Martinez banking on 'big moves' with Moshiri's financial backing

, 24 April, 227comments  |  Jump to most recent

Roberto Martinez insists that there are signs that his Everton side is getting close to challenging for honours and that he feels he has earned the opportunity to drive the club forward.

Speaking in the wake of the Toffees' devastating loss in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley yesterday, Martinez says that he is looking ahead to strengthening the squad this summer with the millions promised by Everton's new majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri.

“The introduction of the new shareholder brings a different approach to the new squad," Martinez told the media. "We have the finances to compete with anyone within the fair play rules. That can only be a help. I see it no other way.

“The difficulty is building a squad without the money other teams have while they are fighting for the same aims you have. The arrival of the new shareholder is terrific, positive news for the future and helps you build squads.

“Clearly, at the end of the season we will need to make big moves and make sure we start the season with a strong team that is ready to fight and play the way we have to play.

"[Moshiri's] vision is to become a winning team and bring Everton to where we all want it. That goes into the footballing style. It is a shared vision.”

With his experiences as a shareholder at Arsenal, a club that has made demonstrable moves towards achieving its own ambitions during the Premier League era but where he was unable to make inroads into the boardroom, Moshiri will have plans for the short and long term and Martinez was asked if he was certain he would still be Everton's manager come the summer.

“You're asking the wrong man,” the Catalan replied.

"I just want to believe, with the work I have done for the last three years, there are signs there that we are getting close to challenging for silverware and where Everton should be.”

For me, this clearly shows he's been told his job is safe (for now at least) – despite the ending bull.

It's down to us to make sure our stupid inept board get the message that he is no longer welcome.

Get the banners out boys, and get your vocal chords ready for Saturday .... we need to make sure the message is loud and clear!!!!

Are these the ramblings of a man who only takes his head out of his arse long enough to verbalise the drivel he has been thinking?

Or has he been told something we don't know about.

Please, please don't inflict him on our club for any longer. Be gone now.

Excellent, we can buy Niasse's strike partner now!

And lt's not forget all the extra cash when Lukaku, Stones, Barkley, Mirallas and Deulofeu decide they've had enough of your morale-destrying stubbornness Roberto.

We could just about buy every current and ex-Wigan player for that? Phenomenal.

We had one good season, the second was a disaster, he had European football because his first season gained us it. He almost makes it sound like two, I genuinely believe he believes his own bullshit.

We have clearly gone backwards, Roberto inherited a team that was a proven top 6 side, and he's turned it into a shadow of itself whilst spending more money than any manager has had in the club's history.

Reading today's Echo, Greg O'Keeffe talks as if both Rom and Stones are already gone, so Roberto has to rebuild without his striker and best defender. This is something that can only make us fall further.

Roberto cannot be the man trusted with turning our fortunes back around, Moshiri has to act.

You'd think we'd narrowly won yesterday and were 8th in the league and just needed that little more investment...

All the money in the world means nothing of you can't train them or send them out in the right frame of mind and formation.

Not many managers would come out with this tripe if they didn't know they were staying for a little longer. I've got a horrible feeling he's been given the summer and perhaps until November...

We are going backwards.

Hopefully Moshiri doesn't view our current state through blue tinted glasses like others on the board and acts decisively.

When did he say this? If its today than that is scary. If its an old quote then who cares?

I noticed the, "That goes into the football style. It's a shared vision" bit. Does that mean Moshiri doesn't care about defending either? Now that is scary.

Actually every time he comes out with something, the bar for the next manager is continually lowered.

I wanted a world class manager ... Then an experienced one ... Then anyone whose surname was not Martinez ... Then anyone who was not off his rocker ...

I'm now so desperate that a faded photo of Gordon Lee will do. (It couldn't do much worse could it?)

Nigel, Leicester will set a precedent for this era of crazy transfer fees. Paraphrasing a commentator I heard, owners will more likely be looking towards "moneyballing" in the future rather than throw money down the bottomless pit.

I would seriously doubt Moshiri's credentials if he is still subscribed to the "big money" mentality.
Jamie Crowley
23 Posted 24/04/2016 at 00:00:26
It would not surprise me in the least if Moshiri – especially coming from Arsenal – isn't fussed about defending.

It also wouldn't surprise me if he and the rest of the board believe in the "philosophy". I can see them giving Martinez the summer with money to have one last -ditch effort at success.

If that does indeed happen, I think it will be a very, very short leash Roberto is on.

I think we need a change now. I'd prefer to see us cut the cord tomorrow morning. Our remaining games frankly mean very little in the grand scheme, and I believe it would be helpful to signal the beginning of a transition in leadership.

But it'd not surprise me if Roberto is standing on the sidelines, arms folded with brown shoes blazing, the beginning of August.

Why the hell is this deluded escapee from a Catalonian mental asylum still here? The club should have taken immediate action and fired him today. It looks more and more as if we not only have the worst manager in our history in charge of the team but also the most spineless, gutless board in the club's history too. Only when the team is playing to half empty stadiums as we slide inexorably towards relegation will they perhaps take action.

By the way, has everyone realised we are only four games from the end of the season and we are not actually MATHEMATICALLY safe from relegation this season! Thank God for the shit teams below us, but three of them won't be here next term.

Week after week, for 2½ years, Martinez watched the team dissolving into a humiliating shambles. He now insists it is an improvement. The only conclusion I can draw is that he is mad!

Those imbeciles who interview him never raise with him questions about the squad's obvious lack of physical fitness. I could go on but everything that needs saying has been said. The powers that be should long ago have put him and us out of our misery.

If it's going to happen tomorrow, I'd think it'll be announced by noon-ish. So when I wake at 7 am here in the States, first thing I'm doing is bringing up TW hoping to see the news.

But I have this terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach there will be no news...

Andrew James
31 Posted 25/04/2016 at 00:30:10
What concerns me is what the board think is acceptable or what they have ambition wise?

Is RM spinning them a line that we'll have youth coming through that is drilled to play the football he wants successfully? Or that more money will enable him to compete?

Baines yesterday when the winner went in had the look of a veteran who knew he'd been shafted. I suspect he felt shafted by his own management team and not just the jammy winning goal. Jags looked similar.

