'There is a list, but no favourite'

, 29 May, 117comments  |  Jump to most recent
Cornered by the vigilante hawks at Sky Sports, Bill Kenwright was gracious enough to answer their questions about his search for the new Everton manager. He confirmed "There is a list... but no favourite... not at the moment."

Kenwright did confirm that he had talked to Dave Whelan and will be meeting with Roberto Martinez in the next 48 hours. He also described how "Week 1" he had met talked with the internal staff , and "Week 2" with a couple of "lads" who were out of contract.

Watch the video of the interview at the link below. Since then, the Daily Mail is reporting that Kenwright met Martinez at lunchtime today in the lobby of London's Landmark Hotel.

Just watched the Kenwright interview, not a big fan of his due to past goings on at our club but think he handled that well and said the right things.

Was interesting to hear him say he's interviewed a couple of lads out of contract?

Pareira surely one but who else, Biesla?

Finally it's safe to say that it's the media and especially SSN who put the Martinez favourite spin on things.

No more of a favourite than Mackay and Lennon.....oh shit!

I might have to duck and hide here, but... I think Kenwright is getting this spot on so far, and seems to be adopting a very professional almost 'non-football' approach to this apppointment so far.

I wonder who they other candidates on the list are. One other and an internal probably?

Dean Barton 310,

From that interview:

Mr Chairman: "The great thing is fans telling me you didn`t let us down with the last manager"

I thought his bird picked the last manager? She looks like she may be considering the credentials of the baldy geezer in the photo on link? It`s not Steve Kean is it?

Possibly an opening gambit when it comes to the salary and transfer budget Martinez wants?

Mark Tanton

Kevin, he won't be short of offers and has left Wigan on the possibility of an Everton job - I think the possibility was enough for him.

Kevin I understand totally what you are saying but for the first time in a long time the thought, 'You lying bastard' didn't cross my mind when I was watching Kenwright speak.

Did anyone else think the usual drama acting voice had been dropped ?

Watched the video, read the report. He is playing his cards close to his chest. May be he wants Martinez but is coming out with these statements to help negotiate a lower wage. But that is just second guessing te situation.

He also manages to have a dig at the plumbers and electricians who support Everton! Why them I don't know, perhaps they could form a separate group and unite against Kenwright.

Just saw BK interview. Probably he is just keeping the 2 remaining candidates sweet by saying there is no favourite. Martinez is obviously seeming like a clear favourite but am still hoping that Vitor Pereira is on the shortlist.

Have posted some previous comments saying I am a Pereira fan. I wouldn't say that I am a Portuguese football expert but I had heard of him before 2 weeks ago. I knew before that he took over from AVB at Porto 2 years back and was regarded by many as the tactician behind AVBs success. He took over and has taken 2 consecutive titles since, beating no mugs in Benfica.

There are comments about his unpopularity with some Porto fans but I think a large part of that is down to the fact that he has less charisma than an AVB or Mourinho previously. Porto had been a bit spoilt before. Pereira has had to deal with Porto star players being sold, such as Falcao. Am not too bothered that he might be less media friendly than a Mourinho, infact that might be a good thing.

There have been comparisons between the SPL and Portuguese league and yes they may both have mainly been 2 horse races. Now providing a topical analogy rather than an educational one - sometimes maybe there might be a Derby that boils down to a 2 horse race or there may be a 2 horse race in some more average affair. I know given the chance of a horse to own that I'd have the Derby horse!

Dean #326 - appreciate that, many thanks.

Watching that clip I'd say he looks a bit lost, and as if he's been through the mill / drained by it all too. If nothing else I think he realises he's got a monster decision on his hands and he's bricking himself a bit as theres probably no stand out applicant.

He's a bit of a twerp for trotting the 'I picked David Moyes' line though, typical Kenwright showmanship. Well done for keeping it mostly close to his chest though, I bet he was bursting to tell them seeing he is the man in the know.

