EVERTON SEASON DIARY
December 1998
|
-
31st: Peter Johnson has been given some extra time by the league
authorities to sort out his club ownership position. A sale of his interest
in Tranmere Rovers is though to be imminent.
-
30th: John
Collins has been suffering with a tiny broken bone in his foot for the
last six months. Collins may be sidelined for up to two months to gain a
full recovery.
-
29th: Evertonians bid farewell to
Mickael Madar. The enigmatic
Frenchman joins Paris St Germain on a free transfer. John O'Kane should be
back from Burnley after completing his two-month loan spell. Craig Short
will be out for 3 or 4 weeks with a recurrence of a calf injury early in
yesterday's match.
-
28th: Utter disaster as Everton fail to take advantage of their dominance,
then crash and burn 1-4 to Tottenham Hotspur
as defensive incompetence gifted Chris Armstrong with an undeserved
hat-trick.
-
27th: Marco
Materazzi's eighth Yellow Card yesterday means an automatic one-match
suspension. He will miss the vital New Year clash with Leicester City.
-
26th: Half-way through the season and a dismal Boxing Day match against
a poor Derby County sees Everton unable to score
at home yet again the 6th 0-0 homer of the season. Yellow cards for
Materazzi, Unsworth and Myhre.
-
24th: Conflicting rumours suggest that Bill Kenwright is close to
making a substantial bid for a major chunk of Peter Johnson's shares in Everton.
-
23rd: Danny
Williamson is back in training after a long battle with injuries.
-
22nd: Peter Johnson is believed to be close to a deal on selling
his interest in Tranmere Rovers. This must be completed by the end of December
to avoid problems from the Leagues' governing bodies.
-
21st: Elton John has the audacity to use
Nick Barmby as an example
of the the inflated transfer fees impacting the modern game.
-
20th: John
Collins was suffering from after-effects of the flu when he missed most
of yesterday's match, and now has a pending foot operation on hold over the
Christmas period.
-
19th: Everton lose 1-2 away at West
Ham United, without suspended players Ball and Dunne. Meanwhile, Everton's
Youth Team current holders of the FA Youth
Cup started their defence of the trophy by gaining a creditable
2-2 draw away to Manchester United in the 2nd Round.
-
18th: Flu and injuries mean Everton are without Bakayoko, Watson,
Short, and others for the West Ham match.
Paul Gerrard has gone on
a month's loan to Oxford United, with a 24-hr recall option.
-
17th: Tony Thomas
is confirmed as a Motherwell player, Everton having agreed to release him
for a transfer fee of just £125,000. In a parting jester, Thomas
reportedly takes a mean-spirited swipe at the club he followed as a lad.
-
16th: The Reserves extend their unbeaten
run to 8 games with a 3-0 win at Derby County, and move above Sunderland
to take 2nd place in the Pontins Premier League, behind a rampant Manchester
United. However, youth star Michael O'Brien injured his knee ligaments and
will be out for up to 3 months.
-
15th: Lots of talk about the South African connection, with Evertonian
Ian Kilbride interested in investing his Spirit/Appleton money in Peter Johnson's
shares. Fears also that he could just be a Johnson muppet.
-
14th: The latest casualty of Everton's financial mis-management is
the Youth Academy at Netherton, where signing of the main construction contract
is being put on hold.
-
13th: Marco
Materazzi was missing from yesterday's line-up as a disciplinary move
following a training ground incident on Friday. It seems that Marco
Materazzi was feeling tense as he worried about his unhappy wife, and came
in a bit heavy on a few of the youngsters in training. Smith punished him
after he would not back down.
-
12th: Everton beat bottom club,
Southampton, 1-0 with a great goal from Bakayoko,
after he missed a number of chances. Bilic, Madar, Unsworth and Dacourt
all get to play but Materazzi is surprisingly absent.
-
11th: Neville Southall has moved form his job as Huddersfield Town's
goalkeeping coach to join Torquay United as their stand-in keeper.
-
8th: More pointless action for Bilic, Madar, Barmby, Farrelly, and
the rest of the Everton Reserves all-stars as
Aston Villa get a 0-0 draw at the AutoQuest Stadium in Widnes.
-
7th: The ridiculous speculation that Everton would sign anyone, let
alone Dean Saunders, has abated now that the Sheffield United player has
gone to join Benfica for £500k.
-
6th: Cards for badboys Ball and Dunne yesterday
mean they will both be suspended when Everton visit West Ham on 19 December.
In the draw for the FA Cup 3rd Round, Everton travel to Bristol City early
in the New Year...
-
December 5th: Everton dominate
Chelsea at Goodison Park, creating many chances,
but it ends up 0-0. Unsworth is suspended for this one, but Bilic still
does not play. Ball picks up a 5th yellow band Richard Dunne gets sent off
with a double yellow. Wise was sent off for Chelsea earlier in the first
half.
-
4th: Tony Thomas turns down a move to Motherwell after failing to
agree personal terms.
-
3rd: Everton have agreed a fee of £150,000 with Motherwell in
exchange for Tony Thomas, who
has had just one sub appearance this season.
-
2nd: Everton reserves have
beaten Birmingham City 2-1. Appearances by Slaven Bilic and Nicky Barmby,
returning from injury, as well as Mickey Madar, helped Phil Jevons to grab
both goals.
-
December 1st: It will likely take
some time for Peter Johnson to divest his massive 68% shareholding in Everton,
but rumours abound of new consortia or other financial backing for life-long
Evertonian Bill Kenwright to take full control of the club in the near future.
