Ospina open to the idea of Everton switch

Reported Everton target David Ospina says that a move to Goodison would be a "great possibility" but insists he his settled at Arsenal.

The Colombian international has been linked with the Blues over the last week or so following the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea who would be the presumptive first-choice goalkeeper at the Emirates.

That would move Ospina into a second-string role despite an impressive season with the Gunners in 2014-15 and some inspirational performances in the Copa America this summer.

Ospina was asked by AS Colombia about the prospect of joining Everton, one of a few options he has available to him if speculation is correct, and while he would be interested, he admits he really wants to stay at Arsenal.

"[Everton] are a very competitive team, which showed significant things during last season.

"With a good manager and they play good football; it is a team to take into account and a great possibility.

“There are some possibilities, but my mind is at Arsenal. I want to go there. “I and my family are very happy in London so I hope to respect the contract, which has four years left on it.”

Respect the contract... where have I heard that before.? I'm sure he will be there for next season but will eventually get pissed with only playing Carling Cup matches. He's a good 'keeper and would be a welcome addition. However, I think we're stuck with Howard for at least another season.

Martinez does not see replacing the 'keeper as a priority and with the limited funds we have I'd rather the cash go on a decent centre back and a classy No 10.

Singh Saab – I just had to comment to applaud your name. Now that is a name to have! I hope you're living up to it. I mean no disrespect of course.

And yes, I agree – from the looks of it, we'll be continuing with the same goalkeeping options of last season. Let's just pray that both Howard

Doesn't exactly sound like a outright plea to sign for Everton so I'm not sure this is really even worthy of the headlines it's getting.

Incidentally Ogbonna has officially signed for West Ham; he could have been a really useful acquisition for us, a big powerful guy perhaps in a similar mould to Distin or Lescott.

I'm still not sure where we are going to get this central defender or creative midfielder though, and let's not forget we need a centre-forward. If anyone doubts we need a striker, just look at the amount of games we fired blanks in after Christmas.

Not going to happen unless Howard goes.

Please be true. Getting that clown Howard out would be the best piece of business for years.

Just the usual covering your ass.... keep the fans where you're at on board without closing the door to going somewhere else. We can't expect him to say much else.

James,

The thought of Howard being last line of defence is again a scary one isn't it? Some of his antics last summer were bizarre to say the least, rushing out laying on the ball outside the box at Sunderland still has me shaking my head in disbelief, too many to mention with the fella!

Sadly though it's highly unlikely Martinez will see these faults and potential game-changing antics and we''ll be stuck questioning more of the same next season.

It is, Jim. It would save us considerable points over the course of a season I have no doubt.

I have never rated him and it was the moment he fell on the ball with his chest that really irritated me. The arrogance of the man, there was no need to do it other than to create drama and make himself the centre of attention.

As I said before, getting him out would be our best piece of business done for years.

James, we could pick a whole compilation of Howard madness and make a DVD on it; it would make for entertainment for neutrals to have a good laugh.

I have never totally forgotten Howard's limp wrist in the 2009 Cup Final from a relatively tame Lampard shot which proved the winner.

I'd love us to sign Ospina just to see a bit more of his missus.

Knowing how much Martinez favours Howard, it's unlikely. But I think a new keeper is essential and Tim has passed his sell-by date. Ospina would be a brilliant signing.

Ospina could happen. Our link with Ogbonna was clearly to force hammers to fork out - the same way that Dann link was to earn him a bumper new contract.

I believe the Shaqiri to stoke leak was to alert better clubs to his availability - we should be in there, though I can't see it happening!

Colin always brings humour to the table! I love it lol. We definitely need to move Tim Howard on. I was a fan of his in his first few years but he has been a liability in the last 3 or 4 years and some of the mistakes have been calamitous. Anyone remember the Kenwyn Jones header at The Britain in that he dived half a hour late for when he should have saved it comfortably? Haven't seen much of Ospina. Any good anyone?

He's not interested. His glamourous missus probably loves London.

Geoffrey

I recall that Kenwyn Jones header at the Britannia, it was December 2012 was it not?

One of my biggest gripes also with Howard is why does he so often end up behind the goal-line before the ball has even crossed it?

Search a few season review DVDs from recent season's to get a gist of what I mean. He resembles a house spider captured in a box, flippin all arms and legs flailing everywhere but no real coordination of where he is.

He says that he and his family want to stay in London and he wants to fight for his place... so, unless Arsene Wenger tells him he isn't needed, I think this is unlikely.

I agree, Jim. The alternative to signing a replacement in the short term would be to give Robles a chance. He did well when he had that run of about 5 games. Martinez signed him so he must think he is good enough!

London again the factor for a lot of the foreign players. The Shaqiri thing was always just a publication of his market value. He'll want Champions League football, and will probably end up in Germany.

Why would he leave Arsenal because he'll be the Number 2 keeper, only to be the Number 2 with us?

Won't happen until the Human Starfish leaves. And I can't see that happening anytime soon.

She's obviously never been to Primark on Church Street then, Harold. Take her for a stroll down Castle Street and she'll fall in love with the place.

Robles needs an opportunity and if he has a stinker of a season then so what? He can't be any worse than that calamitous American buffoon.

I would welcome the signing of Ospina but, unless he is first choice here, I cannot see it happening and it looks like Howard is first choice again this season so it's a no-go for me.

Harold, what about the glamourous Coleen and all her glamourous mates that she could be hobnobbing with on Scotty Road.

I recently watched Ospina in the Copa de Americas against Argentina and even though Colombia lost on pens I kid you not that particular night Ospina was nothing short of sensational! Saved everything Argentina could throw at them including Messi at his sublime best!

I really hope we sign this guy!

The team lacks spine. We need a commanding keeper, commanding centre back and a commanding playmaker who shoots, scores, demands and uses the ball.

Seems that Martinez thinks Howard is good enough so this is a non-starter.

Hope he can abandon caution and find a centre back and playmaker he hasn't managed yet.

Loans at the end of August is my prediction.

One bad season does not a bad goalkeeper make.

I find it amazing when you look at his stats season on season, then he has one bad one and everyone comes out with all the same old "get rid" stuff.

People have very short memories of the dark days of our glut of shit keepers post-Big Nev.

Colin Metcalfe: "I recently watched Ospina in the Copa de Americas against Argentina and even though Colombia lost on pens I kid you not that particular night Ospina was nothing short of sensational! Saved everything Argentina could throw at them including Messi at his sublime best!"

Did you also happen to watch a certain Tim Howard during the World Cup last year? Every dog has his day, and every keeper has his off-day. It's massively highlighted when a goalkeeper struggles, and Tim Howard has been easily the best keeper we've had since Martyn, and before him, Southall.

I'm not directly comparing Howard to Southall by the way, there isn't a keeper dead or alive that compares to Big Nev in my humble opinion.

I would like to get this guy in as he's pretty good and I think it's time for Howard to go. He's been a great servent to us but we can't afford to be sentimental about it as it will cost us points like last season.

Wonder if Ospina will be going to Stoke? Especially if they can get him for less than what they sold Begovic for.

Stoke have Butland and Given.

I don't think they need Ospina.
