Everton explain away-match credit rules

Everton have moved to clarify the situation regarding the eligibility for match credits for attending away matches in the wake of confusion among supporters.

Fans have raised questions as to why this season's League Cup ties have not earned credits towards ticketing for away games this season and Matt Kendall, the club's Head of Ticketing explained that priority is given to fans attending Premier League fixtures:

"It remains the Club’s priority to fairly reward fans for their support of the team and also ensure fair distribution of tickets when demand for tickets is greater than the allocation available.

"We recognise the amount of time, effort and, most importantly, money invested by supporters when following the Club in the Premier League week-in, week-out – both at Goodison and on the road. It is our priority to ensure the most loyal fans attending our league fixtures are prioritised when allocations are restricted for fixtures and it is for this reason credits are not awarded for away cup fixtures.”

Makes perfect sense if we're talking about tickets for a league away game. But those of us who made the effort to get to Barnsley and Reading in midweek should be prioritised for the Boro game ahead of someone who didn't go to either!

Too many variables in your suggestion there Rob ie two. Far too many for our administrators to blend together.

Cynical me says they want to sell more half-season tickets as they probably will if Everton were to make its way to the two-legged Semi-Final.

But what Mr Kendall doesn’t say is that you do get away credits for home cup games. So, you go to Barnsley, Reading and Middlesbrough for no credit. You watch Norwich at home and get one credit. A cynical stunt to boost home attendance when they know we’ll sell at at home regardless?

Whatever, this is a terribly disingenuous statement from the club. Follow this link for details. I accessed it five minutes ago so assume it is current policy.

Club update away credit for home cup-ties.

If I’m reading the OS right, it states that credits will be given for away PL games and HOME League Cup games. Why home League Cup games but not aways? That’s what supporters are querying, I would imagine, and the so-called clarification issued by the Club doesn’t even mention this issue.

Spot on, Steve. So I go to Barnsley, Reading and Middlesborough for no credit. Someone goes to Norwich at home and gets a credit. Mr Kendall’s statement is utterly disingenuous and misleading. A cynic would think this is an attempt to boost home cup game receipts, safe in the knowledge that no such incentive is needed to sell out away.

They do treat us like we are idiots at times, don’t they? The webpage link is here.

I understand the club want to reward the fans who go away every week but these games give us the opportunity to get on the ticket ladder instead of buying them off sites where people buy with no intention of going, just to keep maximum away stubs.

It was mentioned at the beginning of the season that the criteria was changing for away credits, in that HOME Cup games would give you an AWAY Credit, so I can’t see how it is confusing, plus the e-ticketing site now tells you how many credits you have when you log on.

Personally though, I think Everton have got it wrong, away Cup ties should count towards away credits.

This system doesn't reward the most loyal fans, as the statement suggests. It is simply a ploy to increase attendances at League Cup home games. I agree there should be an incentive there...but not to the detriment of away League Cup fans.

Including home cup ties is a sensible move in terms of boosting gate revenues and rewarding loyalty. That is no more cynical than the policy of prioritising the early sales of away tickets to season ticket holders. It does seem odd though not to include away cup ties as part of the selling criteria.

In the end, though, if you are a season ticket holder who goes to every away match season after season, you will qualify for any games which have low allocations.
