Everton named northwest Community Club of the Year

Everton were named Community Club of the Year at this evening's North West Football Awards in recognition of the club's Everton In The Community programme.

And while Steven Pienaar was pipped by Sergio Aguero for goal of the season — understandable for significance if not technique — and Roberto Mancini won the manager of the year gong for bringing the title to Eastlands, Everton's painter and decorator of 33 years won the Unsung Hero award.

I met a woman at a wedding once, she lives and works in Liverpool, when she found out I was an Everton supporter, she proceeded to tell me that she worked for some sort of community project or charity (was a while ago and I was slightly worse for wear) and that Everton were always helping and involved in community and social projects. Liverpool on the other hand did bugger all.

The general off the field goings on at Everton leave much to be desired, but this project along with the Former Players Foundation are truly excellent.

In year when we have heard much about disabled sport, it's worth remembering that Everton in the Community has been running something like twenty six disabled teams for a good few years now.

Congratulations to all involved, even BK, who not directly involved gives it his total support. All Evertonians should be very proud of this.
