Season › 2024-25 › News Pickford earns his 75th England cap Michael Kenrick 24/03/2025 39comments | Jump to last England 3 - 0 Latvia Jordan Pickford becomes equal second in the list of capped England goalkeepers, matching Joe Hart and David James with 75. He told ITV: “It is a privileged position being England number one. A proud moment for me but hopefully more to come. “We need to finish this week with another win. We have to expect the unexpected but we need to put on a performance.” But Pickford may well get flack for a mix-up with Gueuhi that almost let Latvia score. After a lot of probing and threatening attacks, England finally took the lead on 39 minutes through a brilliantly executed free-kick from Chelsea's Reece James. It took another half-hour of play before Harry Kane finally sealed the win, getting swiftly on the end of Declan Rice's sharp low cross. Eze came on and soon made it 3-0. England: Pickford, James, Konsa, Guehi, Lewis-Skelly, Rice, Rogers, Bellingham, Bowen, Rashford, Kane. Best modern era English goalkeeper by a mile.Would be great to see him win a trophy with England. Paul Ferry 2 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:06:02 Even better with Everton, Robert! Bill Gall 3 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:09:27 Shame that England restrict viewing the game with their high prices to other countries, still yet to see a game televised in Canada. Paul Ferry 4 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:17:14 Lucky you Bill.bbc radio commentary;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiZ75DmKuPE Paul Ferry 5 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:25:02 That was perfect from that distance from James. Paul Hewitt 6 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:25:10 Broja looking sharp tonight. Plenty of running and set a goal up. Paul Ferry 7 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:37:00 Who are they playing, PH? Paul Hewitt 8 Posted 24/03/2025 at 20:54:27 Andorra Paul Ferry 9 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:00:15 Cheers! Latvia are ranked 140th in the world! This is awful. Nothing is happening. Brian Williams 10 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:10:20 England's football tonight is as bad as it was under Dyche, sorry Southgate, same same I suppose. 😁 Paul Ferry 11 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:13:26 And on comes Foden who hasn't scored in 17 for England. And Kane makes it 2 (71). ITS COMING HOME Brian Williams 12 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:15:28 If it's coming home I'm moving house. 🙊 Paul Ferry 13 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:19:30 There's some beautiful classy gentrified stuff around Birkenhead Market. Liam Mogan 14 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:23:56 I've always thought Phil Foden was the most over hyped player of his generation.Good player but no where near the pedestal his plaudits and Pep put him on. Paul Ferry 15 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:27:53 I thought that Foden was superb last season Liam. But not this one. He's not in Saka or Palmer's league. Don't like his hair. Liam Mogan 16 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:31:48 He's a very good player Paul, but not as good as the hype Paul Ferry 17 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:37:20 You were in Liverpool yesterday Liam but not at the Dock? (Taking your lad to Liverpool 1?) Tom Bowers 18 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:39:02 These games against opposition like this are just a waste of time although one player who would be at home with them is Rashford. The amount of passes he got and squandered was unbelievable. No left foot and most of his right foot crosses were so poor I lost count. It took a great dead ball kick by James to finally break a chaotic Latvian rearguard in the absence of any offence whatsoever by Latvia.Tuchel at the moment seems to be throwing cards in the air to see what lands but so far nothing to get excited about.Let's get back to the Prem. Paul Ferry 19 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:43:26 Lets Tom, but still 9 days mate. Strictly speaking, I suppose, that was not a waste of time as it was a WC qualifier. But what on earth did unheimlich aussehend Tommy learn from those 2 games against 65th and 140th in the world other than who is crap and who is crappier? Neil Lawson 20 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:49:27 Been watching Midsommer Murders. Much more exciting, but we'll done Jordan. No doubt his first half cock up will give his critics something to moan about. Need to stop. Barnaby about to reveal murderer. Liam Mogan 21 Posted 24/03/2025 at 21:55:59 At my brothers 50th on Saturday night Paul. My lad went to Liverpool 1 with his girl Sunday, I met them after in Baltic Market.Went the first test event, wont go now until the season starts. Saw a couple of blues after, who said leaving and walking towards town was a bit of a mare with the iron bridge etc. Neil Tyrrell 22 Posted 24/03/2025 at 22:13:15 Congratulations to Jordan, many more caps in his future I'd think.Watched a bit of Friday's match but skipped today, visiting my sister in Providenciales and the turtles were way more interesting than what I saw Friday. A win's a win though!Got some great turtle pics today, wish I could post a couple here. Amazing