Classic Everton Chants

Chants from bygone eras that may surface again from time to time

The Ballad Of Davey Hickson

"I've been supporting Everton now for fifty years (first game: Everton v Chelsea, 5 Feb 1955).  I remember my mate, Harry Owens, bringing into the playground at Rathbone a version of The Ballad of Davy Crockett. Apart from the factual inaccuracy, Dave Hickson was born in Salford, but moved to Ellesmere Port as a three year old, it's rather a good song.  I wonder if any other older Evertonians, remember this.  Or was it just a product of Harry and his dad's private imagination ? — ToffeeWeb reader, Rick Tarleton"

Born in the grasslands of Ellesmere Port,
Football was his favourite sport,
Signed on for Everton at seventeen
And he's the best since the great Dixie Dean,
Davie, Davie Hickson,
King of Goodison Park.

Ev-er-ton, Ev-er-ton, Ev-er-ton

A special contribution from Harold Somers

"One of the funniest Everton-related television moments was Alas Smith and Jones doing a skit just before the 1986 Cup Final where talking face-to-face about the "great songs the fans sing", for example ... and you've gotta sing this to appreciate it!"

(To the tune of Hurray for the Red White and Blue, a.k.a. Here We Go):

Everton, Everton, Everton (knowing nods as they're getting into the groove)
Everton, Everton, Everto-on (pause while they screw up their faces trying to remember the next line...)
Ah yes... Everton, Everton, Everton (Long pause, then, triumphantly...)
Everto-on, E-VER-TON

Reprise:

Everton, Everton, Everton
Everton, Everton, Everto-on
Ah yes... Everton, Everton, Everton
Everto-on, E-VER-TON

It's A Long Way To Wembley Stadium

It's a long way to Wembley Stadium
For the greatest team I know

Goodbye Upper Parly
Farewell Clayton Square
It's a long long way to Wembley Stadium
But Everton will be there

The Mighty Everton

(to the tune of Mighty Quinn, a late sixties hit for Herman's Hermits)

Onward Evertonians

Onward Evertonians
Onward for to see
See the Royal twin towers
And Royal Wem-ber-ley

See the Royal Blue jerseys
As faithful as can be
Forging on to victory
And fighting con-stant-ly

Onward Evertonians,
Don't let your pride be moved:
Remember our song for Wem-ber-ley
Is: We Shall Not Be Moved.

Show them the way to go home

Show them the way to go home
They're tired and they don't know what to do
'Cause they're only half a football team
Compared to the Boys in Blue.

St John's Body

(to the tune of John Brown's Body)

St John's body lies a molding in the grave,
St John's body lies a molding in the grave,
St John's body lies a molding in the grave,
and Alex Young goes marching on.

We are the Scousers

We are the Scousers
The cock of the north
We all hate United
And City of course
We only drink whiskey
And bottles of Brown
The Everton Boys are in town

We Hate Nottingham Forest

(to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory)

We hate Nottingham Forest
We hate Liverpool too
We hate City and United
But Everton we love you.

We'll Be Running Round Wembley With the Cup

We’ll be running round Wembley with the Cup

Running round Wembley with the Cup
Singing aye aye, yippie yippie aye

Singing aye aye, yippie aye aye, yippie

When You're Smiling

(an old standard, originally by Dean Martin)

Oh when you're smiling,
When you're smiling,
The whole world smiles with you

And when your laughing,
when you're laughing,
The sun comes shining through.

But when you're crying, you'll bring on the rain
So stop your crying, be happy again

Coz when you're smiling,
When you're smiling,
The whole world smiles with you...

... without yer kecks on!
