Everton have secured Portuguese striker Beto in a deal reportedly worth up to £26m, eight months after failing in a bid to sign him before the winter transfer deadline.
The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract today to complete his transfer from Udinese and become the Toffees' fifth signing of the summer. He will wear the Number 14 shirt last donned by Andros Townsend.
While the fee is officially 'undisclosed', sources in Italy are reporting that the deal is worth a fixed fee of €31m plus a further €8m in potential bonus payments, around £33.5m in total. The Athletic along with other reputable outlets in England claim, however, that the initial deal is in the region of £21.4m, well below the player's recently-expired release clause, with a further £4.2m possibly to come in performance-related add-ons.
The same report by The Athletic also suggests that Everton won't be due to pay any first instalment on Beto until the next financial year which represents smart business for the cash-strapped Blues who supporters hope will still be looking to strengthen the squad before the upcoming deadline, particularly if Demarai Gray's proposed move to Saudi Arabia goes through.
“When a club like Everton tries to buy you in January and then comes again in the summer, you feel like, 'Okay, they want me for real', so that made the decision easy for me as well," Beto said. "My idol, Samuel Eto’o, played here, too, which makes it even more special.
“I can bring courage, I can bring confidence and I think my biggest thing is effort. I will always bring enthusiasm to the team and to our games. I feel like my style is a really good fit with Everton.
“I am looking forward to getting started - today, right now. I know the team needs to score more goals and I will try to help with this. I love to score goals. I know we need this and I am here to help.
"I talked to Gerard Deulofeu the day before I travelled. He told me Everton is a big club, has crazy fans, they love you and it is a really good club to play for."
Born in Lisbon with ancestral ties to Guinea-Bissau, Beto was something of a late bloomer, first asked to join Benfica's academy before being let go as a teenager. He eventually signed with amateur side URD Tires in Portugal's fifth tier and worked part-time in KFC to earn a living before moving to Olimpico Montijo where he netted 21 goals in 34 games, alerting Portimonense SC who snapped him up in 2019.
He has been with Udinese since joining them from Portimonense, initially on loan, in 2021 having scored 13 goals in 47 appearances for the Portuguese club. That move was made permanent the following year in a €7m deal Beto has since played 65 games for the Serie A outfit, scoring 22 times.
At 6' 4", the burly striker is seen as a viable replacement and competitor to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who has battled successive injuries over the past two years.
His arrival is expected to end Everton's interest in Southampton's Ché Adams but his St Mary's team-mate, Kamaldeen Sulemana, continues to be linked with a move to Goodison Park.

However, the manager's thought process is to assess fitness, well his fitness levels, before thinking of a player starting. We don't have time, even after just 3 games, to fart around with these mysterious fitness levels.
If Calvert-Lewin is not fit, then start him!

75 minutes against Juventus on the 20th August.
In the cup game, he scored and had an assist.

He also said in his interview that the Everton fans are massive, bigger than the other fans. Does he mean the Udinese fans or the RS?

Rob - The RS obviously!

Also, if true, a bloody good bit of footwork by Thelwell on the financial deal! Amazing!
Now just a creative attacking midfielder, please.

27 Posted 29/08/2023 at 14:42:46
Get Beto playing with two forwards alongside him and a creative midfielder behind him and we might actually score a goal this season.
Continue with Garner and Doucoure in 2 of the 3 creative supporting roles and it won't matter who we sign.
28 Posted 29/08/2023 at 14:46:11
Relieved to see the striker purchase ban has finally been lifted. This time, I've stayed away from researching the player and know quite little of him, preferring to watch "cold" and be pleasantly surprised. Here's hoping.
29 Posted 29/08/2023 at 14:48:23
Thelwell should take a bow on that deal, eh, Mick?
30 Posted 29/08/2023 at 14:49:15
I don't in any way think he's going to be prolific. However, there's a good chance his overall impact on the team will be considerable. The ball will stick, it can go in the air, and we can play it in the channels. I think that's ten extra points right there.
31 Posted 29/08/2023 at 14:50:38
As long as he brings goals as well.

