Heitinga and Holland on the brink

14/06/2012 |  15 Comments: First  |  Last
John Heitinga is in danger of making an unexpectedly early return from Euro2012 after the Netherlands lost their second Group B game, going down 2-1 to Germany who are firmly in the driving seat in the "Group of Death".

Uncharacteristically porous at the back, the Dutch were behind 2-0 by half time to two excellent Mario Gomez strikes.

Robin van Persie pulled one back in the second half but Holland couldn't find an equaliser as Germany shut up shop and the Oranjie will need to beat Portugal convincingly and hope that the Germans beat Denmark to have any hope of progressing to the next phase.

The problem with the Dutch team, throughout history, is there are too many Dutch players.

I must admit that I did not stay and watch the second half of the last night.

I must also say that my eyes are not what they used to be, and I may have been deceived - BUT did anyone else think that Johnny had a mare.

To my mind he was fully responsible for the 1st German goal, he lost his man.
Moments later he was crouching in a defensive position watching the opponent to his right and as the freekick was taken on the left, he turned around with his back to the incoming German who had a freerun at the ball and should have scores.

This to my mind was certainly not his best game, perhaps he was being played out of position, perhaps... but by then I had had enough.

PS I voted Johnny our Player of the Year - so you see why I was disappointed with his performance.

Heitinga clearly has shown in these 2 games as he did in the World cup final that he is simply not international class. Shame because now we have little chance of recouping any decent money for him.

Heitinga was terrible but then so were the whole dutch team. Very poor but you can't just single out Heitinga.

Thought they were weak in the back, period. Not just Johnny. On the other hand, Germany has some attacking players can make a defense look that way.

I was most impressed after RVP scored his goal. Germany just smothered the Dutch for the rest of the game. Complete control.

Johnny left Gomez by himself for their first goal and his marking on Badstuber for a free header that should have been their second goal was abysmal.

Slightly worrying for long term prospects of our defense!

The Germans look very very good and in Schweinsteiger they have a player whose passes can tear open a defence, could well end up player of the tournament.

In England it seems to be widely accepted that Cole (he not even the best in the England squad imo) has been the best left back in the world for years yet every time I see Lahm he is outstanding, solid in defence, excellent going forward and rarely gives the ball away.

I have to agree: Johnny was terrible last night, he looked as if he was on another planet at times.

I wouldn't worry too much the germans were absolute class. Heitinga won't be up against that in the Premiership. The dutch left back was shockingly bad.

Agree with Paul David Lahm is the best fullback in the business. Made Robben look very average.

More rest for him if they go out early. Hollands loss, Everton's gain.

He had a mare but every player has that once in a while and the whole Dutch side was pretty poor imo. I'd rather he plays likewearing orange than when wearing blue!

They still have a small chance I guess, whilst the Germans would love to send the Dutch home, it would be against their mentality to give teh Danes a result. All rest on Portugal as I can't see the Danes getting anything from their last game.

Wouldn't think that many forward lines in the Premier League could match that of the Krauts.

Nothing too much to worry about with Heitinga in the defence.

I'll say it again - Johnny must have wished he was playing in a decent team as usual compared the the shambles surrounding him last night. I have no worries for his continued performance as the rock of our defence.

Having said that, the Germans could have taken on anyone and won. They're back to their best. Odd things happen in ko games, but they look like winners.

Keith - Thought the same.

Not to mention all the attacking Dutch players who play zero defense.

Germany was the better team over 90 minutes. Couldn't have hurt the Deutchers turned Gomez loose on a teenage LB, could it?

In fact, when is the last time the Netherlands played Total Football? Been awhile, no?

Come back Johnny. Come back.

Really couldn't give a shit how Johnny plays for Holland, what I do know is that as a premier league centre half for Everton he is consistently very, very good!

It only matters how he plays for Everton, plus not a great deal of defensive support from the midfield especially as Roben gave the ball away time after time?
