Tranmere Rovers 1 - 3 Everton U21s

Everton U21s make the short trip across the Mersey to Prenton Park for tonight's EFL Trophy clash against the League Two side, where they went behind early until the last 8 minutes, when they finally scored 3 goals.

It's the first of three games in Northern Group A, with Stockport County and Accrington Stanley providing the other competition for a place in the last 16.

First-teamers Jesper Lindstrøm, Beto and Joao Virginia have all been given starting places in the U21s team to add minutes to their pre-season preparations with Sean Dyche watching on from the stands.

Josh Davison put the hosts ahead after 18 minutes, converting a cut-back from near the byline.

Everton had numerous chances that were spurned until the 86th minute when Beto finally managed to convert one, equalizing to set up a penalty shootout.

Martin Sherif pounced on a loose ball, fired onto the post and rebounding across the face of the Tranmere goal.

But Lindstrom then played in Beto, where he seemed to have gone too wide but he turned and fired into the far side of the goal for the winner in the 2nd minute of stoppage time.

But Everton weren't done yet, with Beto driving through for Martin Sherif to convert on the line, giving the Young Blues a fie win in the end when it looked for a long period like they would never score.

Everton U21s:  Virginia, Dixon, Tamen, Welch, Campbell (Butler),
Lindstrøm, Armstrong (79' Butterfield), Metcalfe, Whitaker [Y:54'] (65' Sherif), Beto, Okoronkwo (78' Benjamin).

Subs not Used: G Pickford, Heath, Bates.

The EFL Trophy is broadcast live in the UK by Sky Sports who will show every matchon their new service, Sky Sports+… if you can figure out how to watch it.

Sky Sports+ is not available on Sky Go.

I've now downloaded the Sky Sports App on my iPhone but all I can find is a SkyBet type link page for this fixture. Not sure if that will let me watch it.

If you go to Scores | Football, it lists all the Bristol Street Motors Trophy games. Seems to want me to 'Get Sky Sports' but I'm already subscribed.

[Starting to sound like Dave Abrahams now…]

I find the link below pretty useful when trying to see which games are being televised in the UK

Live Football on TV

Brent @ 8
I think, depending on how you receive Sky, the game you want to watch may not be listed, however, it might still be available to watch when the broadcast begins. The first week of the Championship had all of the games and you could choose which to watch.

Danny, Sky Sports Plus is channel 22. I think you have to wait until the programme starts before you can select what to watch.

1-0 Tranmere.

Almost a carbon copy of Brighton’s first goal last Saturday.

FFS…..Beto goes down in stages looking for a penalty. Slight tug on his shirt, but come on!!

Following this on Sky Sports+ red button, Beto isn't impressing me even at this level.

Flashes of pace from Dixon but poor crossing. Pickford on the bench!

Rob Halligan
25 Posted 20/08/2024 at 19:41:57
Lindstrøm brings a good save from the Tranmere keeper from a free kick, about twenty five yards out.

Yeah Allen, but it's not Jordan.

Rob Halligan
26 Posted 20/08/2024 at 19:43:37
Beto one on one with the keeper, but his first touch let him down and he ended up leaning too far to the left whist trying to scoop the ball in with right. Ball ended up in the air with Beto trying a spectacular overhead kick which went nowhere.

1-0 at half time.

First half, lots of possession and first time seeing Beto in the flesh, he's not bad… he's flipping awful!!! Got as much chance of being a prem striker as I have. Sadly, Lindstrom also really poor except a half-decent free kick.

Dixon showed flashes of real quality and a great long throw but a bit sloppy in possession. Armstrong in the middle looks quality The new centre-back, William Tamen, is a liability so far.

Hoping for second-half improvement.

Brent Stephens

Tamen had a poor game on Friday and tonight not showing well.

Harrison Armstrong I suspect will get time in the first team before Dixon.

Free header for Sherif, about seven yards out, but heads straight at the keeper

Seems it was Sherif for the second also — not Beto.

So he wasn't on for the hat-trick?

Rob Halligan

Was definitely Beto who got the second, Michael.
Michael Kenrick

Yea, they just showed it again, Rob, definitely Beto.

So their caption was wrong. The Sky Sports App says Beto also.

