Neck on Block

Written in advance of any outcome at Wembley this afternoon, I do so because irrespective of the result my mind is made up.

I've no wish to detract from the unequivocal, unqualified support the Blues will be afforded today. I've been, as a matter of record and much consternation and criticism from fellow fans, totally opposed to Martinez since the outset.

I'm not clairvoyant and my initial reservations were built upon watching Wigan who at times played like Brazil in attack... my previous mantra included 'like Hartlepool' in defence, sadly that's been overtaken by 'like Everton'.

It was glaringly obvious this guy had limitations and relegation cemented that opinion. Cup games are a lottery, so assessments based on such games are less reliable. Please somebody explain our Quarter-final display which bore little resemblance to approach, attitude and tactics applied ever in a Premier League match in the past two seasons by the same Boss and team (give or take, granted)... It is difficult to accredit Martinez with any kind of title frankly.

I've no wish to be like any other Club in the sense of chopping and changing and rushing to get rid. I found fault with Moyes, who has many limitations, but he was unarguably a safe pair of hands, dull as... but secure.

The recklessness of Martinez is nothing to be pleased with or proud of. It's further compounded by the pre- and post-match offerings to the media and, more importantly, US, the fans! That's the hardest pill to swallow, the absolute piffle this guy has the audacity to afford. It's embarrassing and frankly insulting.

It's difficult to assess the squad in reality; I'm inclined to agree with many fans and not a few pundits too that they are collectively impressive in terms of potential. They've failed to deliver, which is majorly down to Martinez – the anomaly being Lukaku as an item on the balance sheet.

He's delivered the goals in exchange for the fee, but pronouncements confirming his mercenary approach to what and where next are a real minus. His performance witnessed first hand at Crystal Palace should have confined him to the bench thereafter, a page ad in the Echo saying "I don't care anymore" could not have made it any clearer.

Martinez's reign has been exemplified by his inability to bite the bullet with any player's loss of form, Howard as the prime example... but there are a fair few more. Then he bigs the player up, causing astonishment and eventually annoyance amongst fans.

I want us to win today; I'd like us to win the Cup too, but I'm really concerned the inert one who still exerts massive influence at Board level, Kenwright, will see that as the perfect riposte and will inflict him upon us for what might prove to be a relegation battle next season. The last guy I'd want in a tight spot... Roberto Martinez.

I gather Bill Kenwright has been unwell, might explain the blind spot when scrutinising Martinez's CV three years ago! If he ducks this issue like he's done so many times with other issues (think ground development etc), then my nostalgia and affection for him are dead and buried.

No other Club would have allowed Martinez to continue; Wednesday wasn't the worst – it was preceded by so much crap previously that, however bad, it shouldn't have been happening because Martinez should have been already long gone. How he can be in charge today defies credulity...

Frankly, Farhad Moshiri's judgement has a giant question mark hanging over it now. He must feel he can't stand on Kenwright's toes just yet. Martinez, irrespective of the FA Cup goings on, has to go and that's a perfectly reasoned and reasonable assessment. COYB irrespective!

Hard to find fault with any of that. It can't go on. Over to you Mr Moshiri.

Well said Ray, I agree with all you said, Martinez regardless of us winning the cup this season has shown his failings, time to go.

I was underwhelmed when he was appointed but prepared to give him a chance. Even before his first game in charge I remember posting on here that he would need to 'mix it up' to progress on the pitch.

The first season was a very pleasant surprise.
Remember the Christmas video from the club?
How things have changed since then.

I made my mind up that he was not the man for the job in January 2015 on the back of a poor first half to the season right up to the WBA match. That night I posted that his time was up and have remained consistent on this since.

He has subsequently gone from bad to worse.

I am not subject to knee-jerk reactions.
An FA Cup win won't change my opinion.

I would not rush to judge Moshiri just yet.
(Perhaps he is still recovering from a behind-the-scenes look at how EFC has been run - its ambition, vision, strategy, tactics, operations - and is still trying to regain his speech.)

We'll see what Moshiri is made of after today. If he dallies, it will mean he's bought into Kenwright's bullshit. If he acts he's the man we've been looking for !

Sad to say, my money is on the former !