creatures. Paul Ferry 23 Posted 24/03/2025 at 22:27:59 Liam, I think that walk from town to the dock is being treated a little lightly by some for whom it is not too much of a stretch. It would be a struggle for many at the best of times and that is not a windy rainy day in November. Let's hope that bars, cafes, and food trucks continue to grow once we hit the dock road. That exposed stretch before the wall will not be pleasant, even for Danny O and Mark M!Actually, more than anything, I'm looking forward to your August posts Liam, when it is no longer a one-fifth or one-half full ground with loads leaving early and it is not Sunday but a Saturday when town is buzzing. https://liverpoolbidcompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Weekly-Footfall-Report-Wk20Yr2023.pdf James Flynn 24 Posted 24/03/2025 at 22:30:17 Checking to see if Gana played today. They play tomorrow.Looking at the Ivory Coast vs Gambia boxscore, IC's starting Right-CB is Jean-Philippe Gbamin. Don Alexander 25 Posted 24/03/2025 at 22:54:15 Playing for defensively poor clubs from the start of his career OUR Jordan has WON 75 caps. That to me means he's an outstanding goalie.Yes, we all revere our several other great goalies but almost all of them, if not ALL, played in teams of skill and threat to any opposition at all - completely unlike OUR Jordan. We should cherish him. Danny O'Neill 26 Posted 24/03/2025 at 23:18:05 Firstly, congratulations to Jordan. That is a great individual achievement. And barring the odd brain fart moment (tell me a keeper that doesn't have them), he's saved us on more than one occasion these last few seasons.I'll agree with Don. You often gauge and good keeper, and defenders for that matter, better when in poorly performing teams,I always cite David Seaman. Personally, and it's an opinion, I didn't think he was that great. He just played behind one of the tightest defences in recent generations at Arsenal. He was well protected.A pretty dire match again. England must have the easiest stroll in the park towards qualification, which is a given.I can see it now. Win an easy group easily and there will be frenzy that they are going to win the World Cup. The Golden Generation of the 2000s has been replaced with a documentary about "England Lions: The Next Generation". It's on Amazon Prime, so get used to that phrase.Well, let's wait and see when they come up against better opposition.I should apologise as I have little interest in England and don't follow any particular nation on the international stage. I just watch the matches. Paul Ferry 27 Posted 24/03/2025 at 23:19:04 Spot on Don (25). The best English keeper of the last twenty years, There is no one right now who is anywhere near his class: Ramsdale? Pope? Henderson FFS? I pray that he has another 4-5 years in him for us. I don't know him. I've never met him. But that video of JP with that young Evertonian kid who had suffered so much is lovely and teary and fills me with pride:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66QFNSaDyCc Danny O'Neill 28 Posted 24/03/2025 at 23:34:45 Paul, did you have to?I was about to nod off, but thought I'd give that a watch. Now my hay fever has kicked off complete with watery eyes.Great stuff from young Harry and credit to Jordan and the players. It makes you realise they are human. Paul Ferry 29 Posted 24/03/2025 at 23:52:42 I know Danny. It's lovely. Sweet zzzzzzz Don Alexander 30 Posted 25/03/2025 at 01:12:00 Top tribute to a lovely young boy. Fabulous! Duncan McDine 31 Posted 25/03/2025 at 08:12:14 Bloody hay fever got me as well, Danny, whilst watching Paul's link. Congratulations to Jordan, he is a top keeper these days. Mark Murphy 32 Posted 25/03/2025 at 08:24:31 We have no dress sense,Talk with strange accents,We are (dis)respected, whenever we are heard.…oh! Walking down the Regents Road, all the windows missing panes,When I hear the locals shoutYour not scouse, keep Woolley's out,We are the Bramley-Moore gang..Don's tin hat… Danny O'Neill 33 Posted 25/03/2025 at 08:46:33 I want you singing that on the concourse at half time against Arsenal, Mark, and put the evidence on YouTube!! Mark Murphy 34 Posted 25/03/2025 at 08:53:52 It's an improvement on the current version though, Danny, eh? Allen Rodgers 35 Posted 25/03/2025 at 09:21:21 Some of the papers only gave Pickford 5 or 6/10 because he had nothing to do; obviously, that was his fault. Guehi also got low marks and that was Pickford's fault too. They hate him. Tony Waring 36 Posted 25/03/2025 at 09:33:58 Paul (19),Did you take Deutsch at St Mary's and, if so, who was your teacher? Andy Bulmer 37 Posted 25/03/2025 at 16:26:59 You cite Foden as overhyped? I give you Jack Grealish. Everything sideways or backwards over 10 yards. Utterly fucking useless and he's got shite hair as well... Mike Hayes 38 Posted 25/03/2025 at 18:06:02 Pickford might have to move to a “bigger” club to get an England call up - no wait hang on a minute….🙄💙 Brian Wilkinson 39 Posted 25/03/2025 at 18:57:36 May be in a minority of one but for blowing up someones backside and hyping a player up, I think Jude Bellingham beats both Foden and Grealish Add Your Comments In order to post a comment, you need to be logged in as a registered user of the site. » Log in now Or Sign up as a ToffeeWeb Member — it's free, takes just a few minutes and will allow you to post your comments on articles and Talking Points submissions across the site.