Brian Wilkinson
53 Posted 20/08/2024 at 21:11:34
Beto first 2 Goals, Sherif third.

I have high hopes for Sherif, I wonder if Dyche will start Sherif and Beto in the Carabao Cup?

They look a good pairing in attack. Beto was awful until Sherif came on, then was like a man possessed playing alongside Sherif.

Mark Rankin
54 Posted 20/08/2024 at 21:13:03
Metcalfe grew into game and lovely assist for Beto. Sherif was a threat and dangerous when ball in front of him. Butterflied great cameo at end Butler looked decent. Welch solid all game and Armstrong looked head and shoulders above.

Lindstrøm and Beto left it late but did combine well for the second and Beto chipping in with another assist for Sherif at the end. Deserved win, some potential for the future but can’t see Lindstrøm or Beto (would love to be proved wrong) troubling the first team too much. Would be surprised if Dixon started for first team and I imagine he’ll be looking for a loan to lower league at some point.

55 Posted 20/08/2024 at 21:16:21
I didn't see the game but, reading some of the above comments, it would seem none of the players on the fringe of the first team made a compelling case to start on Saturday.
Brent Stephens
56 Posted 20/08/2024 at 21:24:30
John #55, yes, none of the usual U21s made any great claim to start on Saturday.

But Armstrong, at just 17 still, looks a real prospect and has been playing well for the U21s, as you know.

Brian Wilkinson
57 Posted 20/08/2024 at 21:49:15
I would like to see Sherif in the squad for the Carabao Cup game. He did well last season chipping in with 18 goals for the U18s, now stepped up to the U21s, a big Dutch lad, built like Beto.

If he can do it against League Two Tranmere, he's worth a shot against League Two Doncaster.

Bit early for the Premier League, but worth a shot in the cup.

Not be long before he is knocking on the door of the first team, another season or so. He's one I have been keeping an eye on, along with Armstrong and Dixon.

Gerry Clarke
58 Posted 20/08/2024 at 21:52:07
Sherif came on as a sub tonight, just after the hour against Tranmere. He was credited with the 3rd goal, but it was an effort from Beto which was going in anyway.

Beto and Lindstrom played the full game. Beto got the first 2 goals as well.

Brian Wilkinson
59 Posted 20/08/2024 at 22:09:38
Gerry, he was also unlucky when he hit the post Sherif, linked up well with Beto, who was awful most of the match, Sherif certainly helped Beto’s game.

Contracted til June 2026 so I fully expect Everton to extend his contract by the end of the season.

Another to keep an eye on for the U18s is Coby Ebere, left-winger.

Gerry Clarke
60 Posted 20/08/2024 at 22:37:46
Brian, that was a very good effort from Sherif that hit the post. I agree that Beto was poor for most of the game. He just looks awkward and never fully in control of the football. He is strong, reasonably quick and definitely unpredictable, but I don't think that's enough for the Premier league.
Ian Bennett
61 Posted 21/08/2024 at 07:48:42
Some well taken goals in the end, but mostly a hard watch. Game seemed to change when Sheriff came up top with Beto.

The comments on Dixon not being ready are probably fair. The lad needs a good loan spell in the lower league to learn his craft with a run of 20-25 games.

Beto looked poor last night until his goals. Just not enough to his game to suggest he'll do anything in the Premier League. Harsh when he could have scored a hat-trick, but the opposition was limited. It's a huge ask for him to keep us up if Calvert-Lewin moves on.

Expected Okoronkwo to be showing a lot more after his move from Sunderland. His passing was really poor on the right.

Overall, some neat football at times, but players that need to be playing men’s football that matters, with big crowds. Academy football is just too stale.

Stephen Davies
62 Posted 21/08/2024 at 10:47:43
A couple of things re last night's game v Tranmere:

Dixon is far from ready for the Premier League.
Lindstrøm isn't a Winger.
Who would you play at right-back?

Dave Lynch
63 Posted 21/08/2024 at 10:51:51
Stephen,

You forgot to mention even at that level, despite his goals, Beto at times looked out of his depth.

Stephen Davies
64 Posted 21/08/2024 at 12:29:32
Indeed Dave... the less said about that performance, the better.