My bet is he'll pick his man out of RM or VP on Friday but there will be jobs for Neville / Stubbs / Weir in the background.

Brent Stephens

Chris, that was my reading of it - a negotiating ploy in relation to RM's salary.

I think Kenwright has only done his reputation good so far in this process, he's coming across as someone who knows what he's doing - he's dropped the misty eyed Moyes-widow routine and now seems serious about getting this right.

Still time to fuck it up though I guess!

Didn't Kenwright just say it's still a list rather than its down to three candidates like SSN would have us believe?

First week he interviewed internal staff, second week a couple of lads out of contract and third week he's moved on a bit more to the likes of Martinez.

I didn't hear him say he has now narrowed it down to three?

In English, that means he dooesn't have a Scooby what he is doing basically. He has a list, yes, but we don't know who is on that list. It could be Pulis, Lennon for all we know.

Kenwright will still cock up, he's messed up the crest, Desperation Kirkby and he'll cock up the manager.

I hope Periera is on the list, but I know Lennon and an in house is still likely. As for listening to us, phah, I'm not falling for it.

Why are you so set on Martinez?
If it was Bielsa I could understand.

I think that Kenwright has got the support of the backroom staff Ex players stubbs , sheedy etc..........and who ever comes in needs to understand that is the Everton setup. They will most probably be able to bring in the own Assistant as most Managers do.

For Me I think Martinez is going to want to change everthing from top to bottom as he wanted to do at the shite and did at Wigan and I don't think that will fit.
Moyes spent 11 years setting the club after the shambles before him so I can not see Kenwright letting anybody rip it apart.

IMO think Martinez has to big a ego for Everton as we are always told we are a famliy Club the players say it and so does everyone within the club.

I don't think Kenwright will take a chance on signing a Manager with Ego that might think he is bigger than the club.

Listening to us ? I recall a team not a million miles away who pleaded for Dalglish. They were listened to and look what happened. How he can listen to us is beyond me as we all have different favourites. So he gets a few thousand emails with suggestions on it. How on earth can he differentiate between someone who knows the game and someone just messing around after a beer or two ? In the end this is just a frustrating wait and you can bet your last quid that when the new manager is announced, we will form pro and anti groups here on TW and life will return to normal !

Mark (349) - "Sticks in the throat and feels weird doesn't it Sean?! Ah well I'm sure he'll revert to usual Bill sooner or later! For now though, kudos"

I don't know if you've ever seen the film House Of Games?

It's a David Mamet film about con-men and cons (a subject that it seems fascinates the writer/director).

Anyway, it's a very entertaining film in which certain things are explained about con-men.

One of the things we learn is about the word con (short for confidence).

It is explained that it is a misconception that the con man tries to gain your confidence.

It turns out he's called a confidence man because he let's you into HIS confidence.

He appears to tell you everything about himself and want nothing from you.

If he can achieve this, he has you where he wants you.

Added to this is friendliness and openness - you don't put a 'mark' off by being bad-tempered.

And if he can convince you of all thi, you're basically primed.

The story also explains that you can learn the tricks but the GREAT con man is a natural, he's born to it.

In the film we see some fantastic tricks/cons played on people to relieve them of their money, all by people who are 100% plausible.

Of course when they realise what has happened, it's too late.

Just thought it worth mentioning like.

I think the debacle and the fans fury over the new crest has shaken the foundations. They have had an epiphany and realised the fan base can hurt them where it matters. Bad publicity and loss of revenue.

As Chris Keightly pointed out .... Time to appease.

How long will it last though?

BK has a golden opportunity to go some way to win back some kudos by appointing someone who will take us forward and into Europe and I refuse to believe he doesn't want that for EFC. He would certainly want it for his ego.

John # 362 - Mainly because of the last fella's kecks rolling up at the sight of the 'This is Anfield' sign.

I truly believe that the 'Sin Miedo' (without fear) philosophy Martinez promotes is desperately required if we ever want to see silverware again.

