The 2018-19 Squad

Marco Silva & Marcel Brands have done a decent job in reducing our huge squad & adding a couple quality signings. That leaves the question – what does the Everton squad look like for the coming season, and what potential signings will be added (or do we need) by the end of this Transfer Window.

Currently, our squad consists of 32 players:

Goalkeeper: Pickford, Stekelenburg, Virginia, Hewelt
Right-Back: Coleman, Kenny, Connolly
Right Centre-Back: Keane, Holgate
Left Centre-Back: Jagielka, Pennington
Left-Back: Digne, Baines, Martina
Right-Central Midfielder: Gueye, Schneiderlin, Joe Williams, McCarthy
Left-Central Midfielder: Davies, Besic, Baningime
Central Attacking Midfielder: Sigurdsson, Dowell, Vlasic
Right-Wing: Walcott, Sandro, Bolasie
Left-Wing: Richarlison, Lookman
Striker: Tosun, Calvert-Lewin, Niasse

However, I expect a couple outgoings & incomings in the next couple days.

I think we need 2 Centre-Backs in, and a physical box-to-box central midfielder. Everywhere else there is more than enough. Unless we look to replace Schneiderlin, which I highly doubt will happen.

Incomings:

Centre-Backs: Mina* (or Lascelles*), Rojo*
Left-Central Midfielder: Loftus-Cheek*

Outgoings:

Hewelt (loan)
Pennington (loan)
Martina
Connolly (loan)
Sandro (loan)

Looking forward, that leaves us with:

Goalkeeper: Pickford, Stekelenburg, Virginia
Right-Back: Coleman, Kenny
Right Centre-Back: Keane, Holgate, Jagielka
Left Centre-Back: Mina*, Rojo*
Left-Back: Digne, Baines
Right-Central Midfielder: Gueye, Schneiderlin, Baningime
Left-Central Midfielder: Loftus-Cheek*, Davies, McCarthy
Central Attacking Midfielder: Sigurdsson, Dowell
Right-Wing: Walcott, Bolasie
Left-Wing: Richarlison, Lookman
Striker: Tosun, Calvert-Lewin, Niasse

That leaves us with a starting line up of:

Pickford
Coleman(c) Keane Mina* Digne
Loftus-Cheek* Gueye Sigurdsson
Walcott Tosun Richarlison

Subs: Stekelenburg, Rojo, Baines, Schneiderlin, Davies, Lookman, Niasse.

With: Holgate, Kenny, Baningime, Dowell, Bolasie & Calvert-Lewin all fighting for a place in the team.

1. Pickford
2. Holgate
3. Baines
4. Keane
5. Mina* or Lascelles*
6. Jagielka
7. Bolasie
8. Loftus-Cheek*
10. Sigurdsson
11. Walcott
12. Digne
13. Virginia
14. Tosun
15. Rojo*
16. McCarthy
17. Gueye
18. Schneiderlin
19. Niasse
22. Stekelenburg
23. Coleman
26. Davies
28. Dowell
29. Calvert-Lewin
30. Richarlison
31. Lookman
34. Baningime
43. Kenny

That’s a pretty strong & exciting squad.

Either way - let’s all get behind Marco Silva & have some patience.

COYB!

Gareth,

It seems it's a bit like a shellgame or shifting deck-chairs around on the Titanic... I'm curious how many runs you get at this? I'm sure I've seen something like this three or four times already. Does that mean you keep getting it wrong???

Anyway, your submitted text had me puzzled with single and double asterisks but no key provided. I decided the single asterisk should mean:

* Player not yet signed, and may not ever be signed, but play along with me please.

Your final squad numbering went a little off-piste, so I've corrected a few of them. And you just dropped 21. Besic, 27. Vlasic, and 46. Joe Williams from the second squad without explaining their fate.

Oh, and you may need another update sooner rather than later: Bolasie seems to be half-way out the door...

Carry on!

Another article that comes under the heading of "Wishful Thinking". What is the point of speculating of players who are not signed for us?

As far as I know, the only mention of players such as Loftus-Cheek, Lascelles, Rojo, Zouma, Smalling, for example, coming to us has been in the press and the never-ending circle of ToffeeWebbers, who love a newspaper "rumour".

Let's try to be realistic for once rather than play "Football Manager". As someone once pointed out, you might as well include Hazard, Neymar and Messi in there with an asterisk for all the likelihood they are coming to play for EFC.

Sorry Gareth but that squad is:

a) fictional

b) not that strong and not that exciting

Recent seasons have seen us with two or three players that were coveted by the bigger clubs. Those players have either left the club or are now towards the tail-end of their career. With the possible exception of Pickford (and maybe Coleman) I don't think any of our squad would be challenging for a regular starting spot at any of the so-called big clubs in the Premier League. Something tells me this could be another long season of tempered ambition.

A week early, let's assess our squad when we actually know what it is.

I’m afraid there is no way Newcastle will let their captain go and very little chance of Loftus-Cheek coming if he has a chance of first team football at Chelsea.

Andrew, @3, I think your assessment is correct, but I would add that our two guys have made an excellent start in that;

1) they are offloading the right players.

2) they are signing better players or players with more potential.
I am sure they both see the EFC job as a five-year project and we will all have to show patience.

I personally have been immensely impressed with Brands. I can’t say the same for Silva yet as we have not played a competitive game, but I feel a real confidence in his abilities to become a top manager. Onward and upward. COYB.

Now we can update and discuss this article ( or maybe wait for Zouma confirmation??)

GK: Pickford, Virginia, Stekelenberg
DF: Zouma, Mina, Holgate, Keane, Jagielka, Baines, Digne, Coleman, Kenny
MD: Gueye, McCarthey, Schneiderlin, Baningime, Gomes, Davies, Sigurdsson, Bernard, Dowell, Williams
FWD: Tosun, Niasse, Walcott, Lookman, Richarilson, Calvert-Lewin

That is 28 players. Personally I'd like to see Jagielka moved on, feel he could do a great job at a team like Swansea on loan. Maybe wait for Mina and Zouma to settle in then let him enjoy his final couple of years as a player playing regular football. Or move Keane on loan to a foreign club.
McCathey also, while a top player when fit, maybe needs a change of scenery. Schneiderlin isn't going anywhere this season at least, let's hope he can regain his form.
Also, despite being a fan favourite, Niasse just isn't going to fit into our style of play, if a foreign club is interested, let him go.

There is also still Bolasie, Martina, and Besic to move on, probably on loan to championship teams.

But our defense now has pace, height, and power.
We now have creative midfielders who can score and pass the ball, but question marks hang over our defensive midfielders.
Our attack has pace and numerous potential goalscorers, yet maybe still lacking a true 20+ a season striker to make us challenge the top-4.
