EVERTON SEASON DIARY
April 1999
|
-
30th: Everton enter tomorrow's match at Chelsea without two key players
Materazzi and Gemmill who are suspended, plus the usual list
of long-term injuries.
-
29th: Kevin
Campbell has been voted FA Carling Player of the Month after his
six-shooting escapades that have all but saved Everton from the dreaded drop.
-
28th: Everton Reserves get walloped 3-0
at Aston Villa and slip back to sixth place in the Pontins League Premier
Division. David Weir, Don Hutchison and Scott Gemmill all play for Scotland
against Germany in Bremen, where the Hutch stuns the entire world with his
match-winning goal. Michael Ball and Francis Jeffers were on the substitutes
bench for England 1-1 draw in Hungary.
-
27th: Everton's Youth Team win the home leg of the FA
Youth Cup semi-final 1-0 against West Ham United
but fail 1-3 on aggregate. Steve Simonsen sat on the bench for the England
U-21 match in Hungary, which finished 2-2. Clifford Finch announces that
he will be resigning from Everton's Board of Directors at the end of the
season.
-
26th: Everton Reserves beat Birmingham
City 3-0 at Goodison Park in the Pontins League Premier Division.
-
25th: Michael Branch has been arrested for being drunk and disorderly
in Matthew Street, Liverpool.
-
24th: Everton finally break free from the relegation mire by
destroying rivals Charlton Athletic 4-1
in a crucial Premiership run-in match-up, and thereby chalking up a second
double for the season. Kevin Campbell got another two goals, bringing his
ration to more than 1 per match. The match also signals the start of Everton's
live audio commentary via the Internet, courtesy of
Virgin.net which
was basically a disaster for most punters.
-
23rd: Joe Parkinson
has been told he can finally start light training after an agonizing two-year
absence.
-
21st: Wally Smith stands up for Everton
Badboy, Ollie Dacourt before the FA Disciplinary Committee on a good
day, and comes away with only a £2,500 fine and a smack on the wrist,
but NO BAN!!!
-
20th: Everton's Youth Team crash 0-3 in the first leg of the
FA Youth Cup semi-final away at West Ham United.
But Everton get some good news in the
Premiership relegation scrap, with
Charlton losing 1-4 to Spurs at home.
-
19th: Everton Reserves beat Nottingham
Forest 5-2 at Goodison Park, with Cadamarteri bagging a hat-trick and Michael
Branch straining his hamstring. Richard Dunne and Joe Parkinson are back
in training after long injury layoffs.
-
17th: Everton travel to St James Park and return with a priceless
3-1 victory over Newcastle United, thanks to
two goals from Kevin Campbell, a penalty save from Tommy Myhre off Alan Shearer,
and a brilliant first-time volley from Scott Gemmill at the death. That's
the first double of the season!
-
14th: Everton Reserves draw 0-0 at home
to Blackburn Rovers. Paul
Gerrard returned from his long loan spell with Oxford United to take
up the Reserves goalie jersey.
Gareth Farrelly also got a
game after a long layoff due to injury.
-
13th: Everton want to appeal against Marco Materazzi's red card v
Coventry but in FA parlance it was only a yellow card offence, so no appeal
is possible.
-
12th: Major suspension trouble looms for Everton
Badboys in the relegation run-in, where both Materazzi and Dacourt
will miss the last three matches. Barmby and Gemmill will also miss a match
each. Everton Reserves lose 2-3 at Stoke City.
Everton Under-17s lose 1-2 to Watford and are knocked
out of the FA Youth Academy National Playoffs
-
11th: Kevin Campbell's two goals win it for Everton against
Coventry City, despite the best efforts of the
referee Rob Harris to influence proceedings, booking five Everton players
and sending off Marco Materazzi after Darren Huckerby dived. Ibrahima Bakayoko
scored for the Ivory Coast as they beat Congo 2-0 in the African Nations
Cup.
-
10th: The other also-rans down in the
Premiership relegation mire Charlton,
Southampton, Notts Forest all lost today, which is good news
for Everton.
-
9th: Following his inappropriate goal celebration in the Anfield derby
last weekend, Liverpool's Robbie "Smackhead" Fowler is awarded a 4-match
ban and large fine.
-
8th: Everton's Youth Cup team will meet West Ham who beat Arsenal
4-0 in the replay of their drawn 6th Round tie.
-
7th: Everton Reserves lose badly 2-5 to Sunderland. Nick Barmby's
booking v Liverpool was apparently his fifth of the season, although no-one,
including our Everton Badboys page, lists more
than four yellow cards... If correct, Barmby will miss the trip to Newcastle
United on April 17.
-
6th: Everton's Under-17 team finished 4th
in Group A of the FA Youth Academy Premier League, and qualify for the national
playoffs.
-
5th: Just what is Walter Smith playing at? He drops Michael Ball and
plays Tony Grant! Everton unsurprisingly crash 1-2 at Goodison Park to
Sheffield Wednesday after Franny Jeffers scored
another excellent goal. But stupid backpassess by Unsworth and Materazzi
gift a precious win to The Wednesday. And a solitary goal from
Graham Stuart for Charlton away
at West Ham lifts the Addicks above Everton, who slide ominously into 18th
position.
-
4th: Both Everton badboys Ollie Dacourt
and Nick Barmby are walking the disciplinary tightrope tomorrow: Barmby has
4 yellows, Dacourt has 13.
-
3rd: Everton's 5-yr spell over neighbours
Liverpool finally ends in predictable fashion
with another bizarre team selection which included the useless Michael Branch,
and way-too-late substitution by Walter Smith in the160th derby match.
Final score: 2-3 with goals from Dacourt and Jeffers. Debuts for
Gemmill and
Campbell, bringing the
total numbers of players used this season to 35 an all-time club record.
-
2nd: Everton go into tomorrow's derby missing 11 first-team
players: Hutchison (suspended); Bakayoko, Bilic, Collins, Cleland,
Dunne, Farrelly, Williamson, Phelan, Parkinson (injured); Gerrard
(on loan). Everton Under-19s win the inaugural
FA Youth Academy Regional Title, heading Group A by one goal from Manchester
United.
-
1st: Ibrahima Bakayoko is injured and Don Hutchison suspended
for the Anfield derby.