A good piece on Sky Sports News earlier and they summed up the present mood and situation within our club quite well. A couple of telling things were that Barkley looks lost at the moment when he should be starting for England and the players look like they have lost faith in Martinez.

They finished on Bill on how he needs to step aside and let a new manager be installed this summer. Giving RM money to spend this summer and letting him continue would just be wasted time.

Great piece Ray. Can't argue with any of it.

Phil, stop being a killjoy, Bobby will NOT be here for the new season.

Keep the faith.

Some may totally disagree with my decision but...........I will not watch another game while Martinez is in charge, and I will not buy a season ticket either, while he's in charge. If we moan and moan on ToffeeWeb but do nothing then nothing will change.

I realize it would take more than me to not buy a season ticket on the grounds I've mentioned, to make a difference, but imagine if everybody who voted negatively in the Martinez poll on here recently did the same.

Over 10,000 people who refused to buy a season ticket until he was fired.....

A different perspective on Moshiri's inaction (as far as we know) could be that major decisions – like sacking the manager at a Premier League club – are usually a board level decision... unless it's a single owner like Abramovich.

The board at present is made up of Kenwright, Woods, Elstone and Moshiri's rep. The next elections to the board may lead to an expanded/changed set of directors with Moshiri's nominations making up the majority of the new board and we may then see major changes in management (if it doesn't happen before then), in direction of the strategy and ground moves/improvement. That's just my reading of the situation with no inside information known to me.

If Moshiri is the real deal and I genuinely hope he is, then come the first game of next season we will be in party mood. If not, it means he is a fan of Martinez and not the saviour we so desperately need. Over to you Mr Moshiri – please see sense and move this joker on.

Excellent piece. I just wonder if things are happening behind closed doors and that Martinez is just marking time until the end of the season.

Perfectly valid article , Ray - it took me till 15 months ago to see through the hype, but even in his first season I was annoyed by the League Cup capitulation when a cup run would have done us a world of good - and posted accordingly.

Sitting down to watch the match shortly - in hope rather than expectation - win or lose he must go - though sadly it looks like the end of the season now at the earliest. My biggest concern is that a cup win keeps the clown in for next season. I do hope the new owner and board have the bottle to allow Roberto his ill-deserved time in the Sun but dispense with his league services thereafter.

It's a dreadful dilemma, but if the fan base actually knew 100% that a cup win would mean us saddled with the phenomenal one for another season - how many of us would take the hit today?

Anyway - as we don't have such a clear cause and effect here - here's to the lads doing the club proud! COYBs Let's stuff the mancs!

I read your piece, Ray and must say, I happen to think Martinez done pretty well in the first season. What came after is perhaps a mixtur of some good football, some poor football, some bad injuries and some terrible decisions by Martinez.

The tipping point for me, though, was his response publicly to Leighton's view that there was no chemistry in the team. I thought Roiberto Martinez was absolutely bang out of order and on top of that would have destroyed whatever morale the team had left.

My view is that Kenwright should have stood him down immediately after the Derby match and to have put Joe Royle in charge, with Unsy and Kev Sheedy (and maybe bring Peter Reid in as well. And let Joe see the season out.

I think Mr Moshiri is not likely to rush into decisions now or any time soon but I think Martinez will be gone at or before the season end.. I think he will see what managers are available and will have already been seeking a second opinion on who would be the best candidate.

About Mr Moshiri and his perceived inaction. Well, I don't see him forking out £80 odd million to let Kenwright fuck about playing Chairman. My guess is that Mr Moshiri was looking for a smooth handover and the time to bring his own plans to fruition.

After Bobby's ill thought out response to Bainsey, it's like plug being pulled from any team spirit we could have counted on. I thin k it was fairly low already; but was the point of no return for me...and I think for Martinez as well.

We'll have to wait and see though. I've got me shirt, cap and scarf on and am sitting in the parlour waitng and hoping for the lads to do a proper job of work today.

Get stuck in Blues.

Yes although not directly related to the sbject post, the response of Roberto to Baines' chemistry comment sealed his fate. Amazing how highly intelligent, focused, skilled senior people are always undone by "ego"

In fact Roberto could have used Baines' remark to his own advantage as well as the squad overall, but because primarily it was true, he chose the defensive, arrogant option and yes, he is toast, albeit not quite as soon as we would wish.

