Answers to some common questions about using ToffeeWeb

Viewing ToffeeWeb on different devices

With the explosion of mobile and tablet devices in recent years, we've done our best to make the site as easy to use across varying screen sizes. The most-trafficked parts of ToffeeWeb should reformat to fit the viewport of your device but there will be instances where a photograph or data table does not resize and it extends off out of view.

This will be the case particularly on older pages. We are constantly working to upgrade this older content and improve the usability of the website across different devices but it is a time-consuming process.

The site doesn't fit on my screen

ToffeeWeb is designed for a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768. At that resolution the site should fit the screen exactly when your Web browser is "maximised". The core of the site's content is still adequately usable at 800x600, though; at that screen size you have to scroll horizontally to view the rest of the right-hand column which is mostly made up of advertising and promotional spots for other areas of ToffeeWeb.

Many people like to have some room around the outside of their browser window to access the desktop and other applications that may be floating behind so in that sense ToffeeWeb is optimised for 1152x864 and above.

Almost all modern monitors and laptop screens now ship with the ability to display at 1024x768, most are capable of larger resolutions. You can find out your current screen resolution settings in Windows XP by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Properties" and then clicking the "Settings" tab. Use the horizontal slider under "Screen resolution" to see what options your display offers.

In Windows Vista, open Display Settings by clicking the Start button, click Control Panel, then Appearance and Personalization, then Personalization, and then Display Settings. Under Resolution, move the slider to the setting you want, and then click Apply.

Obviously, if you're on a handheld device with a small screen, you'll need our "Mobile Edition" at www.toffeeweb.com/me (see below)

The fonts are too small

If our default text size is too small for your taste, you can now change it across much of the site with one mouse click on the text-zoom icons (e.g. ) in the dark grey horizontal resources bar underneath the main page header.

If you have cookies enabled in your browser (if you don't know what cookies are, chances are they are enabled) your preferred settings will be saved for the next time you visit ToffeeWeb. Be aware that on some parts of the site, increasing the text size, particularly to the largest setting, may affect the layout and some items may move around a little and not display as intended.

Hand-Held Devices

The Mobile Edition of ToffeeWeb is something we have offered for a while now but the chaotic state of the mobile browser platform —standards for handheld devices are less widely adopted by the carriers of mobile services than desktop web browsers — means that it is difficult to provide a single mobile site for all users.

While the issue of standards adoption in the industry is expected to change in the next couple of years, we'll offering two mobile versions at these URLs:
www.toffeeweb.com/mobile/    — WAP/WML
www.toffeeweb.com/me

We're hoping that one or both will work on your hand-held device or web-enabled phone. As always, we welcome your feedback and compatibility reports. Visit our Mobile Edition page for more details.
