Boxer eyeing Goodison fight-night

, 5 January, 21comments  |  Jump to most recent
Boxer and lifelong Evertonian Tony Bellew says the dream of staging a fight at his beloved Goodison Park this summer is edging ever closer to becoming a reality.

Should the Wavertree light-heavyweight be victorious in the final eliminator for the WBC world title in March then a world title bout at Goodison could be on the cards.

Referring to his agent, Bellew said, “We have spoken about it and fighting there would be the ultimate dream.

"Goodison Park under the lights would be the dream. It is crazy. I am now friends with the Chairman and I know he would love to have the fight at Goodison.

“I never ever thought that I would be talking about the possibility of fighting at Goodison."

Didn't know Bellew until reading of him in here some time back. YouTubed him. Looked alright. Anyone seen enough of him to tout his chances for a Title?

And if Goodison under the lights happens, I'll find the pay-per-view. That'll be cool to see.

Come on Tony Bellew!
I've followed his career so far - mainly because of the Evertonian link.
He's not far off reaching the very top and that would be great to see at Goodison Park.
It would be great to also see him hit the big time in the States - especially seeing the Everton FC badge at Caesar's Palace, MGM Grand, LV Hilton etc.
Great exposure for the club.
Top bloke (loved the pre-fight press conference v Cleverly "you rat!")
Following in the footsteps of another Blue - John Conteh?

For a second, I read this wrong, and thought it read "dream of starting a fight at Goodison Park"....

I'll watch this space.

I go to quite a lot of boxing matches, and have to say the ones held in football stadiums are generally shite. (I've seen Kevin Mirchell fight Michael Katsidis, and David Haye fight Derek Chisora at Upton Park.) The stands are always half empty and the ring is so far away that you can't see properly and as a result the atmosphere is flat. With god knows how many seats on the pitch, I estimate you'd need well over 50k to make the grand old lady seem anywhere near full. The only British boxer with anything like that kind of pull in recent years has been Ricky Hatton.

Venues like the Echo Arena are perfect. I saw Carl Froch beat Lucien Bute at the Capital FM Arena in Notts and I've never experienced an atmosphere like it. I have seen Bellew fight twice (at the Capital FM Arena a few weeks ago, and in Newcastle on Amir Khan undercard a few years ago). He's a very disciplined fighter and one of the best in the country. He definitely deserves his shot, and I'll be there to support him when he does. I just hope when it comes around it's in the arena. Sorry.

Bellew is far from world title quality. He never gives the 'chat' a rest either, anyone who follows him on Twitter will know what I mean – their timelines are no doubt flooded with his tweets. Someone should have a word and tell him to tone it down.

James #643 he's got a final eliminator to become mandatory challenger for the WBC belt. It'll no doubt be a tough fight, but he's an incredibly hard working and disciplined boxer. I think he's shown a lot of maturity in recent fights and has shown he can mix it with different styles. I think he'd give anyone a good fight. If he does become mandatory he'd be fighting Chad Dawson for the belt (as things stand) and I'd hazard a guess that Dawson would ensure the fight take place in the states.

Mark (684) - Much appreciated. Dawson is way beyond his sell-by date, nonetheless a true pro.

I wonder... do Bellew supporters have a call that sounds like Boruuuuuuuu?

Seems it would work.

Can we charge them £30m quid and have the cash in advance?

James (#688) at his last fight, on the Froch v Mack undercard the other week, there was a bunch of (presumably) Toffees to my left predictably singing his name to the tune of 'No Limit', á la Hibbo. Needless to say, I joined in!

Westerveld vs Jeffers undercard? All seriousness he has a lot of work to do from what I have seen.

David Price, despite being a red is the class act in the city. Hope he does well.

If Goodison Park is too big when a stage is set at the centre, can't it instead be set at a corner? Just a thought. :-D

Ian @ #772 – With all comments taken on board about our kid, I found your observation quite interesting. Pricey is really good friends with my lil bro and I don't wanna by any means start claiming one is better than the other in their respective divisions.

I would like you to elaborate a little more though on how you come to the conclusion that Pricey is "the class act in the city"? Have you watched our kid or Pricey at any considerable length to make this judgement or is this a case of just in your honest opinion?

