Groningen friendly is scrapped

Everton won't be playing FC Groningen next month after the club confirmed that arrangements could not be made with the local authorities.

The Blues were hoping to finalise three friendlies in the Netherlands as part of their pre-season preparations but a statement issued by Everton has confirmed that they couldn't reach an agreement with Groningen's mayor over hosting the match.

Good news. Surely, the players should have a longer holiday than that. The Arsenal match was 21st May. They won't have lost much sharpness in that time as professional athletes. Sounds like a case of all work and no play etc etc.

The first friendly listed on the official site is a game in Tanzania on 13th July.

Why does Groningen's mayor have a role in arranging friendlies?

Bummer, I was looking forward to that one the most. Great little party town.

Groningen is a great little town; you're right, Kev. Pity.

I think we know who scrapped it as he's scrapped Groningen friendlies before but it's not safe to name him on here.
