Java Cup organisers intend to sue over Everton withdrawal

Liga Prima Indonesia Sportindo, the company who organised the aborted Java Cup in Jakarta scheduled for this weekend, have announced their intention to sue Everton for pulling out of the competition at short notice.

After Galatasaray canceled their participation in the inaugural competition over the weekend, Everton withdrew themselves after failing to receive timely guarantees over the replacement opposition.

“As of [Tuesday] night, we were still discussing with Everton and we didn't have any impression that they would pull out," LPIS CEO Widja Widjajanto told reporters.

"But suddenly, on their website, they announced their withdrawal.

"We will take legal action as we've already made full payment to them.

“They are lying if they said they did not know the opponent in the tournament because in the contract Everton agreed to come regardless whoever they would play.”

The organisers claimed that Uruguayan side Nacional had been drafted in to replace Galatasaray in a four-team tournament that was to be rounded out by the Malaysian and Indonesian national teams, but Nacional denied their involvement.

Not much point suing us - we've got no money. Will they take Yobo instead?

Sounds like a loud rant for the benefit media, to be followed by a quiet retreat once the incident is forgotten. We wouldn't have pulled out without a proper reason and I'm sure if they tried to sue us (which I doubt they will), it will be batted away easily enough.

Likely, there will have to be some "face saving" arrangement put in place if it doesn't go ahead. The Asian people think differently to the westerners and their laws are based on a totally different foundation than ours.

Indonesia has a massive population and the Everton brand might take a hit to its future popularity (sales of merchandise!!!) if it is not handled properly.

Let the lawyers settle the issue (though I would not be surprised if the Club has once again shot itself in the foot).

Bob @039 - sales of merchandise in Indonesia? Erm.... can any Evertonians based in Indonesia enlighten us on how easy it is to pick up an Everton jersey over there?

It is not ideal, how is not knowing your opponents a reason for pulling out of a tournament and losing a good marketing opportunity?

Jason @045 - uhh.. a real one? I'm sure such a thing does not exist...

Jason, Everton say there are other reasons. I would hope and expect that Everton didn't enter a Contract which did not list who we would play (as the organisers suggest). That would be ridiculous.

I'm also sure the Contract would have given us some get out clauses along the lines that we have already fed to the media.

What you're seeing from this statement is that they know we will be claiming against them (travel reimbursements to supporters is just the beginning) and they are getting their counter claim in.

Claim and counter claim. If it's in the media it will look pretty messy but it's just normal business when a Contract goes wrong.

I'm indonesian and a big fan of this club. I'm very sorry not to see Everton play in Indonesia.

Promoters and organizers are really disappointing, I also recognize their incompetence in the care of the tournament like this and I admit I hate them.

Indonesia is a country with a population the fourth largest in the world, people here are very enthusiastic. With the advent of the news that the tournament will be attended by Everton, the club should be aware that they can promote and make this country the biggest fan base in Asia.

Before the tournament a lot of people have been wondering about Everton, even many of those who originally were supporters of big clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barca, etc. In fact, many of them are preparing to buy Everton jerseys in previous weeks, only to watch and see Everton play and support IndoEvertonian (which is the Everton fans in Indonesia).

If it can be checked or anyone who might be asked, maybe they will see the real data in evertondirect.com, or on ebay, or other merchants, I'm sure their sales to Indonesia are very very very very great.

I say this for it to be considered by the management and the club because, the people were very enthusiastic and very happy to see Everton... but, when they withdrew from the tournament, contrary to antipathy, were very disappointed. Many of them can not accept this and then poured their anger on social media, as can be checked at Everton fan page and on Twitter.

If there is an official board or Everton administrator here, please think back to those things. Thanks. COYB!!

Bob Parrington # 039 Everton have no profile or reputation in Indonesia whatsoever so there is nothing to damage.

My optimistic nature is starting to believe that this may be a blessing.
Every season we go on some far flung trip (USA last year, Aus the year before, Indonesia this) where we waste time playing shitty sides in a different climate and always crawl across the start line when the Prem comes around.

Surely a change, any kind of change to our usual pre-season must be a good thing. Lets face it.. Our start couldn't be any worse than usual.

As an Everton fan based in Singapore, it was well known out here that the reason no tickets went on sale was because LPIS could not secure sponsors to finance the tournament.

My brother-in-law in Jakarta told me a two weeks ago not to bother booking a flight. Should have thought on and given BK a ring.
