Pienaar could now be staying with Spurs

Steven Pienaar has admitted that he could yet stay at Tottenham if the new manager assures him that he will be part of his first team plans.

It was expected that Pienaar would look to seal a permanent move back to Everton, but he has suggested that he could yet have a future in north London, and the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas to replace Harry Redknapp may be the game-changer for Pienaar and Everton.

"I'll wait and see who is appointed at Spurs. I need to know if I'll still be used," Pienaar is quoted as saying in The Metro.

Pienaar still has a contract until the end of the 2012-13 season and he did prove that he can be a more than useful player when he returned to Everton last season.

This afternoon's appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as Spurs manager after his break from football since being canned as the Chelsea manger can only deepen the uncertainty over Pienaar's return to Goodison Park...

Pienaar is still a Spurs player and is/should be expected to give the typical answer in these circumstances. He knows he can't burn his bridges if Everton can't afford the fee.

Probably too much to expect, but I would have preferred it if he had said something along the lines of, "Unless the new manager can guarantee that I will be involved as much as I was at Everton, I don't think it will be worthwhile staying. I have proved that I am good enough to be a starter in the EPL, and I would not be serving myself well if I didn't have the ambition to try to do so."

He could just be looking for a loyalty bonus, but it would be nice if he bigged up his return to Goodison. Anyone else worried that he may not really want to take a pay cut just to play regularly where he would be properly appreciated by the fans?

Ian, how would he burn his bridges by showing ambition?
If we can't afford him he can go elsewhere or just sit in the stands at Spurs and count his wages as he has done for the majority of the time he has been there. If he is all about playing and using his talent where it matters then now – after a series of good displays and coveted by at least one other team – is the time to be bold.

But the point is, Si, that Spurs ARE paying his wages and so he has a duty to respect them. What's more, there's a good chance AVB WILL play him every week. But probably not if he checked the papers and saw Pienaar had been mouthing off about getting out of there.

I really, desperately hope we sign Pienaar. But you can't blame him for being respectful to the club that pays his wages, especially when they're in the process of appointing a new manager with new ideas.

I don't see how being positive about your ability and pointing out that you have been under-used is being disrespectful to anyone or even mouthing off. Of course if he swaggers up to AVB and prods him in the chest, then he might come across as being a jumped-up little shit rather than a player that desperately wants to play.

Don't see that his chances under AVB will be any greater unless Spurs lose a flood of players, and I presume that the recruitment of AVB was meant to forestall that.

Let's not forget Pienaar's history with us. Not long ago he was all for coming back to Everton, now he's changed his mind. As much as I'd love to see him back because of his ability how long till he's tempted away again. No loyalty in my opinion.

Deputy Dawg wouldn't give him a game and for a song took a key midfielder away from a rival team, he's going to give AVB a chance to play him, he'll stay where he is.

That is the way I'm reading it. Unless AVB categorically states that he isn't in his plans then he will sit it out in London at least until Christmas.

Gav - let him kid himself he can displace Bale, and then we'll sign him for a million at Christmas with 6 months left on his deal.

Ian - we need him (or someone as good or better) for the start of the season. Just hope the club doesn't spend the summer trying to thrash out a deal, only to be left empty-handed.

Ian, what if AVB wants to play him in the middle of the park or as a rotation for Bale?
Ian Bennett
12 Posted 03/07/2012 at 22:00:09
Gav - Rotation for what Europa league? Going to play a head of modric or money for a replacement (moutinho)? They will have a couple of quid off corluka, krankjaer, so will not get lookin - just a bit of bravado now.

Si - hopefully, but not anything over 3m.

He could play anywhere across the spurs midfield. He only plays on the left for us as we have no one else who can! I imagine he will stay at spurs now. Can't see him getting much of a look in though. Lets just sign someone else and move on.
Ian Bennett

James - he isn't going to start ahead of Parker, Sandro, huddlestone, Lennon, bale, van der vaart, or presumably the new players he will sign either.

Back to the OP - given how long its taken Everton to do sweet FA since the season ended re bringing him back, I would not be surprised if SP never put on an Everton shirt again.

1.5 months now since the end of the season, so much for all the 'lets get the business done early' chat back in May.

Lets just seel Baines and be done with it so we can use the cash to bring in players before the 31 August.