We have seen our players drilled to keep things tight, be happy with a draw, but are they playing to their full potential? Will Jelavic suddenly score 15-20 goals next season? Can we go to Old Trafford and roll them over?

Martinez is an intelligent, 'next generation' manager. He will give good value in the transfer market, and apparently lives & breathes the game - no golfing in the week for this guy.

Here is what one of his ex-players recently said about him ;

Meanwhile, Wigan defender Gary Caldwell believes Martinez has the potential to become one of the best managers around.

"He wants to play football the right way and gives players the freedom to do that and gives you great belief in what you are trying to do," Caldwell told Sky Sports News.

"I think tactically he is one of the best I have worked with. I think he showed that in the Cup final playing against a great Man City team, I think tactically he out-thought Mancini on the day and he won that battle, and I think he can do that in most games.

"He thinks about the game, he is very passionate about the game and players respond to him and give him all they've got.

"I think definitely he has got the potential to do that [become a top manager].

"He is a very young manager still and has got a lot of experience behind him, and that can only be good for him and furthering his career."

It may all end in tears - but I would rather see any Everton side go out to win, no matter who the opposition are.

John Jones #362. I agree wholeheartedly and for all the reasons you describe I am convinced that BK will make an internal appointment, despite going through the motions with external candidates. Secondary benefits will be the financial savings along the way and this will definitely appeal to our Bill. I wouldn't mind betting on Neville with Irvine alongside him and a promotion for Duncan to complete the holy trinity.Might not be everyone's idea of an ideal appointment but on the other hand the Everton ethos will be very much intact.

His Record at Wigan :
Played 152 - Won 38 - Lost 71 - Draw - 43 - Points - 157 over 4 seasons

Ex players can say waht ever they want (Rooney Did) doesn't Change his record in the prem.

In 4 season he spent £32 million on players including £5 Million on Ramis ??? £4 Million Habis ??? £6.5 Milllion on Boselli -

Sold £43 Million Including Valencia £16 Million - Moses £9 Million and Zogbia £9 Million

Never finish Above 15th

Moyes for instance Sold £122 Million Spend £122 Million

His record is very very poor Look at WBA for a comparsion same sort of team Spend £6.5 Million since coming back up and have 11th 10th 8th...eh?

Who would you pick, an out of contract manager who's led his team to consecutive titles over Benfica and is out of contract or someone we may have to pay 2m compensation for that has guided his team to relegation and play inconsistent football.

But he was 35 when he took that job, isn't it possible he has learnt from his mistakes? You can be good manager at the wrong club you know. They are a rugby town pretending they like footy.

You would pick the one that interviews best Simon and the one who has the best long term vision for the club. I have given my view on the Martinez v Pereira debate before. Its difficult to compare the merits of two managers based the fact that one has been relegated in England with a small town team whilst one has been manager of one of the biggest clubs in Portugal. Both have their pro's and con's I suppose.

I suppose I am a Martinez fan, not a staunch, blind faith in him fan but a fan. I am not anti Pereira but I am wary for reasons I have stated elsewhere. John Jones seems to suggest that one cross against Martinez is his transfer dealings, I see this a positive though. Boselli was a disaster but Al-Habsi was a success and Ramis, though he suffered a serious injury, isn't a disaster I wouldn't say?

In fairness Ged the job sells itself. I don't think Everton FC have to beg anyone to take the job. It isn't often a manager can walk into a settled squad with money to put his own stamp on it. (there will be money with TV, Heitinga and Felliani) If I were a manager this is a great opportunity.

I wish we would stop looking at Pereira as a possibility. No way is he an option. Its going to be between the likes of Martinez, Lennon, Mackay etc. I don't even think Bilic is an option.Kenright will not take a risk on an overseas based manager. He will want someone who works in the British scene. Its much less of a risk. Last thing Bill wants is to have to fire someone after a few months or a season and pay them compo. It will be a safe bet that may not produce spectatcular results but will at least keep us ticking over that he will go for . I am honestly suprised he doesnt seem to have pursued Mackay. He is a Moyes clone and thats what I thought he would want the most

Ross,

Regarding "the list", wasn't it reported Mancini was quite divisive and uncommunicative with his players? Beside we haven't zillions for him to spend.

