Baines makes PFA team of the year

Everton star repeats last season's achievement
Leighton Baines was named in the PFA Team of the Year last night, beating out his England teammate Ashley Cole.

The Everton fullback made the selected XI for the second season running but despite another excellent campaign for the Blues he was not on the shortlist for Player of the Year. Tottenham's Gareth Bale was the winner of that that award this year, picking up the Young Player of the Year gong as well.

Baines is among the favourites to be named Everton's Player of the Year again, though, after a season in which he has been a constant source of goalscoring chances as well as the scorer of seven of the Blues' goals.

and yet the so called experts still say Cole is better.

Baines has had a bit of stick on here over the last few weeks.
Best full back in the league.Bar none

I honestly think we have the best full back pairing in the league.

Steve #561 even as recently as last year Moyes said Cole was better. Obviously using his psychological skills with his man-management expertise to motivate Leighton. To perhaps move on and improve in a better team.

Suarez name mentioned on two occasions.
Loud booing both times.
He is finished in this league, imagine the winding up he will get,he will do something stupid again,he can't resist

Well deserved and great to see him recognised. Top class player. Most assists/chances created from any player in Europe says it all really.

I think Coleman is the best right back in the league as well on current form. Had his first half of the season been as good he would be in there too.

2 quality players

Colossal congrats to Bainesy - one of my favourite Everton players of all time. A well deserved accolade.

The lad wants to play for his country, and everyone can see that the only advantage Cole has over him is more experience of playing in the big matches. That worries me, as it's a solid reason for Baines wanting to move on, so he can play in the Champions League and cement a World Cup starting place. My fingers are well and truly crossed that he decides to stay with us...

The problem is Bainesy plays for Everton and not one of the southern glamour boys teams. While we all know that he is the best full back in England, if not in Europe, he is still regarded insultingly as Cole's 'understudy' both by the media and Hodgson,

The guy is a model of consistency, modesty and quiet brilliance who deserves every accolade that may come his way. I hope he never leaves us.

I can see Baines staying at Everton for the duration. From what I can tell he is a quiet lad and a family man and is happy with his lot. He is making huge amounts of money doing something he loves and has never had to move far away from home to do it. Only possibility is Man Utd and I'm not convinced about that with him approaching 30 now.

Hope to god we keep him. And I see no reason why not. It's just been on TalkSport. Heitinga has been advertising on a Dutch nanny web site and on his twitter, asking for a nanny to look after his kids as he is moving abroad soon. Use the money from him and give Bainesy what he wants to stay.

Bainesy would probably be the first name on that team sheet. No left back has certainly been close to him

Also agree with you James about Coleman, but I personally believe he should have been nominated for the young player of the year - I say that, because Welbeck and Wilshere was nominated in that list, which is absolutely farcical.

That's surely bias on young English players if I have ever seen it? Cannot believe Nastasic wasnt mentioned, and if Wilshere has been there, then by Coleman's form being far better than Wilshere's, he should be too.

I thought Seamus might have been too old but looks like could have just snuck in by a couple of months.

Oh well, he'll just have to win Player of the year next year.

It was the usual suspects in both categories wasn't it. Welbeck and Wilshere the posterboys of the FA. Nastasic should have been in agreed, it's not judged on form though. Michu wasn't in there either which is highly suspect considering the season he had.

In defence of the PFA it's only based on the first half of the season... although that might raise the question of why Fellaini didn't feature. He was still a football darling at Xmas.

Paul - 562 - the reason why Leighton has had stick over the last month or so is that he has been below par. Happens. He's still the best left back in the land and someone who seems so modest and down-to-earth. Lovely guy.

And playing with a strapped up ankle hasn't helped at all.

Made up for him, earned it yet again. Has been off the boil recently, but I think in some ways that is more down to Pienaar if anything. The cross he hit in during the last game that Felli bounced over the bar was absolutely sublime. Its also fair to say that without Cahill, there are not that many players who relish those whipped in crosses in our team. Only Felli stands out as someone able to head a ball decently.

Well done Bainesey!
I see Villa have put 6 past Sunderland. Really brings it home our 1-0 to defeat to them last week!

Expected. Who else could it be.

Please owners. Heed my prayer and boost his salary so he stays.

Amen

Callum #668 "Use the money from him (Heitinga) and give Bainesy what he wants to stay."

Do you really think Baines will have any choice in the matter? It'll be down to BK and how much he can get for Baines that will be the decider.

Pleased for the lad. Well deserved. it's so nice when one of our own makes it into the National headlines.

With that said, If I were him though I'd be out of here. His patience must be wearing thin. I'd say if we don't improve things this off season, he'll be off next summer at the latest and maybe even sooner. His window won't be open for more than 4 more years and there are a hatful of teams in the upper reaches of the CL that he knows he could play for!

I know it's not what people want to hear but

It's not about the money for Baines. It's about challenging for trophies and playing at the highest level. He's 28 now and hasn't got long left at the top. I think he's a loyal bloke and, of course, he's a Scouser, but sometimes people have to be a bit selfish too. It's his life, he has to do what's best for him.

I hope and pray he'll stay, but I wouldn't hold it against him if he left. I'd weep and gnash my teeth, but I wouldn't hold it against him.

Curious about the effect on Baines by his family. It must be discussed, at home, the disparity between his, Cole's, and Evra's salaries.

Congrats to the best left back in Europe!
