Sheedy to have surgery for cancer

, 22 August, 52comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton left-wing hero of the 1980s golden era and current coach, Kevin Sheedy, will have surgery later this week after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

The 52 year-old plans to return to his coaching role at Everton after his rehabilitation.

“It's not ideal but I have to remain positive, there is a history [of cancer] in the family,” Sheedy said

“It's so important that people don't ignore the early signs and symptoms and don't be afraid to consult a GP,” he added.

We at ToffeeWeb wish Kevin all the best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Just read on the EFC website that the legend, Kevin Sheedy, has the big C! feel gutted and very much mortal...

As with every blue nose in the world, my thoughts are with Kev Sheedy and i wish you a Speedy recovery.

Will never forget the free kick he scored in the top corner that was disallowed, but followed by a second goal, from the same free kick, into the opposite corner. BRILLIant.

Get well soon.

I've just heard the news about Kevin Sheedy fighting bowel cancer.

It came as a big shock to me, as I imagine it did to most Blues. A chilling reminder that even our heroes are mortal.

Sheedy was a true Blue legend and one of my boyhood heroes, the sublimely skilled creator whose wizard-like left foot set up or scored so many of those goals we all love to remember.

I can only join with all Evertonians and others around the world in wishing Kevin well in his battle for health.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Kevin at a lunch a few years ago, what a nice guy, no superstar ego about him at all. I mentioned to him that he used to take a bit of stick now and again from the crowd, he laughed and said he got a lot of stick a lot of the the time! He added that it didn't worry him in the slightest, even when he was having a bad day on the pitch he always knew he had the skill to score a goal or put a cross over to turn a game.
Good luck Kevin, take that same confidence with you into this operation and you will come through successfully and healthily. We'll be thinking of you at Villa on Saturday, remembering what was effectively a title winning thunderbolt from you at the same ground.

There'a huge family rooting for you Kevin - get well soon.

Most of us, unfortunately, know something about cancer, but just in case you don't, prompt surgery is by far the best, and most hopeful, treatment. Catch it early, cut it out and get it in the bucket.

Great player in his pomp, although his "apparent" workrate probably would have people frothing had he played in this area, with ToffeeWeb and other social media sites around.

His "It's not ideal" quote really does sum up his laid back attitude to life, which was actually not how he played - I even saw him get booked for a foul once! Always had time for the fans and I actually delayed him from talking to a reporter after a game at Goodison once.

The club has set up an email address (sheeds@evertonfc.com) for those who wish to send in their best wishes, however I'm sure he knows he has good thoughts from all Blues, and it seems a lot of "neutrals". As others have said, hope he sticks two fingers up to this as emphatically as he did to the Kop.

Sheeds you are truly one of the Greats, in your skill and achievements on the pitch, in your service to the club since your playing days ended, and in your lack of ego and the way you conduct yourself.

Everyone around the club is fighting alongside you. I doubt it is going to be easy for the next few months, but we can beat this thing. Good luck, see you soon back home at Goodison.

Brendan @ 355

"Two fingers up to the big C just lilke you gave them orrible shower!"

Totally agree with those sentiments

Charlie Adam is sitting there with his sweet left foot well underused waiting patiently to escape from alcatraz as Sheedy was. When he does he can get the legend that is Sheeds up in his recovery bed and smiling. Lightening strikes twice. The baton is passed.

Good luck Kevin you have the blues right now but the Blues will pull you through.

Gutted, Kevin gave me some of my finest memories in the game. I don't say this lightly and I dare anyone to challenge me but one of the finest to wear the Royal Blue. Also a gentle man of the finest order who I had the pleasure to meet once ( I was the slobbering drunk) but he gave me all the time he had. I think he appreciated the big sloppy kiss as well.
Keep positive Kevin and remember there are literally millions willing your recovery.

I remember his debut at Watford almost thirty years ago today. (28/8/82 ). He and the team were awful and lost 2-0. But a week later we played a very good Spurs team at Goodison and Kevin scored after seven minutes to set us on our way to a 3-1 win. He never really looked back after that and I remember his raking cross field passing as well as the terrific goals.

Get well soon, Kevin.

Puts everything into perspective. Nothing but the best for Sheeds as he was and is for EFC. The mind is a powerfull tool so keep fighting so you can continue to bring the youngsters through and we can see you back soon! Many fond memories but more importantly is Sheeds coming back and helping the dream live on!

www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/bowel/publications/the-facts.html

Anyone who is eligible and has not received the 'shit kit' are strongly advised to contact their doctor or the above link.

My wife was screened with this kit and Bowel Cancer detected.
But for the kit she would not have known anything about the cancer as she had no symptoms.

She was operated on and needed no further treatment. Two years down the line and she's now fine.

Your chances are significantly improved if they get it in time. Do it!!

Sheedy, brilliant player and we wish you all the best COYB>

Top, top player. You only need to watch the 86-87 season review DVD to see how good he was.

The blokes a legend. Remember very clearly being behind the goal at Villa Park 1987 . 17000 blue noses had taken two sides of the ground and we were playing shite. We got a free kick and the name 'Sheedy Sheedy' rang out. Bullet straight in the top corner and I ended up on my arse in a crowd of mental Blues but as the Addidas Gazelles danced on my head I was smiling like a cheshire cat. He was a fighter then and he'll fight this off now, I'm sure of it
