Symes hoping for Goodison outing

Leyton Orient's summer signing Michael Symes is no stranger to Everton and will be hoping to play a part in Wednesday's League Cup fixture agianst his old club.

The striker banged in quite a few goals for the Everton Academy teams over a decade ago, and is hoping to feature for Orient in Wednesday night's second round tie at the Premier League club where he spent more than ten years as a youngster before being released in 2004.

Michael Symes is a lifelong Everton supporter and would love the chance to play against the Toffees.

He said: “It's brilliant. I was at Everton for 11 years as a kid and I've supported them all my life so it will be great to go back there and play at Goodison Park.

"I'm from around that area so I'll have a lot of people coming to watch it. We're all looking forward to it and hopefully we can go there and give a good account of ourselves.”

Jamie Jones, the goalie, is also an ex Academy player.

I remember watching our reserves vs man utd the day after we sign Jasper Blonqvist. Came away thinking that Symes looked our best prospect

This is an ideal opportunity for Moyes to play his ''reserves'' like most other Prem.clubs will doubtless be doing and we shall probably see Mirallas and Velios getting time together to stake their claim along with Barkley and Gueye etc.

Other than that this competition serves little purpose for the Prem. clubs except for an entrance into the mediocre Europa league if they win it and of course a little extra cash for the lower clubs.

We would not be able to fill in the void because we do not have enough reserve players. Have you looked at our reserve squad in the OS, I did and I was shocked, we only have about 6 reserves, that is it.

And in our U-18 side there are probably only one or two up for the job. So Moyes is simply forced into picking from his first team squad which is also pretty small.

I think Moyes will field this side against Leyton Orient:

Mucha
Hibbert, Heitinga, Duffy, Garbutt (Distin)
Coleman (Naismith), Barkley, Junior, Gueye
Mirallas
Anichebe (Vellios)

This is the most likely team to play unless Moyes is desperate to get as far as possible and therefore not willing to change a winning team except maybe Howard, Neville and Fellaini.

But if he is wise which I think he is then he will want Barkley, Junior, Anichebe and Vellios to get some game time in order to get them ready in case of injuries. He will most likely think that the League is the most important thing and so will field a lesser side then normal.

Question is: Is that good enough in order to win the game? A lot will come down to the fitness of the players, if they are tired he will leave them out, if not he will want to have a strong bench in order to change the game if needed.

I must say I love the Cup, it is a perfect venue for players such as Barkley, Junior and Vellios to show what they have. It just gives Moyes the chance to see what form his reserves are in and if they are ready to step into the first team soon.

I love it, hope to see as many youngsters as possible, God knows we need some of them to step up this season.
