Everton hopeful over work permit for Funes Mori

, 24 August, 85comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton are banking on Ramiro Funes Mori qualifying for a work permit to play in England as an "exceptional talent", the final step before he can be unveiled as the Blues' latest signing.

The Argentine defender was flown over to attend yesterday's match against Manchester City before putting pen to paper on his Everton contract but is waiting on clearance from the UK's Department of Employment.

Funes Mori won't qualify through the DoE's normal threshold of having played 75% of this country's internationals over the past year – he has just one cap to his name so far – and The Mirror are claiming that his application for an EU passport was rejected.

Everton are hopeful that the 24-year-old's efforts in River Plate's recent trophy-winning season will be enough for him to qualify so that they can wrap up the £5.5m deal this week.

Mori deal now in the balance. Work permit issues.

How can a Premier League club in 2015 conduct their business like Everton do?

It’s absolutely pathetic.

Mori work permit issues. Wow, never saw that coming!! A week earlier than usual, but there's that one ticked off.

I’m actually really surprised that the Mori deal hadn’t taken the work permit into account already. As much as the club is useless in transfers, they’ve been pretty diligent in the past in terms of getting permits done before entering into deals.

Both Fernando (now at Man City) and Ever Banega had permits approved, even though we couldn’t agree to sign them. You would of thought they would of had something in place before flying him over.

Don’t you think that the negotiating team would have checked for eligibility for a work permit before they agreed a fee, instead of hoping that he can qualify?

I'll be surprised if we get the permit... As I keep saying... Evans, Lennon and maybe some gash loan. Without some decent signings like Yarmolenko or that type, we will be mid table... simple. Let’s hope we all get what we want; I’m not confident though.

This transfer window is the comedy farce that just keeps on giving... I’ve been disappointed, frustrated, angry, sad...

This should have been done weeks ago!!! Some crazy transfer policy going on this year!!! Mori,

Some striker Leandro??? No Premier League experience or even a high standard of football been played??? >{?And the Yarmelenko thing is crazy!!! This so called marquee signing just seems to be some sort of smokescreen for something!!! I hope I am wrong but I can see us being left disappointed and with egg on our faces when the window closes and then excuses like "we need the right character for our club".

Like I said, I hope I am wrong but so far it all seems a bit fishy????

This player was not in Martinez original target list.

By leaving everything until the last few days he is now probably our fifth or sixth choice. This is wholly down to leaving the transfer business until it is too late.

managers everywhere put their list of targets to the board at least a month before the transfer window opens.Other clubs did some business before their pre season games so that they could get the new players training with their new team mates. This is the best way to introduce a new player.

We are alone in leaving everything until the last few days and the only clubs who can afford to act in the same way are the mega rich clubs who already have strong enough squads.

The fact is we now have no experienced left back on the books. Oviedo seems to be unfit otherwise he would surely have been on the bench against City. We still do not have centre back cover unless Mori gets a permit. We still do not have the big signing of a top class number 10 which we have been crying out for.

I am totally dismayed at the bunglings of the board. Both Moyes and Martinez have been away on tours with the players and the men who are supposed to be closing the deals have failed the managers.

I honestly do not believe that any of the players we are presently linked with apart from possibly Yarmolenko were among the original targets.

How is it possible to justify leaving transfer business this late ?

A complete risk signing a player from South America, how many "actually" make the grade in the Premiership that haven’t previously played in Europe – not many I guess?

Looks like a complete farce with the work permit, and the same will surely happen with the other South American we are "poised" to sign.

We’d be better served going back for Lescott, he can cover left back and centrally and has the all important Premier League experience.

We'll probably bring in a marquee signing to please the fans but I'm not sure Martinez wants one, especially after the Eto'o business.

It doesn’t just happen at Everton -- it happens at Arsenal too with signing players who can’t get work permits. Difference is that Arsenal also buy $40 million players who are elgible to play as well as those that aren’t.
Sam Hoare

Lescott would be a safe, regressive move. I'd rather we try and sign people who could become superstars than aged journeymen who will do a 'solid' job.

