Ryan Astley completes loan move to Accrington Stanley

Ryan Astley has completed a season-long loan move to Accrington Stanley in League One.

The 20-year-old defender was one of The key players in Everton's Under-23s campaign last season, captaining the side with over 30 appearances in PL2 and other competitions.

Astley made his debut for the Under-23s in March 2018 as a 16-year-old and was named on the bench for the Premier League victory over Southampton in March 2021.

After being promoted to training with the first team last season, the closest he came to a senior debut was being named on the expanded subs bench for the FA Cup tie against Boreham Wood but Frank Lampard was disinclined to use the youngsters as he fought to save Everton from relegation to the Championship.

Seems he's already been playing in their pre-season friendlies:

Fingers crossed that he will avoid injuries and get to start as many games as he can (ideally he would get 3000+ minutes of playing time under his belt by next May). Heading to a club with lesser resources should also help him appreciate what he has had at Finch Farm.

I'm hopeful that the babysitting team Thelwell has put together will provide better support to all our outgoing loanees (especially the ones like Astley & Tyrer who are going to be "away from home" extensively for the first time in their lives) so that they can concentrate in getting game time and improving.