By the way, that little shit who pulled back Barkley. Should have been a red. One for the blatant shirt pull and second for the simulation.

But as Paul Traill said in another thread, we never fluke it or get the breaks.

I do think the capability within our squad has improved over the 3 years. That's progress. I'd even accept a short term dip in results if it was centred around developing players.

But the development has now stunted. Players aren't improving any more under Martinez. He's not getting results. Even if this was a long term plan, there's no reason to have Martinez continue it.

I still think that with the right appointment, and if we can hold onto players, we might look back on Roberto's time as being key in getting us back where we belong. But there's no way he's the man to continue the process.

Mike Green

How In the name of God can this team be close to challenging for honours? Do I need to name the players who need replacing because they are too old or not good enough?

Because of Martinez and his reluctance to play any promising youngsters, we have to put up with no defenders on the bench at Anfield, and no strikers on the bench in the FA Cup semi-final.

Please sack him before the start of next season.

Is Martinez really Svengali? How does he do it? Dave Whelan adored him, even after relegation. Kenwright loves him to death as we step into the quicksand.

Martinez is a charlatan. When will everyone realise and accept this. The board really needs to talk to respected senior players and ask them their opinions, without fear of recrimination.

Mr Moshiri, please save us from this death slide!

Niasse, £13.5 mil for someone you can't trust to play 90 mins. Fingers crossed for a new manager, someone we can trust to use up to £300 million wisely, and ensure there isn't a mutiny.

In my opinion, Mirallas and Deulofeu needed to start at Wembley to give Lukaku the service. Deulofeu deserves to start every match, and will need a great finisher to work with.

Jamie, from what I read, possibly even till 6/1 before we see the back of OPM. I can only hope we at least appoint a new man WAY before then and have him shape things right away.

Barry @ 21 . . . . Very worrying. Very, very clever posturing by 'The Sultan of Spin' indeed.

Everything about Moshiri to date has suggested he is doing the right thing. Not too brash, appointed his own man to the board, waiting and above all silent on all public announcements. I fully expect Martinez to be dispensed with when the time comes. That will be when he has the right manager either in position to accept a fast appointment so there is no position of uncertainty.

However, for Roberto to be bigging himself up in this way then it shows a complete arrogance and desperation. A dangerous mix.

Patience is the order of the day. I doubt if Martinez will be in his seat come September. The biggest indicator of all is; have Moshiri and Martinez had a meeting yet. Think about it. If not, then that says more than any public announcements on anything. And the more Roberto mouths off without having met the new money man then the more he digs his grave.

Arild Andersen

The above heading is a report on BBC Sports website. It seems everyone else can see the metamorphosis process in reverse. The Butterfly that once was our beloved club, returning into the caterpillar, that Wigan became under Martinez.

Howard – gone
Stones – gone
New rightback needed, only Coleman with any phenomenal know-how.
New left winger (oops... Niasse is our left winger...)
Mirallas – gone
Lukaku – gone
Not to mention Gibbo, Leon and Hibbo – all gone.

Big change and Martinez is not the right man to do this.

The board's plan appears to be to ride out the storm of anger and let the fans knock themselves out with banners, forum polls, etc., for the remaining few games in this ghastly season and then hopefully it will all blow over.

It's going to take something like a mass boycott of the remaining games to sway them, or a mass refusal to buy club merchandise. But they know we are addicted to the poison of being there to support the team on the day, which means they also know only a few of us would be militant enough to vote with our feet.

Let's get one thing straight, Martinez is not a charlatan, in as much as he doesn't believe he's wrong. His philosophy is deep seated and unchangeable. He has nothing that a decent manager couldn't work out in fifteen minutes, and even then, as has been said many times there's no "Plan B".

The style we played in his first season has been well and truly sussed yet he still lets his players go out probably knowing the opposition are aware of their tactics, or lack of them.

I don't think it would be fair not to lay some blame at the players door as there have been times this season when even our top players have played poorly to say the least. That being said, it's up to the manager to change things around and alter the approach to the game, unfortunately Martinez doesn't do that very well either.

I'm sure that, as others have said, Mr Martinez is a nice guy but so is my milkman, and I don't want him as manager of Everton either.

Time has run out for Roberto, he must go before the season ends.

Phil Sammon

£13.5M on Niasse and the guy still has the cheek to ask for more money.

I actually feel like he's dropped a clanger, here, that may upset Kenwright. The claim that he hasn't had money to spend will surely rankle BK, who has dished out more to the man than he ever did to his previous lover.

Christopher Dover
65 Posted 25/04/2016 at 08:37:26
While we are at it the board can come with a brand new way to help the Martinez way.

I have a season ticket for next season, so swap this for all the cup matches which he seems to be up for, would expect at least one trophy, the league games just sell at a fiver a game to those who want to come and sit through mostly tip tap, slow play and let's give the game away cause it does not matter as the cup will give us a trophy and I am phenomenal in that.

The board should be made to sit through the home games and give a verdict after each one with some hard questions being asked.

As most agree Wigan 2 is about to dawn if he stays and I for one do not want to be in the stand next season to witness it.

I am that gutted as to how our season and our development has gone under this fucking dickhead of a manager we have in charge that this is my last post on ToffeeWeb till he and his thick sidekick Jones are kicked out of our great club.

As for Lukaku, just when we needed him most, he has failed to deliver big time and has done for some weeks now. Don't play him in the final few games of the season. Hang him out to dry and see what mugs are willing to pay mega bucks for him.

Does this lad have a lot to learn, not only in football terms but what it should mean and what a privilege it is to represent our club. Don't think he knows what the word 'respect' means. Draw a line under the last two sorry seasons and move on. New investment and a new beginning for us all. We deserve better. Let's hope and pray that we get it...

We need Martinez gone now before we lose our top players. If they know he will still be here when the next transfer window opens they will be gone. The only hope we have of keeping them is if they see a top quality manager in place before that window opens and a transfer budget to go with.

Wake up, Bill, and smell the coffee – you need to act now. The only benefit of loosing the semi was that it may have been the catalyst that got Martinez out. Sadly no evidence yet.

Time is now of the essence, we need to re instate some belief and confidence now or we will see the likes of Lukaku, Barkley, Stones, Deulofeu, Coleman and possibly Mirallas all leaving.

