Everton Badboys, 1998-99

With a £50,000 suspended fine hanging over them, the woeful disciplinary record for Everton's First Team players is now complete; see ToffeeWeb's Bad Boys Table.

 HEADLINES

RED CARDS

Over the season, Everton incurred only one full red card but pickled up another six for second bookable offenses.

YELLOWS

Hutchison's 12th yellow card brought Everton's total to an incredible 108 in all senior competitions this season. The FA will doubtless impose the £50,000 fine, suspended from last season, and throw in some more punishment for good measure.

 THE TOFFEEWEB DISCIPLINARY POINTS CALCULATION

The method used here to calculate points in the table above works like this:
  • A Single Yellow Card is worth 2 points
  • A Double Yellow Card (automatic Red) is worth 5 points (the first yellow is ignored)
  • A Red Card is worth 5 points
  • A match missed through suspension is worth 6 points
The system is designed to reflect the relative impact to the club of each player's indiscretions. For example, although the various red-card offences carry different suspensions, the initial impact of all red cards is the same: the player misses the rest of the match. Then the suspension follows, and the player misses one or more complete matches.

THE NEW FA CARD SYSTEM - AN EXPLANATION

The Football Association's new disciplinary system introduced for the 1998-99 season (starting June 16, and therefore including pre-season friendlies) works like this:

  • A Yellow Card caution is not assigned any points for severity: a caution is a caution.
  • Players will serve only a one-match suspension if they receive five Yellows before April 12,
  • Players will serve an additional one-match suspension if they receive eight Yellows in the same period. Players who receive their 5th Yellow after the April 12 threshold will only receive a censure or warning (This is to prevent a player from missing the FA Cup final as a result of Yellow-card suspension)
  • Players accumulating 11 bookings will be required to attend an FA disciplinary commission and could face further punishment, typically an additional ban and/or a fine.
  • Cards received in the Premiership, FA Cup, Worthington Cup, Friendlies, and Reserve matches will all be included in the accumulated totals.
  • The length of the suspension after a Red Card follows this system:
    • Violent conduct; spitting at an opponent:– 3 matches
    • Foul or aggressive language:– 2 matches
    • Professional foul; deliberate hand ball on the goal line:– 1 match
    • Double Yellow Card = Red Card:– 1 match
  • Players who are sent off for the 2nd time in a season will be suspended for 1 match in addition to the system above.
  • Players who are sent off for the 3rd time in a season will be suspended for 2 matches in addition to the system above, etc.
  • Suspensions start 14 days after the player receives the relevant card, and will be served for all matches, but the duration of suspension will be counted only for full matches (Premier League; Worthington League Cup, FA Cup).
  • Unfulfilled suspensions will be carried to the next season, if necessary.