"Erm no. He has a bad thigh strain.
"Why is that if he hasn't trained?"
"Well he sat on the plane too long, I blame the air traffic controllers, the bastards have injured our new striker, you couldn't make it up, he's out for three months, but I suppose, this is Everton."
"Chermiti not ready, Maupay will start the match."
37 Posted 29/08/2023 at 15:04:09
Would make a nice change from some of the garbage we have signed in recent seasons. Still, in my opinion, we still need a decent midfielder as it's piss poor. UTFT
38 Posted 29/08/2023 at 15:04:36
This is what it's like to be small.
They signed Endo.
We signed Mr Betoooo, Mr Bettooooo.
Good stuff. In fairness, if you'd told me our summer would include £40M on two 6ft-2in+ strikers and 2 goalscoring wingers, I'd have snapped your hand off. Not having them in before now is criminal, but hey ho.
Be nice to get one defensive addition over 38 years old to cover in Young…..CB, CDM, or left-footed attacking left-back would be nice.
Then it's all on Dyche… two games to save his skin.
39 Posted 29/08/2023 at 15:05:51
If we can generate £25M from Gray and Iwobi, that will hopefully allow a couple of other purchases.
42 Posted 29/08/2023 at 15:12:05
Hopefully exactly what we need!

Looking forward to seeing Mr Beto in action, and this might just light the blue touch paper and get things moving.
If the manager is smart then Beto leads the line vs Sheffield Utd, not smart would be more of the same ‘unlucky' poor quality.

If the deal is structured the way some say on here, all credit to Thelwell, good piece of business.

"It's not just about how many goals Beto will get – if he can hold up the ball he'll create more chances for midfielders".
Agree, Robert. And the brief glimpse of Chermiti on Saturday suggests somebody else who might be able to hold the ball up and lay it off.
Luxury, sheer luxury.
64 Posted 29/08/2023 at 15:39:00
A bit later than I would have liked but this is great news. All we need now is a goalscoring midfield player and better full-back cover.

When your at the bottom the only way is up so any help we get up front will be good.
I am not saying we will become a competitive outfit overnight so any points in the next few games would be welcome.
With maybe Iwobi bringing in some cash and another signing the signs are we can make a turning point to alleviate this horrible start.
75 Posted 29/08/2023 at 16:09:20
76 Posted 29/08/2023 at 16:16:04
Branthwaite solves a problem at centre-back and him and Tarkowski look our best pairing. Would be nice to get a commanding centre-back in though because Tarkowski is good at blocking but is very slow and not great with the ball at his feet.
I still think we are woefully short at fullback. I know Patterson is young and still learning but our best right-back is still Seamus Coleman. Ashley Young is not young, I'm afraid. He looks like being the next Fabian Delph and getting one last payday from Everton. Mykolenko is decent at best. Godfrey hasn't been the same player since he got COVID and then got injured in the first game last season.
Everyone knows that we need some pace and creativity through midfield. How I wish we had a Tim Cahill type goal threat from midfield. They are desperately sad times when some of us are pinning our hopes on Deli Ali returning to some sort of form. Out wide, when everyone is fit, we seem to have pretty good options. Danjuma looks promising. Harrison is an upgrade on Gray and McNeill was one of our best outfield players last year. I think Garner could be a good player for us and Onana needs to dominate the midfield more. Unfortunately, I think Idrissa Gueye is too slow for today's game, makes too many mistakes and offers nothing going forward.
I'd like to see us sell Gray and Iwobi and invest in a playmaker.
I still don't fancy us at Sheffield United. I think that will be an intimidating atmosphere and our away form has been dreadful for years. Hope they prove me wrong.
We need to fix the home form. I really hope our survival doesn't depend on fans doing coach welcomes and blue flares come next April, again. Let's start treating home games at the start of the season as cup finals.

