Everton in the mix for Andre Gomes

| Wednesday, 08 August 2018 72comments  |  Jump to last
Everton are reportedly trying to tie up a deal with Barcelona for midfielder Andre Gomes.

Dominic King of MailSport has joined reporter Ian Abrahams in tweeting that the Blues have made a move for the 25-year-old who has also been strongly linked with West Ham in the last 48 hours.

Gomes was also the subject of speculation suggesting that he had been offered to Manchester United, perhaps along with Everton target Yerry Mina, as a make-weight in a bid for Paul Pogba.

There are no indications as yet whether the Blues' offer is to take Gomes on loan or on a permanent deal. He is currently out of action with a hamstring injury sustained on Barca's pre-season tour of the United States which might make a temporary move for him more likely.

Gomes, who made his name as a top player at Valencia, has reportedly been keen on a move the Premier League for a while and came close to joining Tottenham last year before the deal fell through.

@Alan #3 - I am OK with it if true - Man Utd aren't what they once were (under Fergie) - agent Moyes saw to that :-)

Here we go, here we go boys!

Superb player. He’s big but is technicallly gifted. GREAT PASSER of the ball, long or short. Great feet. Can shift it quickly. Superb technique.

Now he likes to play further forward. My first thought was what does this mean, is it him and Sigurdsson and Bernard wide with Charlie up top, or we drop Walcott?

But no. This lad is a passer. We drop him deep into the Schneiderlin role. It’s not his natural position but he’s got the skills.

The only concern is his injury record and he’s not really a good tackler. But he’s big, he should be able to Handle himself, he’s got more bulk on him than Schneiderlin or Gueye. He cost Barcelona £30m or so. He’s a bargain on loan, but get that fee locked into the contract.

Injuries really are a worry, especially as he has done his hamstring in pre-season. He’s only young though and it can settle down.

Is this one more forward thinking midfielder too many? I'm wary of things going the same way as last year.

Chris

He was very good when Portugal won the Euros two years back so much so that he got a move to Barcelona on the strength of it, he is a playmaker pretty tall with a lot of classy touches if we get him and he performs like he can it would be a brilliant signing just what we need in the midfield.

Okay it's on Wiki but nevertheless

He was voted the worst signing of the season by readers of Marca.

Mind you, Luka Modric won that a few years back

Hopefully Digne will sway it for us.. getting a tad nervous with the lack of talk about the two new centre halves we need.. but I've got faith in Brands to be doing work in the background as we speak.

This is getting incredibly exciting. At least it will be sorted one way or another by this time tomorrow.

All these signings gonna take a while to integrate though I don’t think we should expect to see them all firing for a few months

Possibly 3 players from Barcelona in the same transfer window. May not be MessI but it's a step up from the days of Moyes fishing for potential in the Championship

Would be a very nice addition -- solid, skillful, classy player, nothing spectacular but a complete professional.

Two cautions: first, there's been no hint of this in the Barca media as yet, so hold your enthusiasm. (I hope it's true, but where Barca transfers are concerned I wait to hear it from their side.)

And second, we wouldn't see him for quite a while. He tore that hamstring against Spurs 11 days ago and reports from Spain have him out of action for up to three months. He would then have to get fit. So we might not see him until December.

Nonetheless, I really like this rumor.

Michael #9, yes but that was after his first season at Barca, and they had a lot of great signings that year. Last season he played fewer games because of injury but got much better reviews when he did play.

I have been busy with the spreadsheet this afternoon on an exercise messers (not a typo) Koeman and Walsh ‘should’ have completed this time last year. We have to name a squad of 25 for the Premier league. Players under 21 at Jan 2018 can play without being named in the 25 (Davies, Baningime, Virginia, Lookman, Connolly, Dowell & Vlasic). I am assuming Galloway and Browning will stay at u23 level.

Counting the rest we currently have 23

Pickford & Stek, Coleman, Kenny & Martina, Baines & Digne, Jags, Keane, Pennington & Holgate, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Besic, Sigurdsson & McCarthy, Walcott, Richarlison & Bolasie, Tosun, DCL, Niasse & Sandro. Assume Bernard is no 24. Assume Mina is no 25.

So if Zouma and or Gomes come in, then we must loan out a corresponding player from above list or as is traditional, take away locker key and banish to u23s.
Andy Meighan
20 Posted 08/08/2018 at 18:48:34
This kid is a player, believe me. Be massive if we could pull this off. I watched him for Portugal a few times and the graft he puts in is immense. Hope to God this is not paper nonsense. A real coup if we do manage to land him.
Neil Copeland
21 Posted 08/08/2018 at 18:53:00
Frank, it is looking very likely that Bolasie will leave (at least on loan), Pennington to Leeds is another plus Martina and Vlasic if there is anyone interested in them.
Mike Gaynes
22 Posted 08/08/2018 at 18:57:22
Frank, I assume if Zouma comes it will be instead of Mina.

And yes, Koeman and Walsh certainly were messers. We're still cleaning up their mess.

Frank Wade
23 Posted 08/08/2018 at 19:02:56
Agreed Neil, Bolasie and Pennington seem the most likely, Martina perhaps ? Vlasic is in the u21 group. What a boost it would be to sign Bernard, Mina, Gomes and Zouma ? Dreamland.