Talking of Lukaku, wasn't his last game for Chelsea an important penalty miss?

If Moshiri is the real deal and is here for a long future. First, he addresses the management issue, then the ground issueand finally he sorts out who's staying and who's going. It's a rationalisation. Possibly Lukaku believes he's better than us and we have to take the money. He's the worst penalty-taker we've ever had and Baines, Barkley or even Hibbitt would be a better bet at this role, but that's incidental and not the point of this contribution.
Martinez goes, someone comes in : Howe? I'm open to suggestions. Then the ground issue has to be faced. We can't go on in the ground where I've stood in a crowd of 75,000, but which is now woefully inadequate, oth in terms of view and in terms of revenue. Spurs whose ground makes millions more than us have bitten the bullet, we haven't and we must.
The result today was cruel, but is the result of our poor finishing and lack of incisive quality in the final quarter. Deulofeu is a gamble, but he's a talent, like Barklet and Lukaku. He needs nurturing and he needs cherishing. Lennon works harder and is talented, but the Catalan is special.

I reckon Moshiri will sit back and wait for the end of the season before sacking Martinez and hopefully spend the time looking for a manager who can take the team forward and actually understands modern football tactics.

Lukaku has gone backwards based on today's performance but considering how little of the ball he has seen over the past couple of months it is not surpring really. Barkley too has gone backwards, he lacks confidence and really needs a coach to help him rebuild it whilse educating him on some of his decision making.

I thought Stones had very strong performance today and his hoof across the field to try and clear the lines was a pointer to the fact that he has learnt some of the lessons related to the mistakes he has made this season. Most importantly of all though was the way in which he started to lead the charge on more than one occasion in the second half. I know some don't like him but I can see the development of a future captain if he can just get a decent coach to guide him.

While I hope Martinez is gone Monday lunchtime, I will be just as happy if he goes the day after the final game of the season. But he must go.

Jim (21),

Agree completely. Anyone expecting a managerial change at this stage is not going to get it. After all what could a new manager realistically do in a few games before the end of the season?p>Lukaku had a poor game, his tally over the year has been good but once again our problem is lack of options. What the hell was Niasse signed for mid season if he isn't fit enough to play?

Barkley really concerns me. He has talent, he really does, but he dosent tackle well and struggles to impose himself in a game, both major failings. Can he overcome them? well that is down to the coaching perhaps. Martinez has shown no signs over the last couple of years that he will be the one to improve him.

Stones is a great player. Anyone who dosen't rate him because he has the odd bad game quite frankly dosen't know ability when they see it.

Everyone in our team looks bad at times under Martinez's lack of direction. The performance today, welcome as it was, was still unbelievably disorganised. It was more a case of players fighting hard than any tactical genius from Martinez. I don't say that in a churlish way; perhaps Martinez fired the guys up at half time, but the team is not even close to being as good as Martinez thinks in his mind.

He said again tonight that he thinks the team is improving year on year. Where is the evidence to support that? The mind boggles, it really does.

Phil, my money is with yours, Kenwright will not sack him. He is deluded. Most rationale people think that one or two poor games is just a blip and nothing to worry about. Kenwright seems to think that one or two poor seasons is just a blip. This is scary.

After a gutsy performance (second half) yesterday engineered more by the brilliant support of fans I still remain with the exact same view about Mr Martinez and the very points made by Ray are spot on and made in a balanced manner. Surely the Board must act quickly to give a new manager time to buy in players needed, particularly a leader in midfield and I would argue in defence, and time for a new manager to help shake off the failed philosophy of keeping the ball whilst failing to generate any momentum and pressure on any teams at home. I am sick to death of our style of football as well as the fact that this year has been our worst ever home record.

I was never keen on his appointment, but he was Everton manager and as such, I was prepared to give him every chance. Sadly he has proved to not be up to the task. If the club do not act fast I can see us doing a Villa next season.

While there are clearly players who want away, I think every effort should be made to keep Stones... I would take a decent offer for Rom. I see in Barkley a developing talent who, when reaching physical maturity, may yet prove to be as good as we all hoped.

For now, we need a steadying hand on the tiller. Allardyce??? Not everyone's cup of tea, but someone who is straight talking and will not take any crap from "stars" who are not as good as they think.
