Opinion: Dyche could be tempted to make selection call on defender

Everton narrowly beat League 2 side Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup, and there was plenty of room for improvement for the Toffees moving forwards. They were outplayed and offered little attacking threat in the first-half of that clash with Donny, which will have been hugely frustrating for their supporters to witness.

Sean Dyche named a relatively strong starting XI, with many of those players having a considerable amount of experience of playing their football in the Premier League. However, Dyche’s side struggled to stamp any sort of authority down on the game, which saw Doncaster take the lead late into the opening 45 minutes.

That disappointing first-half display saw three changes at the interval, which included Nathan Patterson, who found it tough to make his mark on the game on Wednesday evening. The full-back has been with Everton since 2022, having signed for the club from Scottish giants, Rangers. He’s not made the most notable of impacts at Goodison Park though, with Patterson finding life in the Premier League tough at times, which will be a concern.

Everton are struggling for any sort of momentum, and some might argue that Patterson needs a spell out of the starting XI for a period of time. James Garner occupied the right-back spot for the majority of the second-half against Doncaster Rovers, and put in a strong showing, which showed that he’s proving to be a versatile option, having primarily operated as a central midfielder.

Something needs to change in this Everton team if they’re to stay clear of the relegation zone, and a change in personnel could be the way to do just that, and so it really wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see Patterson replaced heading into September’s run of fixtures.

It’s been revealed by the experts at mybettingsites.co.uk that Everton are priced at 5/4 on Sky Bet to be relegated from the Premier League this season, which will be tempting odds for some punters.