Gullit and Vialli, what are they upto these days. Seem to recall Gullit had problems in the dressing room as well.

DiMatteo. Like this guy, did it with Chelski under difficult circumstances (Abramovich) but had the backing of the Players. Try's to play attractive football but is pragmatic as well.

Yeah John. WBA have been playing Moneyball and that big striker on loan was a real golden nugget.

If Martinez has a degree in Business Studies it might worry BK, but The Board are looking for someone who can run the whole show and this might tip the scales in his favour. Weir recommended Jelly and Naismith which rules him out for me.

Kevin #403 is spot by looking at the age of RM, the same as DM when he took over in 2002. Who would we have preferred back then, a 39 year old whose main achievement was losing a play-off final or someone who had just won the FA cup. Personally I don't think there is a stand out candidate, there are some who we wouldn't have near the place (O'Neil, Hughes) while there are others who we know very little about. At least RM knows the EPL, our players and I suspect would be inclined to give our younger players a chance.

My point about Martinez signings wasn't that they were bad I picked a few I thought he over paid. Just this he is great becuase he was manager at Wigan and they are a small club rubbish. McCarthy and McAthur are 2 top Midfielders.

I think that most clubs Outside Utd, Citeh, Spurs , Le Arse , Shite and Chelski are in the Same Boat regarding Money and Wages.

Everton Might be able to attract better Know Players but that doesn't mean that they are a good player. Coleman v Boswanga for instance.

Also Whelan backed his manager with wages because there is no way that 11,000 at home every match could pay for a prem squad.

My Point is I think that Martinez is very Overrated

I actually don't think Martinez would be as gung-ho with us as he was at Wigan.

He must of thought "fuck it, we are favourites for the drop, we may as well go down fighting."

Managing us is a lot more high profile, and his reputation would probably be in shreds if he fucks up. I think he would be a little more cautious, but still play enough attacking football to please the fans.

So Mark Hughes is off to Stoke.

Ah the rewards of failure, wander if their fans will be queuing up outside their gates cheering and waving aka transfer day deadline. A marriage made to suit I think.

I'm glad Hughes is going to Stoke. The most overated man in football, how he got the City job is beyond me, as he is crap.

Ross.
Martinez is just as overrated IMO. His abysmal record bears that out, we are in for a relegation fight next season believe me I saw it in me ma's tea leaves.

Hughes to Stoke - Antifootball, so he and Shawcross will get on fine!

Well, lets hope Martinez freezes and fails his audition with Bill so we can get Periera.

Yeah Dave but he's OUR 'over-rated' gaffer (in a day or two) so that makes him better.

Kevin Tully,

So his reputation will be in tatters if he f***ks up. Yes, and we will be in the playing in the championship.

He has often stated he will not compromise on his attacking philosophy. No fear etc.

I want someone who will kick down the front door yet leave the back one securely locked.

In fairness though John #442 if you are Wigan you are not going to pick up good players and you have to take a punt. Ivan Ramis is of a similar ilk to Heitinga I suppose. Difference is that a Holland International doesn't leave for Wigan but does for Everton. Ramis was linked with good teams and hasn't looked out of place. £4m quid (it was near to 5m euros) is Ok I suppose.

Al-HAbsi is a solid goalkeeper. 3-4m is a decent amount I think

Boselli- Nobody can sugar coat that one, fair play!

Overall I don't think he has done bad with any. Lets be honest Wigan have to look for players on four fronts, lowish transfer, low wages and who are happy playing in the north of England ( an issue for foreign players in comparison with the likes of Fulham, qpr etc.) and play for a small club with small fanbase. For all the financial problems of EFC we pay decent wages and have a reasonable pull with our history and current playing squad

Sky confirmed that Pereira was among those interviewed.