If that's truly what Martinez has said, he really is clutching at straws. If I was either Kenwright or Moshiri, when it comes to financial backing, the first name I would bring to his attention is Niasse. Assuming that he was a purchase sanctioned by Martinez, it was clearly disastrous. He has contributed zilch.

I wouldn't trust Martinez with any financial war chest. He has had a good go at managing EFC, I'm afraid, irrespective of his 1st season and a decent cup run here and there, the league trend is downward.

He will be well compensated and so I feel little sympathy. But thanks for your efforts, Roberto, see yer lad and good luck in the future. Let's move forward with a new boss next season.

Realistically we'll see him sacked after the current campaign is over. He will be told privately and we will be looking at potential replacements for the next few weeks, sounding out who is interested. That is what I hope will happen.

What I don't get is the other smaller rumour doing the rounds with Martinez getting the backing of the board and he has up until Christmas to have us in contention for European places.

The only way the board will take action would be a mass protest at the next game and let them know we do't want a manager who has just given us the WORST HOME SEASON THE CLUBS HISTORY! That would be enough to get the manager sacked at Tranmere, never mind a Premier League club with our motto!

No way is he going while Bill Kenwright is at the helm, the man who speaks only when things are rosy. This proves that Everton Football Club has no standards and ambition anymore, something that most of us have already known for a long time.

Martinez talks of developing youth, so have most of the other clubs in the Premier League and get this Bobby, most of the other teams young players are doing better than ours.

How long can you keep classing the likes of Barkley young? He's been on the scene for nearly five years now and has regressed badly in the last 6 months or so.

Stones and Lukaku won't be our concerns in three months time anyway and our youth is so good Roberto that you decide to play Muhamed Besic right back instead of a right fullback by trade, Matthew Pennington.

Even taking the Man Utd game out of the equation, he should have been sacked after the worst performance I have ever seen last Wednesday night, but somehow he is still here spouting bull.

No, we will all still hear the same dross after we lose again next Saturday to Bournemouth following more defensive capers straight from the Martinez world of (non-)defending.

Nothing changes at the club that does errrrr.... nothing.

Mark (#68), I really hope that's true. But I swear I'll be massively shocked if he's sacked.

I said a few weeks back, the worst thing the board could do would to give him a warchest. It'd be madness.

I'm in work but looks like I'm going to be checking every hour or so to see if there's anything behind the headline. Can't see it myself. But hope springs eternal.

There's got be a manager out there that'd love this job and by that I don't mean Moyes, Howe, Dyche, Karanka etc. I mean an experienced "been there, done that" merchant. Surely someone can awaken the giant???

It's all a massive mess.

He has to talk positively but a big test will be the Goodison crowd on Saturday. We are a very kind bunch at home but if we play like shite and go a goal down then that's all going to change.

Once fans start shouting at the directors and the atmosphere gets nasty then it becomes a different story.

When people start having ago at them for all this they might start to listen.

What a fucking waste of a season.

I'm not a local or a season ticket holder, so advanced apologies for the hypocrisy, but I'd encourage those who are to no-show the next home game.

This shouldn't be seen as a criticism of us fans, but we accept way too much shit compared to other supporters, most likely because we've been 'trained' over the years by seasons of mediocrity, club sob stories, and lack of resources.

I genuinely believe an empty stadium is the only thing that'll force a change in leadership. And let's face it, it's unlikely you'll miss any entertainment.

In 30 years of supporting this club I've never felt this apathetic.

Things must change before it's too late.

I don't see a sacking coming unless that are mass protests, fan walk outs and decline in attendances. He has come out with two sound bites since the semi-final defeat which sound like he's very confident and maybe has had reassurances he will be leading still next season. This is all very depressing as like the vast number of fans, I just want to log in to read he has been relieved of his duties.

What big moves? What progress?

Martinez cant handle the squad he's got, this is not a Martinez out rant however their is not one player that's improved under his reign many have gone backwards or never had it anyway.

35 points off top spot, 22 off champions league spot, 18 off Europa league spot 11th in league all the teams below us have won more games (except Aston Villa). Same errors week in week out has not or cant address the obvious stand out errors.

What he has done is turned the fans against him and worse of all the players with his endless claptrap.

Yes Keith #88 I have just seen that as well, surely our board, media team, directors etc. must keep an eye on the mood of the fans. I struggle with the thought that they bury their collective heads in the sand and ignore our displeasure and sense of alarm.

I'm pretty forgiving and still thought Martinez could turn it round up to Christmas. 2016 has been a disaster though and it is clearly time for him to go. In fact how he remained in the job after last Wednesday I don't know.

The first season I loved what he brought to the club but I have no doubt that if he remains next season we will be fighting at the bottom and probably go down – no matter how much he spends.

I didn't even watch the derby (for the first time in 30 years) and thought the first half on Saturday was totally embarrassing – not helped by the biased dickhead commentators. Fair play to the crowd for lifting the team in the second half and a bit of pride was restored. Same old shite at the end though.

The most telling thing for me is that I have lost interest. I just don't believe we're worth watching now and I have no faith or hope. A new manager would immediately change that.

There is NO WAY Martinez will be in charge next season. If Moshiri is investing heavily into the squad then it will be under his terms and not Kenwright's.

An example: if your mate owned a small bit of a pub and you bought almost half and his barman was shit and you were getting ready to plough lots of dosh into it while your mate sat with a stupid grin saying, "What a barman", you would soon tell him in certain terms your replacing the barman.

People like Moshiri ain't stupid and history shows us that every major investment in a club the manager is replaced. I expect him gone end of season and not before but it would be nice to have it announced so we can relax until end of season and no need to go to games baying for blood.

Jim Bennings #81 you are spot on.

The club has lazy criteria , no vision, no ambition and as you say no standards.

And you know something... they don't give a hoot about the fans. And that's what angers me the most.. the sheer contempt they have for us... I have followed Everton for 44 years and I have never been so fed up frustrated at how they just drift along, cashing in there big fat sky pay checks and as they long as we stay in the prem, they don't care.