83 Posted 29/08/2023 at 16:47:50
It is desperate times Craig (76) but this is a start. We still need a Peter Reid in midfield, as it looks like Gana Gueye, is getting caught and being late in tackles. If Godfrey might get better with some tuteledge from Sean Dyche. He's athletic and might make a defensive midfielder. I think Gueye, Onana and Doucouré are all too slow for our midfield, but it's a case of change were we can and make do with what we've got.
But so far, there looks to be a pattern in our recruitment that will give us some (I was going to say more!) goals.

106 Posted 29/08/2023 at 17:50:24
We will not go down. Can't see it happening.
We played very well in two of our losses (very well) and certainly didn't deserve two loses. The glaring, quite obvious issue being an inability to score goals and not having a proper striker up top.
Problem solved. And now we have Beto, Calvert-Lewin, and Chermiti (who I really like the look of) moving forward. From bare bones nothing to depth in like 1-2 weeks.
And people rip Thelwell? He's done a fucking fabulous job under the circumstances.
Off we go with hope restored! Welcome aboard, Beto!
107 Posted 29/08/2023 at 17:53:43
He does, however offer us somethings we need in the middle of our attack, height, strength, speed (certainly got those attributes!) saw some of his goals and his speed and strength will certainly make him dangerous.
It didn't show much of him bringing other players into action; but I suppose these clips just want to show his goal action.
Anyway, I can't wait to see him and what he brings to our attack.
If we don't sell, or send on loan, Maupay, then I wouldn't discount him getting some goals for us alonside a centre forward as he's done before.
All in all, looking very good so far; and looks alarmingly like there's a logic behind our recruitment!

2 from Beto, DCL and Chermiti. Wide options Danjuma, Dobbin, McNeil, Garner.
If we stick with a 4-3-3 it certainly looks like we can almost perm any 3 from 6 as a fluid forward line.
One more thing, most people are talking about Saturday as the big challenge. We need to put a strong eleven out tomorrow night and take the game to Doncaster.
A few goals would do us all a world of good.
116 Posted 29/08/2023 at 18:18:42
From where we were a couple of weeks ago to where we are now, I think its a great improvement. We'll have to wait for Harrison and McNeill; but nevertheless, when all fit, I think we'll improve our chances to move out of the relegation zone and improve as the season moves on.
it's parts of midfield and defence I think we're weak
but lets see what happens between now and the end of the month!

I liked, when asked what he would bring to the team, he said aggression and enthusiasm, which I liked. Started in the 5th tier in Portugal and had a part-time job in KFC, so he has had to work his way up the ranks, a bit like Vardy did. Now I am not saying he is going to be as good as Vardy, but it's a good grounding.
He said he watched his idol Eto'o play for us and he was also a fan of Lukaku. At Udinese, he played with Deulofeu who said the fans are great and told him to join us.

I like it too that he worked his way up from very lowly football beginnings. He hasn't needed a silver spoon to get to the top, just hard graft and producing the goods on every step of the way. He's done it the hard way, no reason at all that he won't continue in the same vein at Everton.

Thelwell has done a super job getting this one over the line. He deserves no praise because he did not get this done before the Fulham game?
You have no idea if Beto was our number one target a few weeks ago. The deal that Thelwel has negotiated matches our financial situation perfectly (and might possibly free up money for another signing).
It's easy to come up with single sentence remarks but situations are usually a little more complex and nuanced than that.

136 Posted 29/08/2023 at 20:06:25
While we're at it, sell Gana who is way past his best and replace with a midfield destroyer. We are a soft touch through the middle of midfield.
137 Posted 29/08/2023 at 20:07:43
Gallagher won't play too regularly for Chelsea as he's being blamed for them conceding goals.

