Barkley settling into England camp

Ross Barkley is drinking in the experience of being in England's senior setup following what he admits was a surprise call-up but admits that his priorities lie with Everton.

The 19-year-old has become a regular in the Blues' first team this season, featuring in all 11 Premier League games so far under Roberto Martinez, and his early-season impact prompted Roy Hodgson to hand him his first cap in the World Cup qualifier against Moldova in September.

The midfielder is in Hodgson's squad for the upcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany and while he will have high hopes of more playing time in those games as the manager assesses his options for next summer's World Cup Finals, Barkley is looking to use his club form to push for a place in that squad for Brazil.

"It's every youngster's dream to play in the World Cup," he told evertontv. "But I'm not really thinking about it at the moment — hopefully if I play well for Everton then I will push into that team and get to Brazil.

He credits Martinez for his continuing rise to prominence at Goodison this season, saying: "He's given me a lot of freedom, he believes in me, wants me to be an all-rounder and has spoken to me a lot."

In the meantime, the youngster is enjoying learning from mixing with the senior players in the England camp and gaining vital experience for his development.

"It was a nice surprise to be selected in September's squad. It just shows that hard work pays off. The first two days I'd say there were a lot of nerves but then it settled because it felt like I was meant to be there.

"It's helpful being around different players that I'm not used to — being around big-name players — it's good just talking to them and seeing the way they approach games. It bodes well for future games for me.

"It was unfortunate I just missed out on a goal but it's always good playing for your country.

"To come on for the seniors was a great feeling and a good moment for my family as well."