Teddy Bertin
99 Posted 25/04/2016 at 10:16:52
I think shouts that he's changed his tune about money are unfair. When given money he's spent well overall with Lukaku, Funes Mori, McCarthy etc (time will tell about Niasse) and when not given money he's also brought in good players: Barry, Cleverley, Deulofeu (who all came to the club to play for Martinez by the way, not because they love Everton).

I don't think anyone can deny that his football philosophy and nice guy manner has attracted some brilliant players to the club but at the end of the day the squad still looks unbalanced (despite having players to cover every position we still play people out of position every week) and he's really struggled to balance his philosophy with defending in the Premier League.

I genuinely believe that Martinez will have success somewhere else with a different coaching staff and a club a less complicated history and set up. We are a club that has achieved nothing in terms of silverware for so long, yet we feel entitled to it; we believe that we should have a stadium to compete with the biggest and the best yet many are very reserved when it comes to moving away and have relished being the underdog. We have had a chairman who loves the club more than anything yet has allowed it to be run behind the scenes like a joke.

The club is in a bit of a mess, yet equally we've all been proud at times of the way that we've managed to outperform begging spending teams.

This is not an easy job. Moyes made it look easy but if you look at the trail of manages before him it is clearly not. I don't want Moyes back but I hope this chairman can make some wholesale changes to the club that we can all get behind.

Teddy

You say he's spent well, and he has in some ways but selling a goal threat, player of the season and a guy who when he played for us, offered us a different way of mixing up play, I'm talking here about Fellaini and replacing him with McCarthy for 13 million who to me this season (and much of last) offers us next to nothing.

Yes we got good money for Fellaini but what Martinez did by selling him and replacing him with a player who offers nothing going forward has limited our variety of football.

Mori, for 9 million has proved a competent defender but you feel he's offered more in the opponents box at times than our own. Still unsure he's really the commanding figure we have been crying out for in defence.

Lennon for the money was a good signing I'll give him that.

The jury is still out for me on Deulofeu until he proves he can do it on a consistent basis over 90 minutes, and he needs to add goals to his game, he's got ability but so far in two spells with us and with Seville, all he has been is a substitute.

Niasse has been a woeful signing.
Please let's not beat around the bush, if this man does not play a substantial part in these last four games which have absolutely nothing at all riding on them then I don't believe he has a future here, I think he'll be flogged cut price in summer.

If Niasse is short on fitness (why and how still?) then he MUST play on Saturday surely??

If not then we can only assume Martinez believes he's bought a total dud.

As for his other signings.

McGeady =not good enough.

Besic =jury out on whether he's really good enough for a team hoping for big things, discipline wise poor and doesn't offer what we need in terms of creation.
Again no goal threat.

Barry =one of his better signings but coming to the end, and again, a midfielder offering nothing going forward (too many like that already).

Atsu =Dross.

Traore =Dross.

Kone =Not good enough.

Alcaraz =Utter dross, had terrible injury record when signing.

Lukaku =Up there with Lennon and Barry as his best signing.

If he stays then who will be out of the door, apart from the obvious big price tag suspects? If the the much-mentioned dressing room dissent is for real then surely the dissenters' position is untenable, which woukld leave him having to not just rebuild a squad biut pretty much pick an entirely new first team.

Only the Daily Star (for now) but at least a ray of sunshine...... possibly.

'Manuel Pellegrini, Frank de Boer and Ronald Koeman are all on a list of potential successors to the Spaniard. Former Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa is also understood to be interested in the job and has told friends he expects to manage in the Premier League next season.

But David Moyes is not currently being considered for a return to Goodison Park.

Martinez has endured a disastrous week as Everton followed up their Mersey derby thrashing by Liverpool with an FA Cup semi final defeat to Manchester United.

But it is understood the list of possible replacements was put together before Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Wembley.'

Fingers and toes all firmly crossed.

We need to get rid of Martinez now and get a new guy in who will inspire the likes of Lukaku to stay. If we wait till the summer it will be too late, let alone next season.

As a finance man Moshiri should understand it would be a lot cheaper & less risky to get rid of Martinez and build from the base we have today than to risk selling our assets and letting Martinez backfill. The cost of relegation far outweighs the money he may get from selling our "stars".

Denis Richardson

Teddy 99 - Martinez gave Wigan £23.5m for McCarthy, Robles and Kone - not including wages (which would also draw in Alcaraz).

Just fyi, Kone has been about as usful as Anichebe. 8 goals in 51 games over 3 seasons.

Nuff said.

Sam Hoare

An enormous overhaul is needed this Summer! This squad is full of padding now but at least we have some good young players coming through.

Howard – gone
Hibbert – finished (why on earth was he offered a new contract?!)
Stones – Leaving? Perhaps his poor form will see him stay now.
McCarthy – Wasn't convinced he was worth £13m when we bought and still am not. A poor man's Danny Drinkwater. I'd happily lose him.
Barry – Possible player of the season candidate but can't last forever, probably good for another season.
Osman – Little to offer now it would seem.
Mirallas – woefully underused this season though hasn't done alot when he has. Must be looking towards the exit.
McGeady – struggling to get in the Sheff Wed team.
Pienaar – one of my faves, finished here.
Gibson – Can he be relied upon? Good on his day. needs a run of games.
Kone – Probably not going anywhere but wouldn't be much missed.
Niasse – Who knows whats going on here?!!
Lukaku – thinks he's better than us. Not sure he is.

That's 13 first team players who could or should be on their way out. Of course it won't happen like that but it shows what a rebuild job is necessary.

Happily there should be some money to spend and i'd happily see the likes of Dowell, Ledson, Pennington, Connolly, Davies etc come in to play back up roles or more if they take their chances.

Sorry Teddy (99) have to disagree. Rom and the others came to Everton because we had finished in the top six for the last 5 seasons at least and the next step like Spurs is top 4 and Champions League unless the manager is inept.

An inept manager is one that preaches attacking play and does not even practise the basics such as penalties, free kicks and corners and these plays score goals. You can tell they do not practise these plays because of the lack of goals from these plays. When you consider the number of corners and missed headers very poor.

An inept manager has no formation plan for defence. One look at Klopp's former team and current team playing last week showed both pressed high as a team from a 4-3-3 formation and now our neighbours with a poor team are higher than us in the Premier League and are going to win the Europa league.

