular starter under Hodgson's successor, Fabio Capello, but was edged out this time by Phil Jones of Manchester United, who was presumably seen as a more versatile alternative.

Baines will vie with Ashley Cole for the left-back position.

John Ruddy, the ex-Everton player who had such a good season with Norwich, is in as the third 'keeper, joining other ex-Blues Joleon Lescott and Wayne Rooney.

Meanwhile, Shane Duffy has been included in the Republic of Ireland's U-21 squad for their forthcoming games against Denmark and Italy.
