I remember Charlie Leyfield at the City Arms in Saltney, Chester, at the same time Dixie was at the Dublin Packet, Alex Stevenson had the Shropshire Arms and I think George Burnett had the Marlborough Arms. My late father-in-law played in the same Brickfield team as Charlie.

Great article, thanks, Rob. Always good to learn about the way football was run in those days, eg, taking the Welsh team training session wearing a suit, collar and tie!

Can anyone name the players in the 1956 American tour picture? My effort:

From the left, Charlie Leyfield, Peter Farrell (captain), Tommy (TE) Jones, Tommy Egglinton, Don Donovan(?), Tony McNamara, Jimmy Tansey, ??, 'Nobby' Fielding, ??, Ken Rea, Cyril Lello.

This is one for the 'oldies' can anyone fill in the ??s?

Ah, the City Arms. Many a Friday lunchtime spent in it playing pool and having a naughty pint, as work was within yards of it...

A great read and lovely images, as ever. Interesting to read that Doncaster was regarded as an escape route from the "industrial pollution" of Sheffield!

The man shown third from right on the 1956 "golf" photo is Matt Woods. The centre-half could not dislodge Tommy E Jones from the team but would move on to enjoy great success at Blackburn Rovers.