An inept manager buys players who are unfit, or crocked at very high prices on high salaries. Moyes bought crocks at throw away prices but learnt after buying Krøldrup for good money if unsure take players on a loan.

An inept manager rest players when they are playing well and even score and continues to play players to boost their confidence when they are playing badly.

It is sad for the club, the fans, the players and even Roberto that his best defence in the last 3 seasons with us has been the defence of his position as manager. With a football defence to match we would be the Champions League winners for the second season running.

Roberto's hope of managing again in UK and maybe European football is nearly zero.

Roberto who cannot defend, will have the same employment problems as Moyes who cannot attack and like Moyes will try to get a job so they can prove they can defend and attack respectively.

John (100) - 'Sky are not reporting anything to do with Martinez. Previous posts are wishful thinking (at best).'

Absolutely, as have all 'grrr!' Martinez posts been for at least a year.

Anyone who wants Martinez out (seems to be everyone) should understand that Martinez isn't responsible for whether Martinez stays or not.

If all the anger and ire currently aimed at Martinez was aimed at BK, the chances are he'd think 'Fuck this, Roberto you're out.'

I have seen and heard enough from Kenwright over the years to believe that for much of the time, he lives in a fantasy world that exists only inside his head.

If things are shit now, he's not thinking 'things are shit now' he's thinking 'things are shit now, but it's going to change and be wonderful and eventually everyone's going to say "Well done Bill! Well done for sticking to your guns and making Everton European champions"'

At the moment, for Bill, there are two realities.

1) We're not going down (probably)

2) Martinez is the lightning rod.

If you were the type of chancer BK is, you'd probably look at that and think 'I'll take that - not perfect but it'll buy me time and hopefully, things will change.'

Because that's how chancers 'plan.'

Kenwright out!

Ray of hope indeed Dennis (or is it Denis).

I really do not know where these guys get their information from so it's not so much the '...list of potential successors...' because that could be drawn up by the office tea lad, but the ' ...Bielsa is also understood to be interested in the job...' statement which is the ray of hope because it indicates to me that there is actually a job to be interested in. Not something that is formally in the public domain right now.

Now if Bielsa would a good choice I don't know. I think yes but he is a hard bstd and might just kill off some of the fairies who RM has spawned. But as I say it is the statement, not the name which raised my hopes.

I didn't bother watching the semi. I went to watch Airbus against Newtown in the Welsh Premier. Judging the display in the derby I reckon both teams would give our lot a run for their money.

It was bad enough my Manc mate dragging me out to watch the derby but watching us now has become so disenchanted I wasn't even that upset we lost. When a team does that then you know somethings badly amiss.

However unless the sheep start disappearing then the shepherds won't do anything. A mass walkout against Bournemouth and/or Norwich would be the only way to grab people's attention.

Ideally the clearout should start at the top. If BK is ill or just incompetent then he should step aside and of course RM.

The new manager should then clear out all the ''deadwood" from this squad which will make room for new and younger additions that will help get this club back to where it belongs.

RM was a big gamble that failed miserably and the number of disappointments this season proves it.

Okay – just grabbed lunch and 10 mins of Sky Sports News. They are doing a feature on Coco (aka R Martinez) playing the latest delusional interview again. I find it difficult not to scream as loudly as my missus did when Martial scored.

They then present the facts that the last two seasons have seen a spectacular decline in key stats (points, wins, goals scored and conceded) as well as the sobering fact that with 4 games remaining, we have only 8 more points from the last two seasons put together than from his first season (with another bloke's team).

BBC online have the Wigan in Disguise video which everyone should share across social media. We need to crank up the pressure on the decision makers. It will make more difference than just logging on every 10 mins to see the headline we all want to see.

The thought of winning the football lottery and being one of the big spenders for once should be a reason to be joyous and celebrate. Unfortunately, I just can't get excited.

Martinez could say we have £100m to spend before outgoings this summer, but it means very little until he stops setting his teams up to fail. Defensively, the transformation is fully complete now and we have become Wigan in disguise. It says a lot when the BBC are getting in on the action to mock us.

Also, I'm not a fan of David Moyes but I thought the Martinez comment about 10 years of mediocrity showed no class. He seems to be desperate to use any method to deflect and blame others..Anyone other than himself.

Martinez really isn't as savvy as I thought he was.

First he shits on Baines, a player most of us regard as a true Evertonian, and pisses off the previously passive Liverpool Echo in the process.

Now he throws a low blow at Moyes, a man with many media supporters and a big pal of Kenwright's.

I wonder if Bill knew of his pop at his 'close friend' before he proclaimed him to be the 'most wonderful man you could ever meet'?!

Tony Hill

The Echo is still fudging everything I see. Lots of pointed questions from Kirkbride and Prentice but still fighting shy, still terrified of upsetting anyone.

It's cowardly and it's journalistic failure because they know, or ought to know, what the vast majority of fans think and they should either be forcefully supporting that majority view or forcefully opposing it. Not hovering dismally and pointlessly somewhere above it all.

We are all waiting for the axe to fall on Roberto ,but with the Euros coming up in June I can't see any change until after then.

We had to wait years for BK, to his huge credit, to find us a billionaire, with Premier League experience who is prepared to invest his own money into our club at a time when global asset values have fallen off the scale.

Now we have him, let's give him at least a few months to get his feet under the table hey, and get his plans in place for step 2 that is, equity restructuring so he (possibly with a new partner) has full control. Once step 2 is sorted and corporate restructure is complete, Moshiri can focus on step 3, namely improving the performance of the team and the club. This will mean Martinez will go, a new manager will come in and money will be available to spend on the squad.

But let's take it one step at a time. Moshiri holds the cards but he doesn't (yet) hold sufficient equity to ensure he benefits fully from his future investment. Once he (with or without a new partner) holds the vast majority of the equity then we'll see changes in the playing side management.

That's where our focus should be now, when will Moshiri sort step 2? My guess will be summer. Until then expect no change as Moshiri has other fish to fry at the moment.

Andy #166 - with 49.9% I don't think Moshiri can realistically be outvoted. Theoretically he can be outvoted but practically impossible and improbable for the other 51.1% to collaborate to outvote him. So he can act now (please feel free, Mr Moshiri).

I also don't think he has EPL experience, as he was just a shareholder at Arsenal, but that won't make a difference, I guess.