Mori might need some time to settle but could be brilliant for a relatively cheap price. If he doesn't work out I reckon we'll be able to shift him on to a Spanish club for a few mill anyway...

The FA tightened up the rules for work permits to stop young British players having their development blocked by average foreign players. Looking at this logically you would struggle to justify the argument that he is an exceptional talent.

If you are going to take a flyer and argue the work permit issue on such a case then sensibly you have to do it much earlier in the window to give yourself room if the appeal gets rejected.

As for the Uruguayan striker I still can't believe that isn't a wind up. The league is rated 35 in the world, Scottish Premier is 21 and Tunisia and Bolivia are ahead of Uruguay! So its a massive jump and yet the guy doesn't even score 1 in 3. If it was his first season and he was banging goals in for fun, then maybe it would be worth taking a chance.

""Exceptional talent"? I'd like to know if there are any examples of work permits given based on this? I'm sure there must be or our transfer team are a disgrace for not checking this out before proceeding."

Arsenal had to go down this route in the last transfer window in order to secure a work permit for Gabriel Paulista, as he had never been capped by Brazil in any age group. Various things factor into it, such as age, transfer fee, length of contract and how likely said player is to make a positive contribution to the league he's looking to play in.

Arsenal obviously succeeded but, as John Crawley mentioned, the FA have since proposed constraints that they hope will help cut the number of non EU passport holders in the British game by up to fifty percent.

Well. If you want to help out the young British talents and make the leagues more even you need to take away the loaning system. I think that system is restraining game time for talents, decreasing possibillities for smaller clubs to both build teams and make good money for their efforts to develop young players and finally I beleive this is keeping the top clubs at the top.

Andrew (26) it’s because Chelsea buy them, but don’t play them. They get shipped out to Holland and Spain, where they can get EU passports in about 2 years. That’s why Chelsea have all these partnerships to get round the rules. To be fair, we did it a few years back with Anderson Silva, but unfortunately he was rubbish.

Personally, I’m rooting for the Uruguayan kid, plucked from obscurity and signed by a famous club in the English Premier League. He looked nervous and bewildered in the photos and I’m not surprised. Let’s hope he can cope with this massive change in his life. Best wishes, Leandro, you are now a Blue and I’m with you all the way.

ps: Ignore the goal stats. This lad is not a main striker. He is intelligent, skilled and creative.

Harold - A Uruguayan poster on the Rodriguez thread said the goal stats on wiki are a load of bumpf anyway. His record is nearer to a goal in every two games.

I read on another site (a lot more reliable than Wikipedia btw) saying that he’s scored 9 in 23 last season so I don’t think we should necessarily be too concerned about whether he has an eye for goal.

Nice to see the usual premature, negativivty, pessimism, sarcasm, neurosis, paranoia, latino-phobia being spread around before the lads have even got fully on board and had the chance to kick a ball. I think I get where Lyndon was coming from with his plea for less destructive posting.

William #36, have you been following Everton for long? During the last 16 years for instance? (Although transfer cock-ups go back longer than that.)

Because, if you have, you’ll understand that brow-beaten supporters are well within their rights to be cynical and pessimistic about the machinations of this once-great club’s transfer "policy".

Kristian Boyce
51 Posted 25/08/2015 at 06:15:28
I’m struggling to find the Latino-Phobic posts on here, William. I've read through pretty much everything the last couple of days on here concerning the two players, and fail to see anything remotely offensive about either of them.

Other than some posters pointing out some facts on the quality of the Uruguay league or the success of South American players in England, with both points effectively being true, I can’t see anything negative towards the players themselves.

Either you are being over sensitive or you're making an issue out of nothing. The fact is that the majority of Latino players, coming directly from either North or South America, have struggled to adapt the the English league.

I think most people would struggle to name five players who have been a success. Other than Oscar, Lucas Levia and going back to Juninho and maybe Ossie, Latino players have struggled. Even Wenger admits it takes a season for a Latino player coming in even from another European club to settle here in the UK.

