Roberto Martinez says that Darron Gibson has a chance of playing a part in the season opener at Norwich on Saturday but the club will monitor his progress over the next couple of days.

The midfielder strained his knee during the warm-up before Sunday's friendly with Real Betis but was unable to run the injury off and was substituted just before half time.

"He is going to be touch-and-go for Saturday," the manager told evertonfc.com.

"He has got a little bit of a strain in his right knee. It's something he picked up in the warm-up and he tried to run it off and get through the game but he couldn't.

"Knowing Darron, maybe he has got a chance for Saturday but it's a little bit of a concern because he will need treatment and we'll see how that knee reacts over the next 48 to 72 hours."

Describing Gibson as a "special footballer" who is "ready to take a big role at Everton", Martinez is keen for the Irishman to be involved in what will be his first competitive match in charge of the Blues.
