EVERTON SEASON DIARY
June 1999
|
-
June 30: Young defender
Adam Farley has agreed to
a paltry one-year contract with Everton. Doesn't say much about their confidence
in him becoming a world-beater! Trabzonspor have called Everton's bluff and
raised the stakes on the Campbell deal to £3.5M. The matter may now
go to Fifa.
-
June 29: The French Connection at Goodison comes to an end
as Olivier Dacourt seals
his move to Lens for £6.5M. The injury to
Tommy Myhre is predictably
worse than expected, so Steve
Simonson is likely to start with the tough job of keeping goal against
Manchester United on 8 August.
-
June 28: Celtic defender Alan Stubbs, continually linked with
Everton, will have exploratory surgery today after the results of a routine
drugs test at the Scottish Cup Final showed abnormalities indicative of
testicular cancer.
Kevin Campbell
is expected to complete his protracted transfer to Everton today, after
Trabzonspor agreed a £3M deal, with
2/3 on installments .
-
Jun 27: Perugia have had a "derisory" bid of £2M for their
former player Marco Materazzi
firmly rejected by Everton.
-
Jun 26: Everton are officially acknowledging that they have
accepted a bid of £6.5M from Lens for
Olivier Dacourt. The transfer
is likely to be completed soon, provided he agrees personal terms. So the
certainty that he was joining Arsenal proves to be so much hot air...
-
Jun 25: The Turks are due in town to talk turkey (!) about
Kevin Campbell's hopefully imminent transfer to Everton.
-
Jun 24: The
Fixtures are out, and Everton
play host to all-conquering Manchester United on the opening day, 7 August.
Fiorentina have backed out the pre-season match-up at Goodison Park on 3
August: the visitors will now be PSV Eindhoven.
-
Jun 23: Investors
in Everton kick off their campaign to raise Everton's profile in the
City with a well-received conference at London's Waldorf Hotel.
Promising young left-back, Adam Eaton, has been allowed to move to
Preston North End for a nominal fee of £5,000 after only being offered
a 1-yr contract extension.
-
Jun 22: Ibrahima
Bakayoko becomes the first player in Walter Smith's clear-out, going
back to France on a £4M move to Olympique Marseille.
-
Jun 21: Michael Branch was bound over to keep the peace after
appearing before the beak on a drunk & disorderly charge...
-
Jun 20: Since Olivier Dacourt hasn't yet gone to Arsenal,
he must be on his way to... er... Liverpool? Not!
-
Jun 19: Who will be the first in Walter Smith's long-touted
but so far non-existent clear-out? Now that Adrian Heath is at Sheffield
United, he must want, er, Mitch Ward?
-
Jun 18: A group of professional and influential Everton fans
are pushing forward with their mission to encourage investment in Everton.
-
Jun 17: The Dacourt deal with Arsenal is apparently done and
dusted, but the Campbell saga looks set to drag on as Kev tries to sort out
some personal issues with the Turks.
-
Jun 16: Physiotherapist Andy Jones has left after
just two seasons to join Charlton Athletic. Andrew is replaced by Steve Hardwick,
who arrives from Bournemouth.
-
Jun 15: Former Everton star Adrian Heath has signed a
three-year contract to take over as manager of First Division Sheffield United.
-
Jun 14: Following a postal fiasco of Buckley Finch
proportions, Everton have extended by two weeks the deadline(s) for discounted
renewal of season tickets at the
new prices.
-
Jun 13: Yes its Sunday, and its time for more idle tabloid
transfer twaddle. Can you say Dean Saunders? Why bother...
-
Jun 12: The Stubbs link just won't die a natural death.
He's nearly as ugly as Una are they perhaps related? Mitch Ward to
Barnsley for £0.5M? Maybe... Maybe not.
-
Jun 11: Everton have turned down a £5
million offer from Bordeaux for
Olivier Dacourt.
-
Jun 10: The Everton Shareholders are getting ansi following
an inconclusive AGM where the club maintained that it could not talk about
the stillborn takeover process: according to Takeover Panel rules, the only
one allowed to speak is Peter Johnson!
-
Jun 9: Walton MP Kilfoyle has started asking questions
about Peter Johnson's illegal ownership of two senior football clubs.
David Weir played in Scotland's
dramatic 2-3 defeat to the Czech Republic;
Scot Gemmill was on the
subs' bench.
-
Jun 8: Everton have turned down a bid from Burnley of
£300k for Paul Gerrard,
and are sticking out for £500k.
Steve Simonsen put in a
great display for England U-21 to keep a clean sheet in Bulgaria as his team
won 1-0.
-
Jun 7: Promising Youth
Cup / U-19 midfielder Tony Hibbert
has signed a new 3-year contract and teenage defender
Adam Farley has agreed a
1-year deal. Neville Southall
and Mark Hughes will take joint control of the Welsh national team for the
Euro 2000 qualifier against Denmark at Anfield on Wednesday. The pair have
been appointed on a temporary basis following the resignation of Bobby Gould.
-
Jun 6: Peter Reid has been named as the new part-time
England U-21 coach. Mitch Ward to Barnsley for £0.5M? Maybe... Maybe
not.
-
Jun 5: It is being widely reported that
Olivier Dacourt's "advisors"
have agreed terms with Arsenal, but that Ollie won't actually sign for another
fortnight. The fee is reported to be £6M. Steve Simonsen was not even
on the bench for England's U-21 3-0 win over Sweden.
-
Jun 4:
Ibrahima Bakayoko
is the latest to join the list of "Will they? Won't they?" non-movers. A
host of French clubs are said to be interested in taking him after just 7
months in the Premiership.
-
Jun 3: Despite the media hype, Everton have received
no offers for Olivier Dacourt
from Spurs, Arsenal, or anyone else. "He remains an Everton player for
the foreseeable future."
-
Jun 2:
Francis Jeffers
has tonsillitis and has pulled out of the England U-21 Squad.
Michael Ball has also withdrawn
with a groin problem. He needs a rest and should never have been picked anyway.
Steve Simonsen is still
involved.
-
Jun 1: Everton have as expected denied any validity
to the links for Ruel Fox of Spurs. Even the idiots at TeamTalk have finally
twigged there ain't any money for transfers, but will that stop them?
