Ghezzal still on the radar

| Friday, 21 April 2017  23 Comments  [Jump to last]
Reports in France suggest that Everton are still monitoring the situation regarding Rachid Ghezzal whom they tried, unsuccessfully, to sign last summer.

The winger was close to completing an £11m move from Lyon to Goodison Park in August but the move fell through when he elected to stay and try to hammer out a new contract.

No deal was reached, however, but while both parties are still hopeful one can be agreed, the Blues are eyeing a swoop on a free transfer if his current contract expires without it being renewed.

Doesn't look prolific at all, 2 goals all season.

Not had the best of seasons, in and out of the team due to that contract impasse and had injuries but he's a talent.

Personally I feel we need another wide option, especially for down the right and that's where Ghezzal plays and IF we are still interested he could be a great addition on a free!

The boy can play football but there's a big difference in the pace of the Premier League to the French League.

Still worth a punt for me and to be linked with good player is encouraging.

Since the deal fell through last summer, we have signed Bolasie, Lookman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

I think if we do revive this one, it is a sign that the club are more worried about the long-term effects of Bolasie's injury than we thought.

Cracking player. Hope we sign him.

Alasdair, Ghezzal predominantly plays from the right. Both Lookman & Bolasie play best from the left and Calvert-Lewin is mainly a striker. Even Mirallas plays best down the left and at the minute we're using Barkley wide right so we need a genuine wide right player and Ghezzal is that.

We'll have to see how this one goes but I think he'd be a good addition...

Does this mean Geri won't be coming back??

I am not sure I would agree that we play as simply as Wide Right and Wide Left, Aidy (#6).

We play 1 Centre-forwat F (Rom) with a Attacking Midfielder in a central free role and a Wide Attacking Midfielder who operates down both sides during the course of a game.

The WAF options we have are Mirallas, Bolasie (when fit), Lookman and Calvert-Lewin. We also have Lennon, Deulofeu and McGeady who will all go in the summer.

The CAM (free role) is Barkley's at the moment. Obviously the likes of Rooney and Sigurdsson will increase competition in this area, which is why we are linked to them. We also have Dowell coming through who prefers to play this sort of role.

I am not sure Ghezzal can play in this role.

Don't get me wrong – if he signs on a free, it would be good business, but my suspicion is that it is paper talk generated by his agent to put pressure on Lyons to come up with a contract.

Why would we sign 3 similar players between our bid last summer falling through and this summer, and then still go after him? Just doesn't make sense to me.

This is a Steve Walsh pick, so – if we are still interested – then there is a good chance he will come.

I think a £65 million bid for Lacazette – what a player he is.

Lacazette for me all day long.

"My suspicion is that it is paper talk generated by his agent to put pressure on Lyon to come up with a contract."

I agree.

No discussion on a possible signing is complete without the mandatory YouTube clip: Link.

I can't believe that Lyon would play hardball with a player of this ability over a contract or that he could possibly be available on a free. He will of course be looking for a hefty signing on fee for himself and his agent. Touch of Mahrez and Yarmolenko about him. Buy Buy Buy. If he doesn't turn out. Sell for a serious profit.

As Mike says, this is a Steve Walsh pick. What's not to like?

Nah... didn't see him tracking back much. ;-)

I'd put a lifetime ban on anyone who plays in China, Kieran. They shouldn't be allowed to return, after they've stuffed their bank accounts, just because they're bored or realise the shitty level of football they're playing.

As far as I'm concerned, the likes of Oscar and Co can rot out there and enjoy their millions.

Barkley doesn't play from a central start-off position anymore, Alasdair. He plays wide right in a forward 3 but has the license to roam inside. Koeman said weeks ago he was playing Barkley in a new role and Barkley himself as said the same, that he's now playing wide right with a free role to come inside. Koeman is a 4-3-3 man and will more often than not revert to that and pick the players to suit that system.

At the minute he doesn't, or he does have the players and doesn't rate them and with the emergence of Davies, it's pushed Barkley out there for now so we do need wide right options. It's why we went for the likes of Ghezzal, Lucas Perez & Gabbiadini in the summer as they all play predominantly down the right as wide forwards...

What the fuck does CF WAF and CAM mean??? Can't people speak English no more. Pathetic... absolutely pathetic.

Have to agree to disagree on that one, Aidy.

Perez is a "Vardy style" forward first and foremost who sometimes plays down the left. Gabbiadini is mainly a forward, but he is left-footed, so is sometimes asked to play wide right, so he can cut-in and shoot (a la Kanchelskis). Neither one are a winger by trade. I think they were the pre Enner Valencia targets last summer.

I hope I am wrong, that we get Ghezzal, he rips up the Premier League and we finish in the top 4 next season. I just don't think we are really in for him. Based on our transfer dealings over the last 10 months or so.

The YouTube video is 5 mins of him diving. This is the best of him?

His control is not tight enough. No doubt he is fast, but he's too fast to keep it under control, the ball is Ricocheting everywhere. He's far too thin for my liking, he'd seriously need to bulk up to last in the Premier League. He's already had injuries this season.

Someone was joking saying he doesn't track back, but in a front three he will need to press and you see petulance in that video, far worse than Mirallas. He wouldn't press, he'd roll around for half-an-hour after he was tackled. He's not a scrapper.

Maybe it's just being in a bad move after watching that shite today, but this fella does not impress me at all. I'd prefer to buy Brahimi. He's got better control, is more powerfully built and can do all the neat little tricks as well. But he is another terrible diver.

There's a massive chance Ross, Rom, Geri, are all gone before next season, also not likely Bolasie will be back to start the season, so if Koeman likes to play 4-3-3 then he would need to make signings pretty much straight away at the start of the window.

Lookman, Mirallas nor Calvin-Lewin have taken a spot in the team so I'd pretty much say each of the 3 attacking positions are available to grab, but I expect that we will be buying players for the positions.

Were ready to take a lot of money into the club, we have to spend it wisely.

Rough price guide for sales:
Lukaku £75m.
Barkley £30m.
Niasse £8m.
Cleverley £8m.
Deulofeu £12m.
All pretty much nailed on to leave at a total of £135m.

McCarthy could be sold due to his strained relationship with Koeman, he'd command a £15m fee.

Not to mention one or two of Jags, Steklenburg, Barry could easily move on.

I'd say were in for our busiest summer ever, but if you look at Koemans time at Southampton he's used to such activity.

Basically I wouldn't rule out Ghezzal or anyone else at this time; it's going to go mad in this window for us.

Barry won't be going anywhere; I wouldn't surprised if he joins Koeman's staff eventually but McCarthy will be out the door quickest I think – not much love lost there.