Can only get Beto,
Can only get Beto,
Now He's a Blue
Let's all D'ream eh!!!!!!
143 Posted 29/08/2023 at 21:05:21
He's had a preseason and a couple of games so can get on the pitch straight away. Will need to give him time to adjust but really relieved we can now stop wondering every Friday if Calvert-Lewin is fit or not!
Season starts now and, with a few of the injured back in September, we can look to kick on and get clear of the drop zone.
If anyone can, you Beto can!
144 Posted 29/08/2023 at 21:10:54
Now for a superman midfielder WHO can score, assist and defend.
148 Posted 29/08/2023 at 21:31:41
I struggle to understand what some Evertonians want or expect. Hands up who thinks Thelwell has done a great job, still three days to go.
I said on another thread that I hope Dyche plays a full-strength team tomorrow. 2 or 3 goals would be a huge morale booster for Saturday.
149 Posted 29/08/2023 at 21:35:46
We need our wingers to give him the right ball, the service has been so poor, no wonder Calvert-Lewin got injured. Hope for a couple of more signings, a midfielder instead of Iwobi would suffice.
Here's hoping he has a baptism of fire on Saturday, and hope Dom can make the bench.
Give Dyche two games? Are you for real?
154 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:03:45
For a really great window I'd love to see Alli, Gbamin and Gomes shipped for some low fees to Saudi clubs. Adam Wharton in to replace them.
155 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:04:50
What will Dyche do against Doncaster?
Strong starting eleven or save the "big" guns for Saturday?
I think we need a confidence lift so we need to pass the first round by any means. Make it work, Mr Dyche, no excuses now.
156 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:05:10
Question: is Beto available to play v Doncaster?
157 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:07:33
And if Beto fails for 4 consecutive games, get rid!

Any other players born 31st Jan we can sign?
163 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:29:52
Well pitched, and the season has a massive boost.
The past, is the past, and we live for now, every day is a good day.
For me, this is in context, all circumstances, where all circumstances, are known, the biggest transfer impact signing for decades. Hamed, was massive, but this for me is the decisive buy, to hange the whole out look of EFC.
Well done K T, and Team!
Everton, since January, have run the media gauntlet, and completed a signing, from initial to final interest.
This signing, will kick start this season.

NBlThere's a long way to go, but Everton, are boxing clever, at last.
164 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:30:47
I'll reserve judgement until I've seen him play a few games.
Good luck to him and all Toffees!
A bit of luck on and off the pitch is what's needed now.
165 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:35:59
166 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:37:35
If we get the centre-back Elvedi from Monchengladbach for under £5M and swop Keane and Cannon for Blackburn's Wharton, it's a good window.
Even better with Bakayoko in, paid for by the sale of Gray and (reluctantly but last year of contract) Iwobi.
COYB.
167 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:40:58
I like that last line of your post. “Everton are boxing clever at lastâ€. Yes, it's been quite a while but some sensible signings financially and hopefully successfully after a good few years of absolutely millions of pounds wasted.
Little acorns are starting to grow again!
168 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:41:01
They're not Evertonians!
169 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:44:05
Apparently Udinese last won a title (Serie B) in 1979 so even our current mediocrity is a step up for him. The new Moise Kean, I suspect.
170 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:48:06
This is actually turning out to be a better transfer window than I would ever have expected.
171 Posted 29/08/2023 at 22:48:52
He will provide a much needed focal point. Difficult to know where on the scale of Rondon to Lukaku he might fall but chances are he'll resemble both at different times.
Let's be patient and not expect the world straight away. If he manages 8 or so goals this season that's a decent start. Whatever happens, his presence should help us get up the pitch.
172 Posted 29/08/2023 at 23:00:14
We can only hope that, sooner than later, these guys do a good job that gets us out of the doldrums.
Just like when we brought in new managers we all said they need some time to assess the situation and get with the program but the initial success with all of them was short lived and now we are hoping Dyche can work with these new boys better than his predecessors.
He got us over the line last season with some good victories so let's see where we go from here. Up I hope.
173 Posted 29/08/2023 at 23:02:53
I'll try to do Beto next time.
174 Posted 29/08/2023 at 23:06:38
Deliverance, time will prove, but for the metal side of life, and the outlook on Everton, well it's a match made, hopefully.
I hope Thelwell has done it all, and the final exorcism of the evil spirits which have dragged the club to purgatory will be completed soon.
In context and that's what it is, it's a sense of breaking the ice, living, and Everton are still there, in the mix.
3 games down, but the rest of the season to claw back. This season starts tomorrow.
The October Inquest will or may not bring the club down further, beyond its knees, but for me this day has brought some smiles and belief back into the world of Evertonians.
Let's all embrace and enjoy this day and a double victory in South Yorkshire this week.
I've not known such Everton joy over a single singing since Latchford or Lineker but this is bigger and more important signing, hinged to the survival of EFC.