Andy Walker
170 Posted 25/04/2016 at 17:46:09
Kenwright is already effectively out. Moshiri is the man now. BK now just a figurehead to massage his own ego and in the short term keep other shareholders onside.

BK is no longer the key man, that's Moshiri.

EFC website refers to press rumours about Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon and Eran Zahavi, Israeli international, being Everton targets.

I find this strange and annoying for Everton to repeat press speculation but not comment on it. My guess is that if they are targets, then Everton wouldn't be commenting on it. But in not denying it they are dangling tempting (but improbable) possibilities in front of us. Annoying.

Andy Walker
172 Posted 25/04/2016 at 17:51:14
Brent yes he can effectively control the club now, but he will want to increase his shareholding so he gets full value from his future investments. He isn't going to invest the rumoured £150m in the club for new players if he only owns 49.9%. Otherwise the other shareholders would just have to sit back invest nothing but get the same return as Moshiri.

Would be interesting to know the details and conditions surrounding Moshiri's share acquisition. While it is impossible to ignore his vested position on the board as the largest shareholder, by all accounts it appears team business is still managed/controlled by the same group of chancers.

Has Bill managed to find that gullible 'investor' he has been searching for all these years?! 'Don't worry about the silly results, old boy – my carefully selected team of visionaries have it all under control!"

Andy @166; I think you are being a tad optimistic to believe that Moshiri will assume total control by the summer. I thought the plan was for him to see how he settled in at the Club before extending his investment and control. Probably 18-24 months is my guess.

People have mocked me for claiming that Bill negotiated his continuing in the Chair and guiding the football side of things during this time. That came from someone within the structure who I have no reason to doubt and has been briefed to journalists.

Of course, the new investor will have a view on things (like the efficacy of the manager) but how far he may wish to conflict Bill at this juncture only he knows.

I must tell you that his afternoon's teacup indicated that results of the last four games may determine Roberto's future although those leaves may be no more accurate in foretelling the truth than the Twitterati!

One more thing I do wish people on here would stop referring to Bobby as a nice guy! Would a nice guy slag off his predecessor? This fucker needs to realise that Moyes, love him or loathe him, squeezed every drop out of mediocre players season upon season and turned us into a decent team that was hard to beat and tough to play against. Brent (#1690, I think you're right, mate. If say Moshiri put a motion to the board to be voted on, it would take a lot of work for the other 51·1% to blackball him.

However, if that was to happen, which I think is unlikely, all Moshiri needs to do is let it be known to the other board members, most importantly Kenwright, that if he doesn't get his way then he would sit on his shares and not provide transfer funds for the summer.

To see the look on bungling Bill's face then! Unfortunately I don't think their relationship is that way at the moment. He still getting shown around the place.

If you believe that discussions between Moshiri and Bill have been going on for 18 months, how much longer does he need?

I know this doesn't help the current situation that we are all trying to fathom out Martinez future. I believe Moshiri is the cold silent type, and you won't see him strike until it has happened.

I agree with other posters. I don't think Martinez is going anywhere either now before next season. The only way to change this is, as I think Eugene said earlier, Kenwright gets a clear message.

I think it just a tad too early for Moshiri to take charge at the risk of falling out with Kenwright.

The debate on here should be how as supporters we influence a board which, when is comes down to it, pay lip service to fans views but like politicians think that 'the punters' just moan just for the sake of it.

Football clubs, and ours in particular, exist in a democracy-free zone. Quite frankly, if Kenwright and/or Moshiri don't get the message loud and clear, Martinez will be here next season.

Kenwight hates conflict – particularly with his beloved manager –and will cling on to whatever positive shite Martinez spouts as being some sort of reality.

Please let's have some sort of concerted effort to get our view heard before an irreversible decision is made! I can't face another season with Martinez as our Manager!

Martinez has been painted as a nice guy who is just out of his depth. Bullshit! He is totally lacking in class and will take the opportunity to attack anyone who can deflect attention away from his own failings: Moyes, Baines, and pretty much any referees who has given a decision against his team.

Personally I don't think Moyes is the man to take us forward but his record is outstanding compared to the current tosser.

Andy Walker

I agree Ray. I just think the 49.9% was about perception. It helps to keep the other shareholders on side, avoids the 'takeover' headlines and offers a period of time for both Moshiri and the other major shareholders to get to know each other and consider the next steps.

I think it was a really smart move. It's the next move from Moshiri and when it may happen that will determine our future.

Phil Walling, I think you may be right but the last few weeks of atrocious results may just speed up Moshiri's plans. I think he will view keeping Martinez on for next season as a major risk, we could get relegated and that would be a total disaster for Moshiri and of course more importantly for us fans.

Andy Walker

Just adding to my previous posts, the key is what have Moshiri and Kenwright agreed between them whilst the deal was being done? I don't think Moshiri would have invested in our club if BK hadn't agreed to let Moshiri make the decisions from day 1. BK may be the puppet who delivers the messages and influences the other shareholders to ensure they see things Moshiri's way.

It seems our bully of a chairman who bans banners and AGMs so he can carry on with his mediocre running of the club is in the Martinez club possibly supported by his mouthpiece Elstone but the pressure from supporters allied to Moshiri's man and John Woods should enable enough questions to be asked and get this arrogant, deluded fool out of our club.

The interesting thing is I would never, and I am sure there are many on here who feel the same, want to abuse a manager of Everton but this charlatan encourages it wholesale.

Playing Devil's advocate, and only doing so in the interests of trying to understand why on earth Martinez has not yet been sacked, is the conversation something between him and the Board something like this...

Q. Well Roberto, why should we not show you the door? You promised Champions' League football.

A. I got you the record Premier League points total in my first season, narrowly missing out on Champions League.

Q True, but what about the disappointing 2nd season and an 11th place finish?

A. Yes league form was patchy but look at the Europa League experience. We progessed beyond the group stages and had some impressive wins along the way. Remember the two thumpings of Wolsburg? I also brought on some top young talent and increased the squad's value considerably.