Just for the record, nothing would make me feel more proud than to watch my lil bro waltz out on to the turf of GP with Z-Cars ringing out, with a chance of bringing home a world title to add to the British, Commonwealth & three (back to back) ABA titles he won, which may I add is a record still in the long and illustrious history of the ABA.

Give him all my best, Craig.

Anyone and I mean anyone who has the balls to get in a boxing ring at that level deserves the utmost respect, the training regime is bordering on murder and the commitment puts every other sport in the shade.

You then get in a ring with someone who's only aim is to smash your face in, I tried boxing as a teenager and believe me despite them gloves it fucking hurts like hell when you get hit.

Tell Tony to bring it home for all the Evertonians.

Ian #772 I'm a big fan of both Price and Bellew - as things stand Tony Bellew has probably fought a higher standard of opposition and has achieved more. I certainly fancy him to get a world title shot ahead of Price. Price seems to be the one getting the plaudits at the minute (probably because of the Olympic ties and his promoter who is doing a great job of bigging him up) but my worry about him at the moment is that he seems to get hit a bit too easy at times, and when he comes up against top class opposition I don't know whether he would get away with it. If Price had the kind of discipline that Bellew showed against McKenzie (2nd fight) or against Bolonti after his cut, then I think he'd be ready for a world title fight - but that will come with experience I guess.

Steven #683 I disagree that he is far from world title quality. In fact, given that Nathan Cleverly is a current 175lb world title holder, and Bellew pushed him right to the wire (and probably did enough to win/draw the fight in many neutral observers opinions) he has proven that he is certainly not 'far from' world champion quality. Actually looking at how those two have progressed since that fight, I'm convinced if the two fought again Bellew would win convincingly. Which of the other world champions at 175lb do you think would beat Bellew? As for the chat, I follow him on twitter and he comes across as a good bloke to me. Guess if his tweeting annoys anyone they just could unfollow? Just a thought.

Craig - I am only going off what I have seen on tv live or highlights so you'll know far more than me.

In comparison to the normal hugging and kissing, price stood out for me in a terrible division. I have watched the klitschkos for years so I look forward to him having a crack when he's ready. Tony has some real class in the uk to contend with from what I can see, but I havent a clue what that division looks like outside the uk. It goes without saying I wish him all the best.

Mark,

I did unfollow him for that very reason. Not that I'm saying he should be bothered or anything.

As for other world champions that would wipe the floor with him... Cloud, Hopkins, Pascal, Bute, Dawson.

You can't just say he is world title quality cos he pushed Nathan Cleverley all the way... Cleverley is a poor poor world champion and their fight was as dull as anything.

Part of Bellew's problem is simply the division he is in, which is marginally more interesting than the Cruiserweight division at present. But more so, he suffers from being in Froch's, and now Kell Brook's shadow within Eddie Hearn's stable.

Craig, my boxing experience is only amateur and nowhere near your kid's level. I have no doubt in my mind that he will be World Champ, as will David Price.

With him being so tall, does he ever struggle with the weight and would he ever consider moving up to cruiser-weight?

Mark @ 829 without rambling on you've pretty much summed it up as id have said it, particularly with the quality of opponent.

Steven @ 848 if you believe that the names you mention would wipe the floor with our kid then you are seriously mistaken and I find your comments quite laughable. If you watch boxing youre watching different fights to me, but as the saying goes only tie will tell.

As for the Cleverley fight if you thought that was dull then again you have lost me unless my Bellew rose tinted have clouded mine and it seems lots of others judgement of that fight. It was far from dull and I had many clev fans sitting beside me who were convinced our kid had actually won that fight.

I will leave you to your opinion but backing it up with something would go a long way to making it sound realistic and plausible would'nt you say !

Martin @ 851 his height has never hindered him when it comes to making weights as he is the consummate pro! He doesn't live like Hatton and others with his weight ballooning in between fights and has only really struggled the once when he was called upon as a last minute replacement and I'm talking within 2- 3 days of the fight going ahead.

Not too sure about moving up to cruiser but that's something our kid would know more than me, but right now his whole emphasis is on conquering his current division.

I do hope beyond hoping that they BOTH as you say become world champs but nothing is a certainty in life so I just take each fight as they come as our kid does and move on from there, but I do have every confidence in him becoming the next light heavy world champ from Liverpool after the great John Conteh and if its done at Goodison all the better!
