Deulofeu creates early dilemma for Martinez

Roberto Martinez admits that Gerard Deulofeu's early form has shown that the young Spaniard could be ready for regular first-team action earlier than he had expected.

Martinez had suggested prior to the recent game against Stevenage that the 19 year-old would need time to settle into life in England and that he didn't expect Deulofeu to play a significant role in the senior side until the New Year.

His goalscoring debut in the League Cup, a brief cameo at the end of the goalless draw against Cardiff – where he arguably provided more goal threat in six minutes than the team had done in the previous 84 – combined with his application and progress in training, has led Martinez to hint that he is looking at bringing the Barcelona loanee on faster than originally planned.

"He is a player we could see more of in the coming weeks," the manager told evertonfc.com.

"Gerard is a player with great application in his work and already you can see that he is growing into a phenomenal footballer. He is only 19 and he is relying on his natural talent.

"Coming from Spain and a specific way of playing at Barcelona, it is going to take time to adapt, and he is doing that quicker than I expected.

"In the League Cup he showed he is someone who can create something from nothing," Martinez continued.

"When you can do that it gives you an extra edge in the final third which is going to be very important in the Premier League campaign over the coming weeks and months.

"Clearly he is well ahead of where I expected him to be at this stage."
