Classy James McCarthy the unsung hero as Everton show they have midfield to match Arsenal

Ex-Gunner Alan Smith waxes lyrical about James McCarthy after another imperious midfield display by the young Irish international as Everton matched Arsenal in the 1-1 draw at the Emirates.
Up until last week, Arsenal could claim to boast the best midfield in the Premier League... Now, however, they have a rival. A serious rival. Having totally overwhelmed Manchester United's midfield last Wednesday, Everton came to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and achieved something similar, at least in the first half.

Gareth Barry, James McCarthy, Steven Pienaar, Kevin Mirallas and the dynamic Ross Barkley might boast different qualities to Arsenal's prized collection but it dovetailed beautifully to leave their opposite numbers floundering at times.

Of the men on show, Barkley inevitably catches the eye with his dynamic play. But another young man consistently excelling this season enjoyed another good day at the base of midfield. McCarthy's maturity, his understanding of the role, shone through as Everton moved through the gears.