Thought Bill handled the interview well... chuckling about the "plumbers and electricians" who had applied for the job as well.

Good point... his record of picking managers is 1 for 1, and nobody was excited about Moyes when he was hired. So I'm willing to give plenty of slack to whoever he chooses.

This is my worst case scenario. Now bk will start drawing up imaginary fantasy football type lists in his head. I still think he'll end up using his dip, dip, dip method.

Martinez......... well, we could perhaps do better, but also we could do a hell of a lot worst. Touch wood!

Maybe he deserves a chance, at least he does not play hoof-ball, and seems to be man of ideas. I'm as big a fan of DM as they come, but we cant talk a candidate down just for the perception that he may want to make significance changes. changes will have to come in some shape of form, a manager has to cast their personality onto the term and how they play.

Dwelling upon that last sentence, I emphasises, I think there are much worse people on the list than Martinez.

To be fair Martinez left Wigan because he didn't feel he wanted to/could battle out in the Championship (I actually think Wigan could really struggle shorn of their best players), it's not like he's going to starve whether he walks straight into another job or not. £2M a year goes along way in Wigan.

I've just seen pictures of Kenwright leaving the hotel after meeting with Martinez. To me, the look on his face would suggest things did not go according to plan. Meanwhile, Liverpool have agreed a fee for their second signing of the close season.

Curioser and curioser.
BK's under no obligation to RM just because he walked away from Wigan.
From what I understand, no promises have been made - only a request to speak to him - and RM left Wigan for his own reasons.
Perhaps somebody's been putting 1 and 1 together and getting 3.
Whelan still seems to be acting like RM's pimp - "tailor made for Everton"; "BK's very honest" and further blowing smoke.
A change of tune from us not being a big enough club for RM barely a fortnight ago.

Just posted this on Martinez to leave Wigan thread, but that seems to have turned into blind date!

I was under the impression that Martinez had actually resigned - presumptions, presumptions!! Not sure if anyone else is in the same boat but just seen a BBC article:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2332687/Roberto-Martinez-meets-Everton-chairman-Bill-Kenwright-London-talks-Goodison-Park-move.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

Part of it states:

Whelan told BBC Radio 5 live on Tuesday afternoon: "Roberto has resigned. We are going to release him." However Wigan later released a statement saying Martinez remained their manager but had been given permission to talk to another club.

So maybe BK right with no favourite yet!

Mark but it IS also reported that DM is still technically the Wigan Manager I assume until someone pays the ransom - sorry the compensation for him.

Terence I'm really not interested in who the other lot buy or don't buy, EFC are the only team I care about. I don't even like baseball so the news that they are worried about whether or not they are subsidising the PL club is mildly amusing. But to be fair to you I understand what you mean other clubs are up and running and we have to wait before we can do any deals. Although I thought the window didn't open until July 1st.

Dennis Stevens

Apparently that's correct, Terence. Martinez was doing fine until he caught sight of the new badge & pointed out that wearing it would make a laughing stock of the club.

Please, please, please will people stop mentioning Pulis and O'Neill! It's putting the shits up me. I'm going on my holidays for two weeks next week and if either of them two get it (thankfully Hughes has gone) I want to be here for the riot. So the missus might have to go on her own.

Negative managers will easily transfer negative thoughts to our players in key games. We can't go for a manager with a piss-poor record in the Premier League, who has just seen his boys finally go down.

If we appoint Martinez, then expect the kind of horror shows we saw playing in Europe against teams from Portugal, which were seen by millions on live TV... Jeez, never, ever again, please God!

Be brave for once, Bill & back a manager with a winning mentality, a thinker, a talker, a planner, a grafter, a fucking winner! Welcome to Goodison a man with real fight,to get this club back in the hunt for some fucking silverware at long last. The Porto fella will do us fine & won't cost us £2 million either – job done!