Q. Ok, but how do you explain the absymal 3rd season?

A. You really wanted a trophy and Wembley to end the 21 year wait. I got you to 2 semi finals. In the first one we went toe to toe with big spending Man City. But for a very poor refereeing decision, we could well have gone through to that final. In the 2nd semi, we missed a penalty and then went out in the cruelest manner to a last second goal. This was despite also have several key players missing. Fine margains in both competitions but when was the last time you had 2 semi finals in one year? Plus, you can now sell two of those young stars in Lukaku and Stones who I have turned into first team regulars and get around £90m for the two of them. Not bad to have trebled your money in 3 years. Try getting that from a bank.

If you really believe that Kenwright is capable of discussing anything about Everton in a "reasoned logical manner" you are nor seeing the Bill Kenwright I've seen for the last 17 years.

Every sentence he's ever spoken about the club is embellished with a theatrical emotion-laden over-the-top descriptiveness which, when you think about it, perfectly fits his theatrical leaning. But reason and logic are not something that comes naturally to him.

That's why most of us have little faith in doing the right thing. In fact he's probably still in mourning over sacking Walter Smith!

What is shameful is the lack of any comment from Kenwright or Moshiri. It may be beneath them to connect with the fans and to read what is being written, but they sure as hell have "people" to do this for them. The Echo is hard to ignore. Today's sport media has contained little else.

So someone has to show proper respect to the people they depend upon and step up to the plate. Kenwright or another must tell us now just what is being considered. Will Martinez be in post to year end? Are they meeting to discuss our future? Is the deluded one their man for the future?

Shame on them if they remain silent.

'Roberto Martinez insists that there are signs that his Everton side is getting close to challenging for honours'
Well if the cups are his target, he's failed miserably. Consider some of the clubs who've reached the FA cup final over the last 15 years, like Portsmouth, Hull, Millwall, Cardiff and even his own Wigan; the league cup is the same, with Bradford, Cardiff, Bolton, Wigan, Birmingham, and even Tranmere not so long ago getting there, With all due respect, we ought to be aiming higher than an occasional cup final, great occasions that they are, they should be an added bonus when we fail to win the league, or don't get into the CL.
This club of ours has gone from pacesetters to also-rans in a generation. Kenwright has perpetuated this myth of 'over-achievers' to mask his lack of investment as our club lingers in the lower half, and our ground becomes a museum. To lose this attitude, we need to lose BK, who is a bigger bullshitter than Martinez, and accepts mediocrity like it's the Everton way.
Well I think the only ones who can change things now are the only true lovers of Everton FC - us, the fans: we now have a man who has invested in the club but probably fears rocking the boat due to the bullying chairman. I reckon he would be more assured and empowered if he knew we were all behind him.
Time for a show of support for him and anger against the rest of them, and let him understand that Nil Satis Nisi Optimum should be at the forefront of every decision this club makes

I want to believe that too - however I can't because I am firmly anchored in reality.

What I really don't get is how we can play like twats for the best part an hour and then do a complete 180 and look pretty damn good for the remaining 30 minutes -it was pretty much the same blokes on the pitch, why couldn't we start like that?

It's an absolute disgrace, that after a disastrous season, including a humiliation at Analfield, and dumped out of both cups, a board meeting hasn't been called to discuss the shambolic performance of Martinez. It's a kick in the teeth for the fans who follow the blues thick and thin. Everyone can see, he has to go. Moshiri has to take the bull by the horns, and get rid of him, Kenwright and Elstone now.

You only have to look across the park, after the redshite sacked Rodgers after drawing 1-1 at Goodison, and Klopp, with the same players, has transformed the club.

So, we've got a billionaire. If the rumours linking P Green to EFC are correct it would appear we had one all along. £50m for a toga party - think of the Niasses we could have bought. that.href="http://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/apr/25/bhs-philip-green-family-millions-administration-arcadia">Link

I understand there was an emergency board meeting last Thursday at Haydock.

If as I suspect Moshiri will keep his powder dry, and reveal all at what he feels is the right time.

In the mean time we will continue to speculate.

In some of the latest threads it appears we are starting to turn on ourselves, through utter frustration.

I still feel Moshiri is the quiet smiling assassin, and the first we will here is when the deed is done.

Ray, he is Iranian and they are ruthless. He hasn't bought Everton on any other basis than he will run it how he wants it rather than the current handover period with BK in charge. The danger is that sometimes totalitarian rule isn't best for what is very much a social game. I don't want Everton to become a franchise club but that is the only route for success. Leicester aren't the poor man's club that everybody imagines, they have a new ground and a lot of financial power. They are a big club compared to our current position.

Can't disagree with any of your comments.

I hang on to the ruthlessness you refer too, and hope upon hope that the current situation is in hand, and in keeping with my thoughts we won't know until the deed is done!

Ray,

I don't think TWebbers are turning on each other - I think the normal banter continues even in times of severe crisis.

What bothers me more is that whist we do debate among ourselves I'm not sure whether the board is in wired in to how the fans feel. Thankfully there have been some good articles in the mainstream media savaging Martinez.

We are though relying on banners being smuggled in to Goodison to at least get the message across.

I just wish collectively as TWebbers we can't organise some sort of action - like individual letters to Moshiri to dump Martinez. If we don't do something we may have only ourselves to blame if we start next with the Deluded One (great moniker by the way).

Sid, I hear what you are saying. I believe, however that Bill is no longer in charge, in fact he looked absolutely dreadful at Wembley.
Wait and see.

Ray & Martin 216/217#, I hope you're right, and he acts sooner rather than later, and Martin I know Leicester have financial power behind them, but the new stadium's capacity is only 32,000.

Keith,

It's the wait and see that bothers me. I know Kenwright looked dreadful and it looks like he's on some sort of steroids and I hope he recovers well.

As we all know he's massively part of the problem. However I can't help but feel Martinez will be there next season. Mind you I also thought our name was on the cup. So there you go!

For me the delay in getting shut of senor happy-thoughts suggests to me that Bungle Bill still has his sweaty palms all over OUR club, and his head firmly stuck up bobby's arse.

It's incredulous that we didn't send Martinez packing on Saturday night?

There is no way back for the man, the fans will have their say for the remaining games, and the toxic atmosphere at the old lady will only get worse. It's time to rip it up and start again with the Martinez plan, including getting shut of a large number of our squad.