Bill, you're right. You have to have signed a contract before applying for the permit. As in a lot of misty legal matters, due diligence consists of weighing up whether it's worth a go. We'll see. Then we'll see if either of them are any good.

Interesting that people have been banging on about Martinez not bringing in any 'unknown South American diamonds', yet now that he is, it's apparently a disgrace because no one's heard of them. Who'd be a football manager.......

John Audsley

Can’t see any of that William.

Years of supporting Everton should condition every fan to expect misery with the odd ray of sunshine.

And Latino-phobic???

As you posted at 3:07 am, I can only guess you were pissed up.

Regarding the work permit, you would hope EFC looked into the chances of one being issued once the contract was finalised.

However, we have form on this issue, don’t we.....

I can see why some fans are upset with this latest development, especially if it's true. Only at Everton would this sort of thing continue to happen with no-one sorting it out so it doesn’t happen again.

Whoever did the deal must have known the rules so why bother if it was never going to work out? It does just makes us look like a joke really.

Lescott would be the wrong move. At 24 Mori has enough experience (okay, not in the Premier League) to provide cover now and has the potential to be Jagielka's long-term replacement. We don’t want a player as back-up who we will need to replace at the same time as Jags.

I heard Tim Vickery, the British football journalist based in South America interviewed on the radio on his opinion of Mori was pretty dire.

"As soon as I heard Everton were in for him I thought no, no, no and shook my head."

"He isn’t good enough, He isn’t strong enough, He isn’t fast enough."

He also said he had never shown anything to suggest he is up to standard to come over to the Premier League. I think he also questioned his temperament but I cant be sue.

Okay, so he's a journalist and not a specialist scout but he seems to talk sense usually and was excellent during the World Cup. Focusing on Brazilian and Argentinian footbal,l I will take his view over some other hacks until I can make a decision for myself, which may or may not come about.

However, it may be a blessing.

The ESPN FC link has a point. Funes Mori is used to playing not so deep in the defensive line. He is so aggressive marking near the midfield that he could struggle laying back and playing with a deep defense.

On the bright side, I’ve seen the match against Man City here in Argentina with some friends and our opinion was unanimous: In this team Funes Mori is a solid starter. (Several journalist on Twitter said the same.)

James (#62),

You take Vickery’s opinion over other hacks? At least most of those ’hacks’ are qualified journalists... even if they do spout bollocks.

Vickery is a know-nothing, who is only consulted because he’s a Brit in South America. A Brit who is consulted on Brazilian, Argentine, Chilean, Paraguayan, Columbian and even Mexican domestic AND national football affairs. Do you really think he has a clue what is going on outside of Boca Juniors?

Add to that how wildly wrong he has been on so so many ’promising’ players.

I hope we sign him and I’m confident he’s fucking brilliant purely because Vickery says he isn’t.

Harold Matthews

Ben Gibson is a fine left sided CB or LB.

Incidentally, Galloway is too left-sided. He can only go wherever his left boot points and it gets him and us in all sorts of trouble. Even Distin could turn both ways. This lad can’t, even when the other way is the easier option. It’s clockwise every time. Painful for the knees and painful to watch.

One week left, and we’re struggling to sign some Argentine defender no-one has ever heard of nor cares for; we're "potentially" in for some Uruguayan striker of apparently even lesser standing; and have walked away from the one signing that would have pacified an irascible fanbase and provided genuine hope.

But oh no, this is Everton after all. Nine times League Champions, founder members etc etc etc... reduced to laughing stock and mid-table mediocrity by a clandestine board of chancers and yes-men.

Lennon on loan and Evans in next Tuesday it is, saving Bill a week's wage for both. If we’re lucky. Lol

I have to disagree with anyone saying that the Board of Directors are clueless, I think they know exactly what there doing. They're taking the piss out of you all, who fall for their lies. They're not incompetent – they are successful business men, who know how to get the most out of fools.