As Keith says, Cannon could be an excellent bargaining chip.

Do you think he'll take you to fame?
We said hey now don't you wait
Cos he's gonna break the scoring rate.

179 Posted 30/08/2023 at 00:28:04
If Beto is as good as his European and Everton scout reviews, then Everton will hold their own this season.
I think he is a sharp street-wise version of “Româ€?

We just wanted one afternoon of being happy mate :(
181 Posted 30/08/2023 at 00:39:59
So fingers crossed that the combined cash we can hopefully get from selling the expiring contracts of Iwobi (£â€Ž16 Million?) and Gray (£â€Ž10 Million+?) will be enough to get Sulemana.
182 Posted 30/08/2023 at 02:11:22
DuPont #180 – if we can get that right-footed right-winger, I think we will really be in business.
183 Posted 30/08/2023 at 03:56:52
If he can resemble Lukaku and Rondon at different times then I obviously hope he provides the best bits of both these players. And now it's time for some late business for Dyche to change how our midfield are going to play imo.
I'd get rid of Iwobi, Gray and Onana if there are any takers, and get in the wide players with pace that he desires, to bring in the craft.
Our midfield needs freshening up and also lacks a bit of craft and composure, but if we can get that extra craft out wide, then I'd swap our drifters for scrappers, and completely change the way we play.
It's all about opinions, and mine is that we would suddenly become a much more resilient team, but hurry up, Dyche, because this failure to prepare once again could/should cost you your job, in the eyes of a few other fans.
184 Posted 30/08/2023 at 04:02:40
Rondon had best bits????
Were they part of Chairman Bill's good times???
185 Posted 30/08/2023 at 05:55:03
He came to Everton unfit, when the most divisive manager in our entire history was given £1.7 million to spend, with a mantra to reduce the wage bill, before he would be given money to spend.
He never got no money and then lost both Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to injury, which left us without a fit centre-forward in the squad.
Failing to prepare has cost us a lot of points over the last three seasons, but I'm sure Kenwright is gonna get out of his sick bed for the last 48 hours of this window, and hopefully give us the players to produce those illusive good times.
186 Posted 30/08/2023 at 06:07:47
Be Beto!
187 Posted 30/08/2023 at 07:06:18
We could see the reverse of Rafa's season, where we were excellent up until the international break. Here's hoping!
188 Posted 30/08/2023 at 08:09:11
189 Posted 30/08/2023 at 08:17:34
Fingers crossed it works well for us! Looking forward to seeing him on the pitch.
As for tonight, we really need a win and, just as importantly, to score some bloody goals and to get off the mark this season.
190 Posted 30/08/2023 at 08:25:03
My excitement is slightly tempered by the thought that Rondon, Brett Angell and Bernie Wright were also big lads!
191 Posted 30/08/2023 at 08:34:37
I am fairly optimistic on this window, once the players we do have get fit, I think we will be a far stronger unit.
192 Posted 30/08/2023 at 08:46:19
193 Posted 30/08/2023 at 09:31:41
What a time to be an Everton fan!
194 Posted 30/08/2023 at 09:41:48
He ticks a lot of boxes.
I wonder if he quite understands what he now is? Even without the Number 9 shirt?
Could be the start of something beautiful. Or not. I've no idea. But there's hope... which is something that's been missing.
195 Posted 30/08/2023 at 09:42:08
Also which wide men does he select from McNeil, Harrison, Danjuma and (if he hasn't gone) Iwobi, with talk about bringing in another winger.