They should put the poor bleeder out of his misery as soon as possible and while they are at it get him some psychological help.

How can giving sheeds/Unsy/Duncan a go for the remaining games hurt us any more than we are already hurting? In fact, I know the atmosphere next Saturday and going forward would be a million times better than keeping with the status quo.

Please god Martin #217 be right!

The man is a complete idiot. He talks about seeing signs in his 3 years that were close to competing for honours, talks about his first season and the record points (Built upon Moyes' habits still being imbedded in the players), a good European campaign in the second (forgets to mention the poor league form, performances and league position!) and 2 semi final spots this (1 we only turned up in for last half hour and the other we threw away when in a good position. Plus, you get nothing for being in semi's, people remember winners! And we could end up finishing worse off than the season before).

Now someone please tell me if I'm being thick, but the way I've seen it over the 3 years, is we've gone backwards and are no closer to competing for trophies than we have, say, 6/7 years ago!

He talks like these semi final appearances are the start of a new dawn and that's us on our way to bigger and better things but just look at his old Wigan team. They won the FA Cup but look where they are now! Middlesbrough have made league cup finals, won one and made the UEFA Cup final moons ago, but where are they now?! Yeah, trying to get back in the top league. Fulham, another that not so long ago made the Europa league final, and yeah you guessed it, their nowhere to be seen in the premier league and are closer to league 1!

So just cos one season you do well in the cups doesn't mean from then on in your going to start doing well in them all the time.

We will never ever amount to anything under this fool and the sooner we get rid the better. Kenwright can fuck off aswell cos if he had his way, Martinez will still be in charge next season and beyond!

Hopefully Mr. Moshiri puts his foot down and does want and get his own man in come the summer and we do look to kick on cos one thing is for certain, we won't be kicking on with Martinez, we'll end up going down!

"I just want to believe, with the work I have done for the last three years, there are signs there that we are getting close to challenging for silverware and where Everton should be.”

But you can't because that would be a ridiculous belief?

Sid#220 any protest if it's going to have the desired effect needs to be as public as possible to turn the screw even more.

Letters to Moshiri could have an effect but the protest needs to be more visual so every man and his dog knows the Fans aren't happy.

To force the board into action we have to whip up a media storm, which is already in motion, but it needs to be ramped up more, take a look across the park. Their protest was coordinated and showed people power.

Even poor Villa got the message across with their signs last weekend. What a state we are in.

Dan,

I would like to see both public protest and private protest.

In fact whatever to get our feeling across. Having said that you'd have to be living in a cave in the high Andes not to be getting the vibes of how the fans are feeling.

The problem is as ordinary fans you never quite know how the people who run the club live their lives. Whe you are a fan you read most of the TW posts and browse the media. The question is do they. Probably not!

I cannot believe he is still talking. The man is demented. What levels of arrogance and delusion can he attain? If he is still with our club next season I will never again support the club. 58 years I have been a devout Evertonian but this con man and our Chairman are killing the club. I cannot believe the anger that rages within me at what is happening at Goodison Park right now. FUCK OFF Martinez! Just go!

I would really like for someone to corner Moshiri, and get an interview, preferably without Kenwright at his elbow. All this speculation of what he will, or will not do, is frustrating. Just what exactly is his role? What kind of say does he have in the running of the club? Just what are his long term goals?

It's all been a little vague so far.

There seems to be a groundswell for a demonstration of the fans displeasure at Saturday's game but with each suggestion being dismissed for one reason or another. We could amalgamate a few, such as get right behind the team until the 78 minute, no protests, no anti Martinez chants, just support like last Saturday, then on 78 minutes complete silence, with everyone sitting waving white handkerchiefs, just one man, the grim reaper himself standing in the middle of Gladwys Street shouting " Roberto your time is up"

We only made the two Semi's due to the fact that aside from Chelsea, we never faced anybody of note in any of the other rounds.

We're only heading in one direction under Roberto, and it certainly isn't up!

Sid#230 if the club doesn't monitor websites like ToffeeWeb to gauge the overall opinion of their fan base then more fool them. That would show you just how amateur they actually are!

In the modern day and age not to do that would be criminal. I think people under estimate the power that social media has to influence events.

Every single post from every single individual on a site like TW can lead to a tsunami of influence that the higher ups would be stupid to ignore.

I've already said protest needs to be as public as possible, people posting on TW are fueling the fire more than they realise.

Websites like TW are a breeding ground for change, the man on the street must be heard and if it takes mass protests at Goodison bring it on.

Am I the only one that finds the way people talk about Martinez on this site really distasteful?

I said on a previous post that whether or not you think he's up to the job of managing our team, I suspect his legacy will benefit any subsequent managers by the way he has tried to develop the foundations.

It is clear he feels that this was let slip by Moyes and so hopefully he has made positive changes to rectify this.

But seriously, we haven't even given Moshiri a chance to put his stamp on the club before we are threatening protests and letters. Moshiri didn't become a billionaire without a little bit of ruthlessness so perhaps we should just see how this pans out and give him a chance?

Stuart #243 -

I think many feel the way Martinez talks is more than distasteful.

It is often galling to hear the pre and post match nonsense which bears little correlation to what happened on the pitch.

He's a big boy, paid millions by the club based on what long-suffering Evertonians are shelling-out.

Save your pity for the poor, homeless etc.

Mike #244 - not pity at all, more a point of giving our new majority shareholder a chance to prove himself. Whether Martinez is sacked now, end of the season or still here at the start of next year - I'm prepared to assume Moshiri knows what he wants and knows how he wants to get it.
Phil Walling
247 Posted 26/04/2016 at 12:48:07
I wonder if Moshiri's decision to put a proxy on the Board rather than really get involved himself is a sign that he doesn't seek great influence over the Club.

I don't think that he could possibly have imagined that things as basic as the manager's competency would have unravelled quite as quickly as they have and he may even be having second thoughts by now.

Perhaps he's already envious of Kenwright's previous' good friend 'and wishes he'd blown his £200M on a super yacht !

Dan Davies

Fair play Phil you don't give up do you. You may well be right Phil, time will tell. Ryazantsev being Moshiri's representative might just be a simple case of Moshiri being busy in London, so he would be Moshiri's eyes, ears and mouthpiece when he's not in attendance?