Why do you think they gave Martinez a job? And, after last season, any other club would have sacked him.

This time next week, it will be all over; no matter who comes in or out, there will be lots to debate.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m hooked on TW, love the diverse views... but really hate the saying "in my opinion" – the very fact you post is your opinion, it’s like your either apologising or fishing for approval. Just write what you think and leave ot the "imo". Please moderatetors ban anyone who says "in my opinion". Haha!

I gave no opinion asides from MAYBE it's a blessing – I just detailed what I heard, didn't offer an opinion.

For the record, I would take the opinion of someone based in the region over those "hacks", who seemingly are only concerned about 4 teams in England plus Barca, Real and Bayern.

Martinez has confirmed his interest in Rivers Rodriguez!! So two unproven players from South America who Martinez himself describes as having potential.

I imagine the only other signing will be Lennon at the very last minute, so no Number 10 playmaker who Martinez said he needed 3 months ago.

Another pitiful transfer window!

John Daley

"Tim Vickery... he's a journalist and not a specialist scout."

He’s not even that. Just some bloke who taught English in Brazil and managed to position himself as an ’expert’ on Brazilian football, purely by virtue of being the only Brit on the block.

The way he’s constantly been laying into this particular player shows he’s got something of a personal stake in the matter now. He made a big deal about the guy not being good enough when the first rumours of a possible Everton bid begun to emerge and he vocally doubted it was true. Once the story was proven to have legs, he basically had no choice but to keep on with the over-the-top criticism, because he’d already backed himself into a corner by painting a Premier League career for this particular player as pure fantasy.

There are other, more complimentary, assessments of the player out there that contradict Vickapedia’s (as he apparently likes to be known.... Fuck me!) view that Mori is basically a bin liner full of mammoth shit on stilts though.

It was suggested by some that it was possibly misleading to view him as a fully fledged Argentina International, because the player could be nothing more than a space filling, one cap only, call up to the squad. Yet the manager who picked him went so far as to say he was the best young defender in the league and "represents the future of the national side".

Sure, there’s no guarantees he wouldn’t be gash for us, but there’s also no concrete proof he couldn’t be class for us. Whatever the merits of the player, I certainly wouldn’t be prematurely making my mind up about Mori solely off the back of some concerted campaign by Vickery to convince everyone he’s fucking shite and a nailed on flop before he’s even set foot on the pitch.

For once, I wish Ireland was also part of South America; we would never have got a work permit for McGeady...

Andy @ 68. I had a beer with a holidaymaker in a Spurs shirt last night and he was telling me that Mirallas for Lennon was a deal waiting for the weekend to happen!

My view was that the swop was scuppered some weeks ago but he was adamant it was sound info. It might have some legs if Kev doesn't figure on Sunday!

Phil, why after negotiating a new deal (which these days is very difficult and they include many clauses) would we sell or swap Mirallas? Surely we paid him a signing-on fee, an agent's fee and a lot of time and effort went into his new deal.

If nothing else happens, I won’t write off the transfer summer. Gerard Deulofeu has incredible potential and I believe he will become a heck of a player when settled.

Cleverley was a very smart buy so we didn’t pay much but we got a lot of value... somewhere between £15-20M. This is before these two chaps, who I’m not fazed over.

The number 10 is the only guy I wanted so I should be angry but, with the way Barkley is playing and RM trying out 4-4-2, I have hope..

Rob #69. I'm actually a big fan of Galloway. A tough young lad with a fighting spirit. I've been with him all the way.

Unfortunately, his reluctance to turn anti-clockwise has put us in trouble on more than one occasion. He'll know about it of course, so will the coaches. Hopefully, with plenty of work at Finch Farm, he'll put things right.

Silly Stones! Sell quick for 40m and strengthen the squad! Van Dijk will do!

Shocked if that's true!
Very surprised, I thought the kid had more sense after Lukakus speech.

What has happened to this fella? Bobby was saying that his transfer was hours away a few days ago and I have heard nothing since.
