Mason Holgate looks to have played his last game for Everton after completing a loan move to West Bromwich Albion, the club where he spent a half a season five years ago.

The defender, again deemed surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, looked set to join Sheffield Wednesday earlier today but when that loan switch fell through, the Baggies came in with an offer to sign him for the remainder of both this season and his contract with the Toffees.

Holgate had two spells on loan last season, first at Southampton and then Sheffield United, as he winds down the five-year deal he signed with Everton in 2020 under Carlo Ancelotti.

The terms he agreed back then have proved prohibitive to prospective clubs seeking to sign him on a permanent basis, while his poor form in the Premier League has left him out in the cold at Goodison under successive managers.

That was reflected in the negotiations with West Brom who are said to be covering around a third of his wages until next May.

What a disaster of a player

At least it (should) mean we’ll NEVER see the porous Holgate-Keane centre back pairing ever again!!!!

I wonder if the contract he signed in 2020 that's mentioned in the article ruined him to some extent? Pure speculation on my part, but maybe he thought he'd "made it" then - a big contract under the biggest manager - and rested on his laurels a bit?

Unless my eyes deceived me, he definitely looked like a good player in his early days. Something went wrong somewhere along the way and it turned out badly with us, and indeed on his loans from what little I saw of him last season. I know he's been well compensated for little contribution in recent years, but it's sad, really.

Wish him the best in finding some form and success with WBA

That is so tacky Mike. I like it.