Who knows… we may at some point see Dele Alli although Dyche reckons he is miles away from being ready.
196 Posted 30/08/2023 at 09:58:02
Just checked where Napoli finished last season… 'Champions'. This is a good omen.
197 Posted 30/08/2023 at 10:00:22
I sincerely hope so!
198 Posted 30/08/2023 at 11:02:41
I was in Colwyn Bay on holiday on the morning the Charity Shield was to take place at Goodison Park. I walked round to the paper shop while my mum cooked the breakfast and my dad had a lie in.
I bought the Daily Mirror and went straight to back page and saw the headline:
EVERTON SIGN ALAN BALL £110,000
We played Liverpool that afternoon without Bally of course and got beat 1-0. Two Saturdays later, we hammered them at Goodison 3-1, Bally scoring twice.
About 12 months later on the morning of one of my GCEs, I read that Howard K had signed for £80,000, really getting up Shankly's nose.
Those were the days of John Moores and Harry Catterick when you never heard anything until The Catt had sealed the deal — which could never happen these days!
199 Posted 30/08/2023 at 12:17:21
By a strange coincidence, I wasn't far away. I was staying in a caravan in Rhyl with a few mates. Peculiar for me, on that particular day, I chose to read the front page of my Mirror first!
When I turned to the back page, I literally danced for joy all the way back to the caravan. BTW don't think it was the same day as the Charity Shield match. I was at that game where Ray Wilson & Roger Hunt carried the Jules Rimet trophy around the pitch.
Bally's first game was away to Fulham where he scored the only goal of the game. Cheers.
200 Posted 30/08/2023 at 12:48:51
I feel positive about Sean Dyche and so look forward to a relatively positive season after the next 2 or 3 games.
201 Posted 30/08/2023 at 12:50:08
- Dyche will play 451 / 433 / 4231 variant. 442 may make an appearance late in games if we're desperate for a goal, but it won't be our usual set up.
- Dele Alli will never play another game for Everton.
202 Posted 30/08/2023 at 12:56:09
That's interesting news, all the way from the Middle East, and I'm surely going to be right one day when I say Everton are going to be sold, because I've said it enough times over the years! 🤞ðŸ™ðŸ™

I thought the Chinese were unwelcome bedfellows in the UK, strongly influenced by the Americans? Having said that, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is in China and he said amongst other things:
"It is important that we maintain regular dialogue, regular lines of communication" then we can all laugh when they invest billions in a football club that is great at losing money. The last bit isn't true!
205 Posted 30/08/2023 at 13:10:39
Losing millions indeed, Barry, but hopefully that will change once the arl bastard finally leaves us for good.
206 Posted 30/08/2023 at 13:12:10
More likely the owners of a laundry, nudge nudge wink wink, you know what I mean?
207 Posted 30/08/2023 at 13:32:00
208 Posted 30/08/2023 at 13:42:04
I was still under a year old then but my arl man always talked about Ball, Harvey and George Best, as the best players of that era, along with the unlucky Tony Kay.
Good to have some hope for a change and starting a match with genuine hope and purpose.

Selling Iwobi and Gray would be good business given both are in the last years of their contracts. The club finally beginning to learn it's not a great idea allowing players to sit out their contracts and then leave for free.
Now if we could just get rid of Maupay and Keane that would be the icing...