Just spotted Howard Kendall and John Bailey deep in conversation with a luvvy type of Coronation Street bit part actor with white hair looking at a list and furiously crossing out names and mentioning "How much compensation?" Maybe it will be the 4th coming of the messiah, either that or this real ale is starting to make me hallucinate!
Saying that though I would prefer them to some of the names getting linked over the past few weeks: Pulis, Redknapp, O'Neill.

I have full faith in our beloved chairman to find the right man — he must have found a little bit of time in his 24 / 7 search for investors to do the interviewing!

Up The Toffee's!

Deep down we ALL know that Kenwright is going to fuck this up...BIG TIME !!

Saw this buffoon on SSN last night going on about a list....I'd love to know who all these Evertonians are that he keeps saying he speaks too...90% of whom are telling him to go with his gut instinct about the new manager because he made such a great choice last time...are these the same imaginary Evertonians he and Elstone spoke to about the new badge...If that's the case the hello Dream Team

I can just see it now...SSN Press Conference on Friday...Bullshit Billy to the onlooking journo's..."I've appointed Phil/Stubbsey/Weiry & Big Dunc because in my gut it just felt right so I went with it...after all that's what 90% of Evertonians told me to do...go with my gut instinct..." FUCK OFF YOU LYING BASTARD...90% MY ARSE !!

I just do not trust this simpleton one bit and I just know he's going to fuck this up !!

Laudrup but that ain't going to happen.....Don't mind Martinez but not my 1st Choice but DEFINATELY NOT anyone from within the current backroom staff !!

but we just know it WILL be....

I think I'm the only person who wouldn't have Laudrup given. I would honestly rather have Stubbs.

That said, I'd have Martinez or Periera over all of them.

Rather have Stubbs.... based on what exactly ????
Phil Sammon
111 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:22:25
Firstly, I don't like the way he talks about his club. Not only does he regularly talk of them as a 'small club' but he also makes no secret of his desire to move on in the next year or so.

Secondly, I don't think he's done such a 'great' job at Swansea. They played well at times and rolled over at others.

Not to mention a £10million payment and the fact that he doesn't want to come to us.

Nelly Verdonghan
112 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:28:15
so you don't want Stubbs then ??
Colin Glassar
113 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:28:31
It's not over till its over. I still think Martinez will be chosen over pereira due to his experience and knowledge of the prem.
Nelly Verdonghan
114 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:29:42
Do you think Moyes did a great job at Everton then ??? I only ask because under him Everton played well 'at times and rolled over at others'...
Nelly Verdonghan
115 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:32:15
Can't really comment on Pereira as I'd never really heard of him until his name popped up as a possible new manager
Steve Bell
116 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:17:55
Not convinced by Laudrup, flavour of the month. Not convinced either by winning FA or league cups. Clubs outside the sky favourites tend to expend all their energy on cup runs to the detriment of league form.

In fact it could be argued the sky favourites could not care less any more about the FA cup or league cup. They concentrate on qualifying for the champions league.

Aka Wigan and Swansea. If Wigan had not been sidetracked by the FA cup would they have survived the drop? Like wise if Swansea had concentrated on league form would they have achieved a higher league position. Swansea's form did take a dive after winning the league cup (or whatever it's called this year).

How a team performs over the league season is my measurement or yardstick.

The choice is not straightforward so BK is on a hiding to nothing whomever he picks.
Just get it right, so no pressure there then, eh Bill.

Nelly Verdonghan
117 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:39:36
Well the sky favourites may turn their attentions back to the FA & League cups as from 2015....both gain entry to Europa League which in turn could lead to Champs League qualification
Patrick Murphy
118 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:42:51
I don't think the Sky Favourites have lost interest in the domestic cup competitions as usually one of them ends up in the Final. But I don't like the idea of the winners of Europa League gaining access to CL as it means the richer teams have more than one bite of the cherry.
Nelly Verdonghan
119 Posted 30/05/2013 at 19:51:44
When it comes in then there should be no drop outs from the Champs league allowed in after they've been knocked out of main competition