(God I'm depressed, was a slim chance him going to Spurs, but was still a chance - another half a decade of him in the dug out - jeez!)

Spurs may be different to any other club, but the general rule is 'new manager, new team'. Money to spend. From now on we do it my way with my people. Villas Boas may be excited at the prospect of keeping Pienaar, but is more likely to have never heard of him. In the summer clear-out that is bound to come there Steven is likely to be looking for a club.

Who knows?

ps - Spurs sacked Arry. True. They did this to appoint Moyes. Not true.

And if anybody thought it was going to happen that way they should stop believing what they read in the (so-called) newspapers and what I can only imagine somebody must have been saying on Sky. Fantasy football.

Keith, I think AVB will remember Pienaar after his goal in the first few mins when we beat them at Goodison - part of the dodgy run that saw him sacked.

Ian Pienaar is as good as any of those players you mentioned.

What a surprise hey for all those deluded TW posters who tried to convince THEMSELVES and us that Pieenar just 'lurved' Everton and would do anything he could to get back to Goodison. When really all he wanted was MONEY. The money that comes from FIRST Team action and all the win bonuses that todays OVERPAID Prima Donnas receive.

Denis Richardson # 022 Haven't you woken up to the reality of Davey Moyes yet he bleats this self same mantra EVERY pre season then all the Media Luvvies and the TW sychophantic Moyesophiles bleat in return

"See Davey does want to and CAN make Everton great its just BK and lack of money that prevents him from doing so'".

And on and on it will go for , perish the thought, ANOTHER five or more seasons as Everton continue to play Dire Defensive football and STAGNATE under Davey Boy.

Ian, while I'm not sure pienaar is in the same bracket as bale or van der vaart, he is a top player and one I think AVB might want to have a look at. AVB favours a high line and pressing game which will suit pienaars high energy style along with his technical prowess and quick passing style.

It does depend on who else leaves and arrives at spurs but I think the appointment of AVB lessens our chances of getting pienaar back.

Personally I think any team in the league could use Pienaar. Loads of energy, willing to hold the ball, and a clever user.

Might not be as flashy or as pacy as Bale but a successful team will have more Pienaars than Bales in it.

Peter, let's just assume that every time you write Moyes' name it's preceded by a litany of negative adjectives that begin with D. That way you won't have to write them and we won't have to read them.

Lot of talk about 'respect'... I don't remember a lot of respect for the club or fans when he refused record breaking contract terms then, after months of haggling, getting on his bike to pedal 'dahn sahf'.

What goes around etc.

And in my two posts above I used the D's specifically for Davey how many times . Still its good to have a moan isn't it and Steve King seems to think you are wonderful to. Now as to Dire Defensive football Everton play under said Davey thats another point entirely.

Spurs have just signed Sigurdsson which I guess must help our cause. Even if Modric leaves Pienaar must look at Bale, Van der vaart, Sigurdsson, Lennon (plus whoever else comes in) and think that he's not going to be first choice....

Tony #112, did he suggest when the deal was done? Like when the loan was put in, or after he returned to Spurs?

I cannot believe people are slagging off Moyes. He has worked wonders with what little help Kenwright as given him. He can only play to our strengths and that is not 4-4-2 which no decent team plays – it does not work.

And as for Pienaar, this is the second time he has messed us around; I hope he stays at Spurs and keeps that bench warm.

Dont forget that its the African Cup of Nations in a few months - in South Africa!! So he wont be available anyway!!

Fair play if he does grab the money, who knows what his family may have been through in the last few generations... BUT... the way he conducts himself, and the way his agent seems to operate, just smacks of double standards all round.

Everton will be fine without Pienaar if thats the case... he is not the superstar...

Matt, the lad said the deal was done weeks ago.....? Also reckons Pip has gone over to LA to speak to Landon... make of that what you will.

He has been right more times than not, I will give him that

Can't say who of course, but I was also told the Pienaar deal was already done, but I wont believe it until he is here... The deal was Saha would go to Spurs on a free/loan until the end of the season, Peanuts would come to us, and if things worked out for both parties concerned then Peanuts would re-sign with the wage increase he wanted before he left Everton and we would pay a fee of £2 million.... Like I said, I will wait and see...
