Dale, Brighton have made nine changes to their starting line up today, though I don't know if it's strengthened or weakened their team, but it clearly shows a total lack of respect to Bournemouth. Somehow, I can't see Brighton being anywhere near the top seven or eight this season. See they have now equalised, but if they want to throw all their eggs into the Europa League basket, then their league form / position could suffer as a consequence.

Brentford could be one team that struggles this season, perhaps alongside Palace and who knows Chelsea?

Think sometimes we have a misperception on what Gordon did or didn't do at Everton.

The Gordon I recall under Benitez worked his arse off but was rather raw and frustrating in terms of end product, pretty much the same under Lampard but we knew he was a threat at least with his direct running.

We are probably seeing a better player under a more stable club setup now.

All three probably favourites to lose, and if we beat Luton then there could already be a bit of a gap opening up for the bottom three. Still very early doors, I know, but we've seen how these gaps can get wider and wider if any teams go on a losing run.

Paul (101) Yes it was pretty regular to both grounds on alternative weeks although I was seventeen then so went to plenty of away games around that time, there was quite a few Bluenoses at that game to watch Dave Hickson and some of us were a bit pissed off that Everton had sold him. Some of my best mates supported Liverpool so they would come to Goodison to watch the Blues as I went to Anfield with them, different in those days, plenty of arguments but no fisticuffs!!

I think your memory is playing tricks on you, I agree that Hickson left for Liverpool in November 1959, Catterick was manager of Sheffield Wednesday at that time, he joined Everton as manager in April 1961. So Johnny Carey must have been the manager interested in Hunt, when Hickson was sold. As a side note, Shankly joined Liverpool a few days after Hickson what an epoch making end to the Fifties, that was. Roger Hunt had only joined the other lot in the summer of 1958, unlikely, even then to be swapped for an Everton player, even in those days, I would have thought.

Hickson was undoubtedly revered at Everton, but equally despised by the red half of the city. Supporters of the Reds, then struggling in Division Two, would soon be appeased. Hickson scored twice on his Liverpool debut at Anfield, watched by a crowd 15,000 higher than the average that season. Days later Liverpool had a new manager, Bill Shankly. Shankly had previously managed Hickson at Huddersfield and again made effective use of Hickson's style.

Interesting, Barry, considering the Geordies probably haven't even got started with regards to their newly found spending capabilities. Money is everything, but only if it's spent wisely, by professional people who have got a well-thought-out plan.

Moshiri's plan was that he didn't want us to take up to much of his time, so he either left a patronizing, self-serving, incompetent fraud in charge, or was only allowed to buy Everton if he agreed to let a patronizing, self-serving, incompetent fraud stay in charge.

I think logic actually points to it being Usmanov's club, but whoever owns Everton has completely messed up the job, because they have lacked genuine professionalism. No question.

There will be all sorts of twists and turns in the season but the table is already showing some early signs.

- The three promoted sides are obviously struggling. All have weak sides and inexperienced managers at this level. Kompany can get them playing pretty football but he's never dug a side out of a losing run and might be out of his depth. They're missing Harwood-Bellis and Tella from last season. Sheff Utd are missing Ndiaye from last season and their manager must be close to the sack after today. Luton are a third tier side that have massively overachieved. They will finish bottom.

- Bournemouth have a reasonable squad (probably as good as ours) but an inexperienced manager for the Premier League. They might improve but will still struggle. We're better placed than them despite plenty of quality in their squad.

- Wolves are playing like a side that lost their best players and haven't replaced the old guard of Rui Patricio, Boly, Neves, Moutinho, Traore and Jiminez. It's a good job Neto is performing. O'Neill might be the manager for a bounce, but not for the season. I expect him to be sacked and replaced in due course.

In that context, I think we'll do okay with Dyche. We're well organised defensively and sides in trouble usually aren't. We won't score bags of goals but will do okay with Beto, DCL, Danjuma, McNeil and Harrison soon too.

I predicted 13th at the season start and still stand by that. Bit crap obviously but an improvement and a platform.

Barry (121), yes that makes sense, but what was the supporter with a banner on the pitch with “ Caterick out “ complaining about, Caterick is the wrong spelling but the supporter had spelt it with one ‘t', by the way although Shankly managed Davie at Huddersfield I think it was Andy Beattie who bought him from Aston Villa.

My memory is definitely playing tricks with me, maybe the banner was over him dropping Alex Young and playing Joe Royle although that was years later, 1966.

Although I can't see any way for EFC to win the league, I sort of think the team's woeful start to the season, and then its progression with finally winning, might look a lot like the Kendall Team of '83/84. But today I guess we'll have to be happy to get up above 10 to gulp some top-tasting air... ;P

Paul#113, I was at Marine on a Sunday some months ago watching my grandsons train and got talking to a couple standing next to me - turned out they were members of Billy Morrey's family on a sentimental return from abroad to College Road.

They said Billy is still going, not quite as mobile as he once was, I told them what a good player he was.