Of course, there's always a but and we would possibly be closing off a route to first team exposure for some of the younger lads.

Perhaps Mike, it's Zouma or Mina, but looking at the incumbents, Jags, Keane, Pennington & Holgate. Holgate injured with achilles - notoriously hard to shake off, Jags getting on in years, Pennington - uncertain, Keane - uncertain. I would mind getting both, especially if Zouma on loan.

Even though we live in highly globalized world where it sometimes seems like nationality doesn't mean anything anymore, it's still obvious that it is really important where managers come from. Since Silva took charge we have been linked mostly with latino players - or at least from La Liga.
Don't mind that at all! Keep 'em Brazilians and Portuguese coming!
Dave Williams
25 Posted 08/08/2018 at 19:12:05
I can’t see it being a loan if he won’t be fit for 3 months. Would we buy now or try in January when he might be fit?
Huge day tomorrow- Bernard should be done so we need at least one if not two CBs and tie up a few exits. Brands is starting to look the part if he gets this little lot over the line- the difference between him and Walsh is remarkable- both ends of the spectrum.
Steve Mink
26 Posted 08/08/2018 at 19:14:04
A lovely player for sure but the right player to balance our midfield?

It's a crying shame that Danny Drinkwater is languishing as one of a dozen central midfielders at Chelsea. He would be such a good fit for us and would add some character too.

Colin Glassar
27 Posted 08/08/2018 at 19:17:42
Why oh why are we leaving this all so late again? The rs got their targets in early doors but we, once again, have left it until way too late.
Frank Wade
28 Posted 08/08/2018 at 19:26:00
Colin, In fairness, we have had a lot more to do than them and with the added complication of replacing Manager and DoF, which reduces time, plus squad assessment by new team, World Cup, shortened window etc. We have sold or loaned 11 players so far this window. We are doing well. What did they say about Rome ?

I like that the signings are all linked and have instant connections.

Digne played with Gueye at Lille. Already mates.
Digne played with Mina at Barca. Also friends.
Charlie played with Mina in Brazil. Already mates.
Apparently Charlie knows Bernard from just being in the Brazilian system.

Gomes played with Mina and Digne at Barca.

It seems like there’s some planning rather than leaving four or five strangers to develop a relationship when they don’t even speak the same language.

Steve #30 that's a nice point about the connections between all these players who are / might be coming in. It does seem to suggest something in the planning. And it does augur well for the way they could quickly feel at home.

And on a separate note, good coverage on BBC news tonight of Everton in the Community and the mental health support initiative. And good PR on our part to get it out there? And that's not me being cynical. A good, warm feeling.

Money honestly isn't an issue, so I am all for patience and waiting until we are 100% certain about the player than just "getting it done early." Doubly so when a new manager is involved.

I also think clubs that pay 72M for Allison should not be our barometer of choice.

Martin Berry
36 Posted 08/08/2018 at 19:43:56
His career has seriously gone off the rails at Barca and has a torrid time of it, maybe a fresh start is what he needs.
Appeared to be a special player when at Valencia and maybe Silva can rekindle that.
Personally I am a big Aaron Mooy fan, a quality passer who is well up to speed already with the Prem

If all this activity comes off then a round of drinks for the D of F and for Moshiri for recognising he needed a D of F that knows what he is doing rather than let Bill and Elstone have free reign over transfers.

Update on Everton’s pursuit of Andre Gomes. It would be an initial loan deal for the Portugal midfielder. Gomes is desperate for the move to happen. Bernard’s medical, meanwhile, has been completed and the signing should be made official at some point this morning

Can anyone clarify if he is injured, or first team ready?

If it is the former, how can he pass a medical while injured?

It would make more sense if he is injured, to defer the signing to the January window, I just don't know, there is so much information/disinformation I am totally confused.com.

Steve Ferns
62 Posted 09/08/2018 at 10:09:38
DK - the medical can be skipped on a loan. The medical is all about insurance. The parent club (Barcelona) are already covered by their insurance. So we do a basic one, depending on the size of any fee and wages. Of course if we spend £100m on a loan fee, we need to get a big insurance deal ourselves and so need a big medical, but if it's a "free" loan, then the medical is fast and covers the basics we need to make sure he's got two arms and two legs etc. I believe medicals became more stringent after we sold Michael Ball and Franny Jeffers to Rangers and Arsenal with bad knees when an intensive medical would have shown both had too much damage to their knees. Jeffers was effectively done by the time we sold him.

And yes, he is injured. How badly we will have to wait and see.

Two things immediately strike me from the Andre Gomes scouting video. Firstly, he's too good looking, and secondly he has excellent hair. I'm wondering how Tom Davies will feel about the latter?

Less importantly, he seems to be playing high up the pitch in the video. I thought he was more DM?

Steve Ferns
65 Posted 09/08/2018 at 10:27:11
No Michael, he's a no 8. It was me who wondered how we could crowbar all of our new signings into a first XI and hoped he could replace Schniederlin, despite the fact that he is not a good tackler!

I was clinging to the fact that his passing is excellent and he can hit those long passes Silva requires to spring the devastating fast counters.

Michael Lynch

Ah ok Steve, that might have been what threw me. So how do you think he would he fit into Silva's 433 (4123/4213) in that case?
